2024 NBA Summer League - San Antonio Spurs v Portland Trail Blazers

The young athlete has been working his way back into shape for the 2024-2025 season

Last season, Spurs 2023 second-round pick Sidy Cissoko suffered a left ankle injury that kept him from playing for several weeks.

During his rookie season, Cissoko spent most of it away from San Antonio honing his skills with the G-League affiliate Austin Spurs.

The year before that, the French swingman played with the G-League Ignite. Admittedly, he struggled with the transition from the sound and fury of Las Vegas to the quiet of the San Antonio and Austin areas.

It was revealed in an article last May that he struggled to find comfort in the Texas capital.

“Most of the time, I’m in the G League and, therefore, in Austin, and my apartment doesn’t get much daylight. It’s really depressing. I realized that even when I played the Playstation, I played too much. On Fortnite, I spent the equivalent of 160 days! This is wasted time that I could have spent in the gym, time that I could have made donations and helped people in need, called my family. I wasted time on it, so now I’m doing it differently.”

Late in the season, Sidy began to play with pain. Eventually, Cissoko required minor surgery. In between, the young player experienced depression, but found a healing path through music.

“I’m not going to lie. The last few months, when I was injured, I fell a bit into depression. It was difficult because I was looking for something to do. I finally learned to keep busy. Now I put my phone aside, I bought a piano to learn to play, and I clear my head. Now I have fun with the piano; I play quite a bit.”

Cissoko is another in a list of players who have dealt with depression but are sharing their experience in hopes of normalizing the emotions that often come with the pressure and stresses of the game.

In recent years, Spurs swingman DeMar DeRozan verbalized his challenges with depression.

Obviously depression is not limited to athletes, but there is often a stigma with men sharing their emotions. This can be elevated when boys are grouped competitively over years.
