Lonnie Walker has been playing with an injured back since March 18 and has missed five of the last 11 regular-season games.
Former Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV is joining the reigning champs.
ESPN on Wednesday reported that Walker had agreed to a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics. The contract is a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 deal, meaning the former McDonald’s All-American will be competing for Boston’s 15th and final regular-season roster spot during training camp.
Drafted 18th overall by the Spurs in 2018, Walker spent his first four seasons in San Antonio before playing on one-year deals for the Lakers in 2022-23 and Nets in 2023-24.
The 6-foot-4 guard appeared in 58 games for Brooklyn last year, averaging 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 17.4 minutes. He connected on 1.8 3-pointers per game at a 38.4% clip.
“I ain’t even reach my prime yet,” Walker posted on Twitter in June as an unsigned free agent. “Y’all gonna see soon. The apology better be just as loud as the disrespect.”
Walker, now 25, averaged a career-best 12.1 points and 2.2 assists as a reserve in his final season with the Spurs in 2021-22. But, shortly after drafting similar guards in Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley in the 2022 NBA draft, San Antonio pulled its qualifying offer for Walker that offseason.
Walker went on to sign a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the Lakers in July 2022.
“We have seen his growth and we are excited for what is to come for him,” Spurs general manager Brian Wright said of Walker in June 2022. "I think the way the draft played out kind of changed the trajectory of our roster and made the opportunities a little bit different than maybe they would have been had the draft gone a different way.
“We did decide to pull the qualifying offer, but again, he is going to be a player that continues to grow and we are excited to follow his development wherever that lands.”
