Spurs agree to terms with guard Malachi Flynn

Detroit Pistons guard Malachi Flynn (14) controls the ball against Brooklyn Nets guard Lonnie Walker IV, left, and forward Jalen Wilson (22) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Saturday, April 6, 2024, in New York.

A player drafted late in the first round in 2020 who improbably recorded one of last season’s highest-scoring games will receive a look from the Spurs at training camp.

In a move that should increase the competitive atmosphere at the Victory Capital Performance Center, the Spurs agreed to terms Wednesday with guard Malachi Flynn on a one-year, non-guaranteed deal, a league source confirmed.

Flynn, 26, became an unrestricted free agent in June after Detroit declined to extend him a qualifying offer.

Toronto dealt Flynn to New York last December as part of the OG Anunoby deal that saw the Raptors acquire Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett. Flynn appeared in 14 games for the Knicks before being dealt at the trade deadline to the Pistons in February.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound native of Tacoma, Wash., struggled to gain a consistent spot in Detroit’s rotation, but he raised eyebrows when he came off the bench to score 50 points on April 3 against Atlanta. He bagged that shocking career-high total by connecting on 18 of 25 from the field, including 5 of 9 from the 3-point line, in 34 minutes.

Flynn’s 50-point game was tied for 16th on the chart of the season’s best single-game scoring performances. He also tied former NBA guard Nick Anderson for the most points scored off the bench in NBA history.

Flynn’s previous career high of 27 points was recorded in his rookie season.

In 24 games for Detroit, he averaged 8.0 points while shooting 31.6% from 3-point range on 3.2 attempts. In four seasons, he’s averaged 5.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists while shooting 33.4% from beyond the arc on 2.6 attempts.

Toronto selected Flynn 29th overall in 2020. In 47 games as a rookie, he averaged 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists while shooting 32.1% from deep on 3.6 attempts. He was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for April.

Flynn gives the Spurs the maximum 21 players for their offseason and preseason rosters. Teams are limited in the regular season to carrying 15 players on standard contracts and three on two-way deals.

Flynn joins a roster that includes guards Devin Vassell, Chris Paul, first-round rookie Stephon Castle, Tre Jones, Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley, two-way contract guard David Duke Jr. and undrafted rookie Riley Minnix.

Spurs, assistant coach part ways

Spurs assistant coach Darius Songaila told a Lithuanian website he is leaving the club after a conversation with coach Gregg Popovich about his future.

“We met at the end of the month, and it was time to change the situation because I had no more opportunities to move up,” Songaila told 15Min. “I didn’t want to continue to be stagnant on the second assistant’s bench. The assistants who occupied the first bench of the Spurs signed four-year contracts, so I had no chance to rise in the position.”

Songaila said Popovich encouraged him to move on.

“We talked about it with Pop and he said I better make a change because there’s no room to go up on this team,” Songaila said.

Songaila, 46, was promoted to assistant coach in 2020 after a two-year stint as a video staffer. He said it’s not easy leaving the Spurs.

“San Antonio had become my second home," said the former Lithuania national team member, who played eight seasons in the NBA from 2003-2011.

“This is the first stop of my career as a coach abroad. I learned a lot in the Spurs organization, I went through all the phases,” he said. “Of course, it is painful to leave this club, but I have come to the end of the line because I have been working in the same position for three years, and I did not want to be stagnant there anymore without a chance to move up.”
