When the Spurs drafted a slender Parisian teenager named Tony Parker back in 2001, the NBA had little French presence to speak of. Less than two decades later, flipping on a game that doesn’t feature at least one Frenchman roaming the court is verging on impossible.
Much of the credit for this steady surge in French talent is owed to Parker, the 2023 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee who won four NBA titles alongside Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. Over the last six years, 17 French-born players have been selected in the NBA draft. The Spurs nabbed two of them in 2023 – No. 1 overall pick and potential heir to LeBron James’ throne Victor Wembanyama, and 44th overall pick Sidy Cissoko. In this year’s draft, Frenchmen went 1-2 for the first time ever with Atlanta selecting Zaccharie Risacher first overall and Washington picking Alex Sarr second.
In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports at the Paris Olympics, Parker spoke proudly of his enormous impact on French basketball culture.
“I feel very proud to inspire a whole generation,” Parker said during an interview with Kerri Walsh Jennings. “When I arrived there were only two French guys, and I was the first French guy to be an NBA champion, to be an All-Star. And so to have back-to-back number one picks with Victor and now Zaccharie, who both came up in my academy, both played on my French (club) team, both won championships with my French team. And to see now they’re playing at the highest level on the Olympic stage, it’s amazing. I never though in my wildest dreams. And I always dream big, but that’s pretty special.”
While Parker played a significant role in destroying the anti-Euro stigmas that pervaded the NBA around the turn of the century, he also helped transform the French national team into a formidable international player. Since 2000, France has claimed two Summer Olympics silver medals (2000, 2020) one Eurobasket title plus four other top-three finishes, and a pair of FIBA World Cup bronze medals.
And much to Parker’s delight, another coveted medal has come within reach for “Les Bleus” this week at the Paris Games.
France, led by 20-year-old Wembanyama, dispatched Canada in Tuesday’s quarterfinals to set up a semifinal match against Germany on Thursday. A win would likely setup a rematch of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold-medal game between France and the United States, which will face Nikola Jokicc-led Serbia in Thursday’s other semifinal.
“Victor is amazing,” Parker said. "His head and his mental side, there’s nothing I can tell him. He’s ready. He’s not bothered by pressure or the expectations. He’s a little bit like LeBron. The only one I can compare who had so much expectation before he arrived is LeBron James. I think he’s the only one you can really compare. And Victor, the way be played his rookie season with the Spurs, he was unbelievable.
“And so I hope it translates with a lot of championships for the Spurs. And I hope it will translate with a lot of medals for French basketball. He has a chance to be one of the best players in the history of our game.”
