Wembanyama shows up in overtime as France defeats Japan

Basketball - Olympic Games Paris 2024: Day 1

Japan takes France down to the wire in second Olympic contest.

The French national team was almost stunned in front of its home crowd. Tuesday’s contest against Japan was one of, if not the most exciting game of the 2024 Paris Olympics so far. On the back of a miracle shot from Matthew Strazel and a dominant overtime period from San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, France defeated Japan 94-90.

Both teams got off to hot starts offensively in a blazing 32-25 first period. Wembanyama did his work from the three-point line early, hitting two catch-and-shoot threes for France. He was on point in the first half, with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists while shooting 100% from the field. Wemby didn’t block any shots, but he removed shots from going in by swiping them off the rim, something that is allowed in FIBA play.

Japan caught fire from deep early and never looked back. They shot 43.2% from three on 37 attempts. They were led by starting point guard, Yuki Kawamura, who put Japan on his back in the second half. Kawamura did his best Stephen Curry impression, knocking down three after three, punishing France’s drop defense. Kawamura finished the game with 29 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while shooting 6-15 from three.

Wembanyama went quiet in the second half. He became more of a facilitator as the Japanese defense keyed in on him. They sent doubles and closed out hard when he caught the ball on the perimeter. He did not score a single point in the second half.

Guerschon Yabusele, Evan Fournier and Strazel took on the scoring load in his absence. Yabusele is a bowling ball in transition who also nails threes. He had 13 points and hit 3-6 deep balls. Fournier hit some big shots when France needed him, despite an inefficient shooting night when he had 14 points on 5-18 shooting. Rudy Gobert played a key defensive role, as he had 7 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Japan took France down to the wire despite missing one of its key players. Los Angeles Laker, Rui Hachimura was ejected from the game after his second unsportsmanlike foul in the second half. He had 24 points before his ejection. Josh Hawkinson and Kawamura came up big in his absence and gave Japan a late 4-point lead with some clutch shots down the stretch.

France got the ball, down 4, with about 20 seconds to go. Strazel caught the ball on the left wing, pump-faked a defender, side-step dribbled and flung up a miracle shot. Not only did the ball go in, but he was fouled for the and-1 play to tie it. After making the free throw, France and Japan headed to overtime.

Wembanyama came out with a force in overtime, getting an and-1 bucket to go and then hit a three-pointer to give France a six-point lead. Wemby had 8 points in the overtime period, scoring all but one of France’s buckets, and outscored the entire Japanese squad. He finished the game with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

France will face Germany, the other undefeated team in its group, on Friday, August 2nd at 2 p.m. CT. Germany’s victory over Brazil on Tuesday ensured that both France and Germany will move on to the knockout rounds of the Olympics. Winning the game on Friday will be important for France to earn a better matchup in the knockout rounds. Germany defeated France in their last friendly matchup, 70-65, earlier this month.
