Former Spurs star-turned-broadcaster Sean Elliott is recovering after undergoing what he called a “super easy” procedure that “shocked his heart back into rhythm.”

Elliott and his wife, Claudia Zapata-Elliott, posted a story on their Instagram accounts announcing his successful Cardioversion, which the Mayo Clinic describes on its website as a “treatment that uses quick, low-energy shocks to restore a regular heart rhythm” after atrial fibrillation has been detected.

Elliott’s post indicated his Apple Watch warned him he was experiencing “AFib,” an “irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm,” according to the Mayo Clinic website.

Left untreated, the condition can lead to blood clots or a fatal stroke.

“Grateful for the gift of health, an Apple Watch, and the very best healthcare system!” Elliott-Zapata wrote. “Sean wasn’t experiencing any symptoms, but for the last couple of weeks, his Apple watch had been warning him he was in Atrial Fibrillation. Enter the amazing cardiology team Methodist Health Care SA who performed several diagnostic tests and imaging and then shocked his heart back into rhythm in a procedure known as cardioversion. One of us was very nervous but knew we were in the best of hands.”

“Thank you to our Methodist family, and especially the Trianas, the best father-daughter cardiologists in the business.”

A two-time All-Star forward and a key member of the squad that won the 1999 NBA title, the first of five championships claimed by the Spurs, Elliott is no stranger to dealing with serious health issues.

After going through testing in 1993, doctors diagnosed him with focal segmental glomerular sclerosis, a type of kidney disease that causes scarring on the kidneys and inhibits their ability to filter excess fluids, waste and toxins from the blood.

Despite the diagnosis, Elliott played for several more seasons and gained fame for his “Memorial Day Miracle” 3-pointer that won Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against Portland during the 1999 playoffs.

Less than a month after the Spurs won the title, Elliott and his doctors announced his condition had worsened and that he would need a kidney transplant as soon as a matching donor could be found. In August 1999, he underwent successful surgery to receive a kidney from his older brother Noel.

“I tell everybody my brother is the poster child for organ donation,” Elliott told the San Antonio Express-News in 2023. “I have heard so many stories about family and friends who matched as a donor but were afraid or reluctant to donate a kidney, saying, ‘What is going to happen to me? And that is a valid concern.

“But after donating, my brother has had three kids, is healthy, obviously alive and doing well. You would never know he has one kidney.”

Elliott, who is about to enter 24th season as the Spurs’ lead TV analyst, has become a tireless advocate for kidney health and testing. After his “AFib” scare it would be no surprise to see him beat the drum for heart health as well.
