Tim Duncan ranked among top 20 in ESPN’s top 100 athletes of the centu
San Antonio Spurs’ Tim Duncan stands during the national anthem before Game 1 in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday May 19, 2014 at the AT&T Center.
Tim Duncan delivered San Antonio its first NBA title in 1999, as the end of the 20th century approached. Then, over the first decade and a half of the new millennium, the Spurs’ spotlight-averse superstar went on claim enough championship rings to fill every finger on his enormous right hand.
After all that winning, there was no doubt Duncan would appear somewhere in ESPN’s recently unveiled list of the 100 best professional athletes of the 21st century. It was where Duncan landed that will likely have some Spurs fans up in arms. The five-time champion and 2020 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee landed at No. 16, sandwiched between Olympic swimming demigod Katie Ledecky and longtime Western Conference rival Shaquille O’Neal.
Duncan was the fourth-highest ranked NBA player behind Stephen Curry (No. 14). Kobe Bryant (No. 10) and LeBron James (No. 4). American swimming legend Michael Phelps, American tennis marvel Serena Williams and Argentine soccer sensation Lionel Messi took the top three spots ahead of James.
Now, it should be noted that Duncan’s first two and a half seasons were not considered when ESPN’s panel voted on the top 100. That meant they were not allowed to factor in his 1998 Rookie of the Year award, 1999 NBA championship or four combined All-NBA and All-Defensive selections.
“The first 2½ seasons of Duncan’s stellar career came before the turn of the century, but that didn’t stop him from cementing his spot near the top of this list,” ESPN’s Andrew Lopez wrote. “Even without a Rookie of the Year and his first NBA title, Duncan’s run in the early 2000s banked him both of his MVP awards. The Big Fundamental was also one of the best defenders the league has seen, earning his final All-Defensive team nod in 2015 at 38 years old.”
Debate will rage over whether Duncan should have ranked higher among his basketball peers, which is precisely the sort of thing ESPN intended with a subjective list pitting superstars from across the sports world against each other. But for the sake of comparison, here’s a quick look at how the list’s top four NBA players of the century stack up.
Duncan: Four-time champion, two-time Finals MVP, two-time regular-season MVP, 13-time All-NBA, 13-time All-Defense, 14-time All-Star. Averaged 18.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.1 blocks in the regular season.
James: Four-time champion, four-time Finals MVP, four-time regular-season MVP, 20-time All-Star, 19-time All-NBA selection, six-time All-Defense, three-time All-Star Game MVP, NBA’s all-time scoring leader. Averaged 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.5 steals in the regular season.
Bryant: Five-time champion, two-time Finals MVP, 2007-08 MVP, 18-time All-Star, 15-time All-NBA selection, 12-time All-Defense, four-time All-Star Game MVP.
Curry: Four-time champion, 2022 Finals MVP, two-time regular-season MVP, 10-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA, 2022 All-Star Game MVP, two-time scoring leader, career leader in 3-pointers made. Averaged 24.8 points, 6.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 3.9 3-pointers and 1.5 steals in the regular season.
In addition to Duncan, former Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard also made the cut at No. 85. Chris Paul, who signed a one-year deal with San Antonio this offseason, was No. 83.
