LAS VEGAS — Former Spurs assistant coach Hank Egan received the 2024 Tex Winter Assistant Coach Lifetime Impact Award on Saturday from the National Basketball Coaches Association.
“I’m thrilled Hank Egan is receiving this well-deserved honor,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement.“During his 40-plus seasons as a coach, he taught, inspired and supported so many of us. His passion for basketball, combined with his knowledge of the game, made him one of the best coaches I’ve ever encountered. I’m forever grateful for Hank’s mentorship and friendship.”
Egan spent eight seasons with the Spurs from 1994-2022, a stint that included the franchise winning the first of its five NBA titles in 1999 and six other playoff appearances. Popovich played for Egan at Air Force from 1966-70 and served as an assistant coach under him there from 1973-79.
“Winning our first championship together in 1999 (over New York) at ‘The Garden’ will always be remembered as one of the greatest achievements and experiences in my professional and personal life,” Egan said in a statement.
Egan also had stints as an assistant coach with Golden State (2002-03) and Cleveland (2005-2010). In 15 NBA seasons, Egan went to the playoffs 12 times, reached four conference finals and two NBA Finals.
“Hank Egan is one of the great teachers of the game,” Indiana coach and NBCA president Rick Carlisle said in a statement. “He not only helped develop players, but his coaching tree has produced some of the league’s best, including Kings coach Mike Brown and Gregg Popovich."
The NBCA Tex Winter Lifetime Impact Award honors Hall of Famer Tex Winter, who as the architect of the triangle offense helped coached the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to nine NBA titles during his tenure as an assistant under Hall of Famer Phil Jackson.
