Spurs’ Harrisons — Barnes and Ingram — already have a strong bond

LAS VEGAS — Rookie Harrison Ingram wasn’t surprised to hear that 12-year veteran Harrison Barnes started his first full day in San Antonio as a member of the Spurs in the weight room.

“He’s a pro’s pro,” Ingram said.

Ingram, a second-round guard/forward, has first-hand knowledge of how hard Barnes works in the offseason. The two met for the first time in June 2023 when they competed against each other in North Carolina’s annual summer camp pick-up game between former and current Tar Heels.

Ingram remembers how Barnes, who starred at UNC for two season from 2010-2012, was all business that day.

“Here is Harrison Barnes from the Warriors’ (2015) championship team, UNC, former first-round pick, and he walks into the gym — everyone knows who he is — and he gets his work done, working hard every rep,” Ingram said. “You are looking at a guy like that, NBA champion, made hundreds of millions dollars playing basketball, and you see how hard he goes in the offseason. It’s easy to see him as an example.”

It’s also easy to see from the way Barnes and Ingram talk about each other that the Spurs’ Harrisons have already bonded.

“Unbelievable human being,” Barnes, 32, said of Ingram, 21. “I’m a huge fan of him. We got a chance to meet last summer, and he’s hilarious as you guys either know or will know, so I’m excited for him to be here. He’s going to work extremely hard.”

The Spurs traded for Barnes and signed future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul, 39, in part to teach youngsters like Ingram and lottery selection Stephon Castle, 19, how to become successful pros.

Lesson No. 1 came last Tuesday when Barnes and Paul wasted no time showing how serious they are about doing what it takes to prolong their careers.

After flying together to San Antonio the night before, the aging duo got things started by hitting the weights at the Victory Capital Performance Center on the same day they participated in an introductory news conference.

“You see what it takes to continue to come out here and play every single night, and, hopefully, those tips can be passed on,” Barnes said of setting an immediate example for the Spurs’ younger players. “Those practices can be passed on to a lot of these young guys coming into this league.”

As an NBA iron man, Barnes commands respect whenever he discusses conditioning or health.

The native of Ames, Iowa, played in all 82 games the last two seasons while with the Sacramento Kings and is ready to deliver another full season in his 13th campaign. Over the last three years, he has appeared in 222 consecutive games (all starts), the second-longest active streak in the NBA behind New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges’ streak of 472.

“A lot of time spent off the court working on my body,” Barnes said when asked for the secret to his durability.

He underscored that dedication with his weight room session with Paul, which also impressed Castle, the guard from Connecticut drafted fourth overall by the Spurs.

“It’s super impressive,” Castle said. “They have great résumés. They didn’t have to come in and do that right away. For them to set the tone of what they are going to bring to the team is super special. I can’t wait to start playing with them.”

Barnes feels the same way about Ingram, Castle and the team’s other young players.

“There’s good energy, good excitement, so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

So much so, he gave up millions of dollars to come to San Antonio.

The three-year, $54 million contract Barnes signed last summer to stay with the Kings included a 10% trade kicker, meaning that if Sacramento were to trade him, he would receive a 10% salary bonus on the remaining money on the deal.

Barnes confirmed at last week’s news conference that he waived the kicker — worth up to $3.7 million — to help facilitate the three-team deal that sent six-time All-Star and former Spur DeMar DeRozan from Chicago to Sacramento.

“There were definitely options where that was a factor, whether or not it would be waived or not,” Barnes said. “For the ability to be able to come to San Antonio, it was a pretty easy decision for me.”

The reason why centered on the “authentic warmth” he said he felt from the franchise and what it has accomplished under coach Gregg Popovich.

“Over the years, the Spurs have been one of the toughest teams I’ve competed against,” he said. “They’ve been a first-class organization in every way.”

Barnes joins the Spurs after spending the last six seasons with the Kings, who he helped reach the Western Conference playoffs in 2022-23 as the No. 3 seed, which ended the longest playoff drought in NBA history (16 seasons).

Last season, he averaged 12.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 38.7% from the 3-point line. He scored in double figures in 51 games, including notching 20-plus points in 13 games and 30-plus three times, including a career-high 39 at Golden State on Jan. 25.

For his career, Barnes is averaging 14.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 31.6 minutes after Golden State drafted him seventh overall in 2012. He played four seasons with the Warriors before a three-season stint with Dallas after joining the Mavericks in free agency.

But Barnes is looking only at the future now after joining the rebuilding Spurs and their 20-year-old cornerstone, 2023-2024 Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.

“I know there’s a lot of young talent in this group and I definitely want to try to maximize that,” Barnes said.

Underscoring his humble, grounded nature, he said he plans to go about becoming a team leader in organic fashion rather than by forcing himself on his new teammates.

“The best way to really connect with guys is just to do your process with them,” Barnes said. “It’s getting in the weight room, it’s getting on the court, it’s the cold tubs, the bus rides, the plane rides, all those type of things. You got to get to know guys on a personal level before you get into the nitty gritty of the basketball. So, that’s the part I’m most excited about, just connecting with guys.”

When it comes to Ingram, it’s already happened.

“Like I said, just a great human being and I think that Spurs fans will love him,” Barnes said.
