Had Kawhi Leonard not pulled out of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, he would have become the 10th former Spurs player to suit up for Team USA since the “Dream Team” rose up as a worldwide phenomenon over two decades ago.
Instead, that distinction will go to erstwhile Spurs guard Derrick White, who was named as Leonard’s replacement less than a month after he helped the Boston Celtics triumph over Dallas in the NBA Finals.
In the wake of White becoming an Olympian, here’s an overview of the current and former Spurs who have played for Team USA in the Summer Games since NBA players were permitted to compete back in 1992.
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich greets former Spurs player Boston Celtics Derrick White (9) at the end of the game on Saturday, Jan. 7 2023 at the AT&T Center. Boston Celtics defeated the San Antonio Spurs 121-116.
Paris 2024 Olympics: Competition begins July 27.
Derrick White: White is one of the Spurs’ greatest success stories. San Antonio drafted the Colorado product 29th overall in 2017, sent him to the G League to ripen as a rookie then reaped the rewards as White blossomed into an invaluable two-way contributor. Since being dealt to Boston at the 2022 trade deadline, White has made the All-Defensive team twice, become an NBA champion and signed a four-year, $125 million extension to remain with the Celtics.
Now, White will join the stacked United States national team for the Paris Olympics as it goes for its fifth straight gold.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics: 5-1 record, gold medal
Keldon Johnson: 4 games played, 1.0 point per game, 0.8 rebounds per game, 0.8 assists per game.
Johnson was a late addition to the 2020 U.S. Olympic team, joining the roster alongside then-Nuggets center Javale McGee as replacements for Cavaliers big Kevin Love (injury) and Wizards guard Bradley Beal (COVID-19 protocols). At 21, Johnson was the youngest player to board Team USA’s flight as it headed to Tokyo in 2021 for the delayed 2020 Olympics.
The young Spurs forward played sparingly on a team loaded with stars like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. Johnson scored all four of his points in a 120-66 romp over Iran in the group play stage.
Rio 2016 Olympics: 8-0, gold medal
DeMar DeRozan: 7 GP, 11.1 MPG, 6.6 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 0.9 APG, 0.9 SPG
DeRozan was still a couple years away from joining the Spurs when he jetted off to Brazil for the 2016 Olympics. His mid-range mastery translated well enough to FIBA-style ball as the All-Star wing averaged 6.6 points on 59.3% shooing in 11.1 minutes per game.
He chipped in with 11 points in a 94-91 win over Serbia in group play and added six in the rematch, a 96-66 blowout in the gold medal game.
Harrison Barnes: 4 GP, 7.8 MPG, 4.3 PPG, 1.8 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.5 SPG
Barnes just edged out then-24-year-old teammate Kyrie Irving for the distinction of “youngest Olympian” on the 2016 roster. He played a limited role off the bench, appearing in four games and averaging 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 7.8 minutes.
Now 32, Barnes is preparing to play his first season in San Antonio after arriving from Sacramento this summer via a three-team trade.
London 2012 Olympics: 8-0, gold medal
Chris Paul: 8 GP, 25.8 MPG, 8.3 PPG, 5.1 APG, 2.5 SPG, 2.5 RPG
Paul enjoyed another unblemished run with Team USA in 2012, bringing his lifetime Olympic record to 16-0. He once again led the Americans in assists to go along with a team-high 2.5 steals per game.
In a fierce clash for the gold medal with Spain, Paul finished with 11 points, three steals and two assists while playing 32 minutes in a 107-100 win.
Like Barnes, Paul is now preparing for his debut with the Spurs after signing a one-year deal this offseason.
Beijing 2008 Olympics: 8-0, gold medal
Chris Paul: 8 GP, 21.8 MPG, 8.0 PPG, 4.1 APG, 3.6 RPG, 2.3 SPG
Paul proved up to the task of helping the United States avenge its stunning flop in Athens by leading the team in assists and producing two big outings against rising Olympic nemesis Spain.
Paul tallied 14 points, eight assists, five steals and five rebounds in 23 minutes in a 119-82 win over Spain in group play. In a more competitive rematch with gold on the line, Paul finished with 13 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals to help Team USA secure a redemptive 118-107 win.
Athens 2004 Olympics: 5-3, bronze medal
Tim Duncan: 8 GP, 25.9 MPG, 12.9 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.4 BPG
It’s still shocking to think that one of the greatest winners in NBA history left Athens with a bronze medal that might as well have been made out of dung. Duncan led the team in rebounding and ranked second in scoring to Allen Iverson, but he struggled in both the 89-81 semifinals loss to Argentina and the narrow 105-96 win over Lithuania in the third-place game.
Foul trouble limited Duncan to 20 minutes in that world-shaking loss to Argentina. He finished with 10 points on 50% shooting, six rebounds and one block while teammate Manu Ginobili momentarily achieved basketball nirvana with an unforgettable 29-point performance.
Richard Jefferson: 8 GP, 18.5 MPG, 6.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.0 APG
Jefferson, who played for the Spurs from 2009 to 2012, didn’t bring his best game to Greece. He shot just 32.1% from the field and 26.1% from deep, though he did nearly drag Team USA to victory with a team-high 20 points on 6 of 8 shooting in a 94-90 loss to Lithuania in the group stage.
Sydney 2000 Olympics: 8-0, gold medal
Steve Smith: 8 GP, 15.4 MPG, 6.1 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 1.4 APG.
Smith, a Spur from 2001 to 2003, provided his classic versatility off the bench as the United States ran its record to 24-0 since NBA pros were permitted to play.
Antonio McDyess: 8 GP, 14.8 MPG, 7.6 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 0.9 APG
“Dice” made the most of his limited minutes, shooting 67.5% from the field and ranking second in rebounding as the United States went 8-0 yet again. McDyess, who played for the Spurs from 2009-11, was particularly destructive against France in group play with a team-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 106-94 victory.

Atlanta 1996 Olympics: 8-0, gold medal
David Robinson: 8 GP, 14.4 MPG, 12.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 0.5 SPG
Robinson returned four years later to help the United States claim another Olympic title, this time on its home turf in Atlanta. He ranked second in scoring to Charles Barkley (12.4) and led the team in rebounding.
The Admiral saved his best for the gold medal game against Serbia and Montenegro (also known as FR Yugoslavia). Robinson exploded for 28 points on 9 of 11 shooting, went 10-for-14 from the line, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two steals in a 95-69 win.
Barcelona 1992 Olympics: 8-0, gold medal
David Robinson: 8 GP, 16.8 MPG, 9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.8 SPG, 1.5 BPG.
Robinson was an imposing member of perhaps the most fabled American team to ever hit the Summer Olympics. The Dream Team routed its opponents by an average of 43.8 points per game and steamrolled Croatia by 32 in the gold medal game.
Robinson shot 57.4% during the tournament and went 3-for-3 with nine points in the final.
