Summer Spurs move to Vegas after leaving Sacramento with a splas

LAS VEGAS — Spurs rookies Stephon Castle and Harrison Ingram are ready to get their feet wet in Las Vegas after drenching Kenny Trevino in Sacramento.
In lieu of using adult beverages, Castle and Ingram joined their teammates in dousing Trevino with water after their 89-67 victory over China on Tuesday night to celebrate the Spurs video coordinator’s first Summer League coaching victory.
“He’s been super cool ever since I first got to San Antonio,” Castle, 19, said of Trevino. “I was happy for him, for sure.”
Trevino, 31, has formed a strong bond with the players.
“It helps being this young," he said. "I can relate to them a little bit and chop it up with them.”
After dropping their first two games at the California Classic, the Spurs closed their time in Sacramento in impressive fashion to gain some momentum heading into the Vegas portion of their three-week Summer League schedule.
“It’s always better to win than lose,” guard/forward Sidy Cissoko said. “It can only help.”
Although player development, not winning, is the top priority this time of year, the Spurs couldn’t wait to pour water on Trevino in a celebration that underscored their affection for their baby-faced skipper.
“It was great,” Cissoko said. “He told me a couple days ago he got his first (coaching) win as a G League (assistant with the Austin Spurs a few years ago) because one of the other coaches was sick. I told him that doesn’t count. He’s the head coach of this team, and everyone is proud of him.”
Castle, the fourth-overall pick from Connecticut, finished with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists against the Chinese. Ingram, a second-round selection from North Carolina, recorded a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double.
The Spurs open their Vegas schedule against Portland on Saturday night in a game that features a reunion of lottery picks from Connecticut’s national championship squad: Castle and Blazers center Donovan Clingan (seventh overall).
Castle might have the edge in the matchup given the outing will be Portland’s Summer League opener. All 30 NBA teams send squads to Vegas while only a handful played at Sacramento and the Salt Lake City Summer League.
“In Vegas, some teams don’t even know each other yet,” Cissoko said. “We’ll prepare. We’ll play together and have fun. We can’t all be in the Olympics or with our national team. So, if you get to play basketball in the summer, you have to enjoy it.”
The Spurs held their first practice in Vegas on Thursday. Coach Gregg Popovich and assistant Brett Brown attended the two-hour workout.
Summer roster bolstered
The Spurs added three players to their Vegas roster: forward Donovan Williams, guard D’Moi Hodge and forward Ibrahima Diallo.
Williams, a 22-year-old Houston native, and Hodge were NBA rookies last season. It should benefit Castle to have experienced players to work with as he looks to improve his decision-making as a point guard.
Williams played in two games last season for Atlanta after going undrafted out of UNLV following two seasons at Texas. Hodge, 25, played in seven games last season for the Lakers after going undrafted out of Missouri following two years at Cleveland State.
Diallo, 25, is a 7-foot undrafted rookie from Central Florida after playing two seasons at Ohio State and two seasons at San Jose State.
Guard David Duke Jr. also rejoined the Spurs in Vegas after having his free agent rights renounced so the Spurs could sign Chris Paul and trade for Harrison Barnes.
Ingram adjusting to NBA size, talent
The coaching staff is working with Ingram to help him make quicker decisions with the ball.
“Whether it’s a shot or it’s a drive, don’t hold it,” Trevino told the 21-year-old guard/forward.
Ingram said he had more time to decide what to do in college.
“Here in the NBA, guys are bigger,” he said. "You have other good players on the team. You have to make that decision faster.
“It’s an adjustment. I’m not going to say I’m perfect right away. There are times when I held the ball and times when I made the right play. I just try to trust my work. (Tuesday night) the game slowed down. I was making the right play and the right passes.”
From an overall perspective, Trevino likes what he’s seen from the 6-foot-6 Dallas native.
“He’s a bigger wing defender," Trevino said. “He’s got a body on him. He can drive it. He’s got good touch around the rim. His shot looks good. And I’m empowering him to shoot it. He’s a utility player who can do a number of things. He doesn’t need the ball in his hands. He’s a good screen-setter. His activity is off the charts, with his hands and with his feet. That’s what we’re asking for.”
Cissoko steps up as leader
Cissoko has made good on his promise to be a team leader for the Summer Spurs.
“He’s been here,” Castle said of Cissoko having one year of Summer League play under his belt. “He’s seen if before. It’s only right for us to listen to what he’s saying. He’s been leading the pack and doing a good job of that.”
The Spurs drafted Cissoko in the second-round last season after the Frenchman played a season for now-defunct G League Ignite. He told the media at last week’s Summer League training camp that he wanted to be a leader in Sacramento and Las Vegas.
“I see myself from last year, and I try to help the rookies not do the same mistakes I did last year,” he said. “To not be shy. They were great today. I didn’t even have to talk to them. I’m not worried about them. They’re both doing pretty good.”
