SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Spurs rookie Harrison Ingram arrived for his first Summer League practice last week and couldn’t believe his eyes.
The guy with the whistle shouting orders and putting the team through its paces looked younger than most of the players on the floor.
This was the summer squad’s head coach?
“At first I was surprised,” Ingram said of his first impression of Kenny Trevino, the 31-year-old tasked with leading the Spurs’ Summer Leaguers in Sacramento and Las Vegas. “But when I saw his energy and his command of the room, you know why he is the coach.”
During the regular NBA season, Trevino serves as the Spurs’ video coordinator, a job he has held since 2023.
It is something of a prestige position.
Others who have jumped from the Spurs’ film room to an NBA head coaching post include Mike Budenholzer, James Borrego and Will Hardy.
Trevino’s path to the video coordinator role has been unlike any in the league.
A native of Laredo, Trevino played basketball and baseball at Alexander High School before moving to San Antonio to attend UTSA.
He began his NBA career as a Spurs ball boy in 2013, after being discovered by then-equipment manager Travis Wade while working at a northwest-side car wash.
“I was the guy that scrubbed bugs off the front of the cars,” said Trevino, who was still in college at the time.
A regular customer, Wade took a liking to Trevino and offered to put in a word with the Spurs, who hired him to be Wade’s assistant.
When Wade left the team in 2018, Trevino took over as the team’s head equipment manager, and eventually worked his way into the film room.
In short order, Trevino went from scraping dead insects off of Buicks to cutting up video of Chris Paul pick-and-rolls for Gregg Popovich.
For a young man who had only considered the idea of being an NBA coach in his wildest of dreams, the film coordinator job was eye-opening to say the least.
“You not only see hours of film, but you’re able to be in the coaches’ meetings,” Trevino said. “That’s the biggest thing. When you get to be a fly on the wall and you hear Coach Pop and those guys talking about scouting reports, that’s really insightful for a young coach.”

Trevino got his big break this summer in part because other Spurs staffers were indisposed coaching with various national teams preparing for the Paris Olympics.
Last year’s Summer League coach, assistant Matt Neilsen, is on staff with Team Australia. Mitch Johnson, who has also taken on the Spurs’ summer gig in the past, is working with Team USA.
Player development coach Josh Brannon is helping with a Polish national team that includes Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan.
When Popovich and Spurs general manager Brian Wright offered Summer League duties to Trevino, he leapt at the chance.
A number of previous Spurs Summer League coaches have gone on to become head coaches as well, a list that includes Budenholzer, Hardy, Jacque Vaughn, Taylor Jenkins and Becky Hammon.
Trevino lists Hardy as the mentor who has perhaps rubbed off on him most. Hardy, too, once guided a Spurs summer squad while looking barely old enough to shave.
“He was a younger coach and he was somebody that I took notes on and I like to emulate,” Trevino said. “He’s got a good voice as a coach. He does it his way and I’m finding out how to do it my way.”
Don’t be fooled by Trevino’s baby face. The Spurs Summer Leaguers view him as a clear-cut leader.
Ingram said he sees similarities between Trevino and his college coach at North Carolina, Hubert Davis.
“We can be chatting in the locker room, but when (Trevino) walks in we’re quiet and we’re listening,” Ingram said. “He commands great respect as a head coach.”
Trevino’s Summer Spurs have gotten off to something of a rough start, losing its first two games against at the California Classic in Sacramento by a combined 58 points.
The team was set to wrap up play in Sacramento with a game Tuesday against the Chinese national team before heading to Las Vegas later this week.
Trevino has been at something of a disadvantage given the makeup of the Spurs’ summer roster, which features only one first-round pick (Stephon Castle) and two second rounders (Ingram and Sidy Cissoko).
Castle and Cissoko – arguably the Summer Spurs’ two best players – did not play in the loss to the Kings. Still, Trevino paced the sideline, clapping, instructing and encouraging players until the final horn.
“We lost by 20,” Ingram said, “But the energy he brings, the confidence he instills, it was infectious.”
Jamaree Bouyea, the point guard of the Spurs’ summer league team, agreed.
“Win, lose or draw, he’s going to have that energy,” Bouyea said. “He’s giving us all the right plays, all the right reads. He’s doing everything he can. We’ve just got to go out there and help him.”
Like any other 30-something in his shoes, Trevino harbors aspirations of one day becoming an NBA head coach. It is an ambition Trevino realizes can only be fulfilled in due time, one step at a time.
Once Summer League is over, Trevino will return to the Spurs’ video room – where it turns out he already has his dream job.
“I’m in that video room and I love it,” Trevino said. “Yeah sure, one day I do want to be a head coach. But right now I’m focused on being the best video coordinator I could be.”
Even on its worst day, it beats cleaning bug guts off of Buicks.
