SACRAMENTO – DeMar DeRozan walked into the Golden1 Center on Saturday night to a hero’s welcome.
An hour before, news had broken that Sacramento had acquired the All-Star guard in a sign-and-trade deal with Chicago. DeRozan made his way to a courtside seat for the Kings’ Summer League game against the Chinese national team, basking in the adoration from his new team’s fans along the way.
By then, most Spurs fans had exited the building in the wake of their Summer League team’s lopsided loss to Charlotte earlier in the day.
Had they remained, the silver-and-black faithful would have been apt to give DeRozan a standing ovation, too.
For the Spurs, DeRozan remains the gift that keeps on giving.
To make room for DeRozan’s new three-year, $74 million contract, the Kings had to first offload salary. Enter the Spurs, who stood eager to help – for a price.
For their role in facilitating the trade, the Spurs received veteran forward Harrison Barnes and a 2031 unprotected pick swap from Sacramento.
In what amounts to a salary dump for Chicago, the Bulls received a pair of future second-round picks and journeyman guard Chris Duarte.
For the Spurs, the deal amounts to a slow-release coup.
It made them better, both now and in the future. And Spurs general manager Brian Wright had to surrender nothing but cap space they had readily available to make it happen.
A 12-year NBA veteran, the 32-year-old Barnes played in all 82 games in each of the past two seasons. He averaged 12.2 points and three rebounds last season for the Kings, while shooting 38.7% from 3-point range.

The arrival of the 6-foot-8 Barnes gives the Spurs added size in the frontcourt, and helps address a desperate need for 3-point shooters for a team that was one of the worst in the league from distance last season.
Barnes spent the past 5½ seasons with the Kings. The No. 7 pick in the 2012 draft has averaged 14 points and 4.9 rebounds in a career that includes stops in Dallas and Golden State.
He represents an upgrade over the 23-year-old Julian Champagnie, the undrafted signee who most often occupied the Spurs’ starting small forward slot last season.
Like the Spurs’ other notable addition this offseason – 12-time All-Star point guard Chris Paul – Barnes brings a wealth of experience to a roster that was the youngest in the NBA last season and features the league’s unanimous Rookie of the Year in Victor Wembanyama.
Unlike Paul, Barnes’ resume includes an NBA championship, as he was a member of the Warriors’ 2015 title team.
Barnes has two years and $39.8 million remaining on his contract.
The pick swap the Spurs obtained from the Kings is their fifth between now and 2031. The list of teams the Spurs reserve the right to exchange picks with also includes Atlanta in 2026, Boston in 2028 and Dallas and Minnesota in 2030.
The Spurs are banking one of those teams will be bad enough in the appropriate year to allow them to draft another young star or that someone will want one of those swaps or a few of them when or if the Spurs decide to deal for another star to put alongside Wembanyama.
For their latest trade haul, the Spurs have DeRozan to thank.
The club’s rebuilding project began in earnest in August 2021, when the Spurs sent DeRozan to Chicago in a sign-and-trade deal that netted them Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Amino and future draft assets.
More importantly, that deal greased the skids for the Spurs to be able to draft Wembanyama No. 1 overall last summer.
Saturday’s DeRozan deal redux should go far toward making the Spurs more competitive this season.
If the Spurs get particularly lucky, it could give them a shot in the arm in the 2031 draft, at a time when Wembanyama will be at the height of his prime.
Give the Spurs’ front office kudos for making it happen, but save some applause for DeRozan as well.
His move west helped make it happen.
