5 things to know about new Spurs point guard Chris Paul

Golden State Warriors guard Chris Paul (3) in the first quarter during an NBA game against the San Antonio Spurs at Chase Center in San Francisco on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023.

When Chris Paul trots onto the court in a Spurs jersey sometime in October, he will become the 11th player in NBA history to stretch a career across 20 seasons.

The 39-year-old point guard’s prime passed by some time ago, but the future Hall of Famer still has enough game to make a difference and potentially help usher San Antonio back into the playoffs for the first time since 2019. From longtime Western Conference antagonist to Spurs elder statesman, here are a few things fans should know about Paul after he agreed to a one-year, $11 million contract with the team.

1. Paul has a winning record against the Spurs.

Though the Spurs have fallen on hard times, when Paul entered the league out of Wake Forest in 2005 the Tim Duncan-led dynasty was still a juggernaut with three more NBA Finals appearances and two titles yet to come. That makes his 34-29 regular-season record against Gregg Popovich’s outfit all the more impressive. (Even Kobe Bryant finished with a 43-48 lifetime record against the Spurs, postseason included.)

Paul has also duked it out with the Spurs in three playoff series, once with New Orleans (2008) and twice with the Clippers (2012, 2015). At age 22, he averaged 23.7 points on 50% shooting, 10.7 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals to push the defending champions to seven games in a Western Conference semifinal.

The Spurs swept the “Lob City” Clippers in the 2012 semifinals, but Paul exacted some vengeance in the first round of the 2015 playoffs. In another seven-game struggle, Paul averaged 22.7 points, 7.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds and two steals to clinch his first and only series win over San Antonio. He was masterful in an 111-109 Game 7 win with a team-high 27 points on 9 of 13 and six assists with just one turnover.

Counting those three playoff series, Paul owns a 41-40 record against the Spurs.

2. He’s among the most decorated players in NBA history.

Few players in league history can match Paul’s trove of awards and accolades.

He missed becoming a unanimous Rookie of the Year winner in 2006 by one measly vote after averaging 16.1 points, 7.8 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals and helping New Orleans improve from 18 wins to 38 despite no player averaging more than 17 points per game. After that debut, Paul was annually showered in awards and recognition.

Paul is tied for 17th all-time with 12 All-Star appearances, tied for 12th with 11 All-NBA selections and tied for seventh with nine All-Defensive nods. He’s also one of just 11 players in league history to be voted onto the All-Defensive first team at least seven times.

In international play, Paul helped the United States win Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012. Team USA went a combined 16-0 during those runs.

3. Still an elite facilitator entering Year 20.

In his lone season with Golden State, Paul averaged career lows in points (9.2), assists (6.8) and minutes (26.4) across 58 games (18 starts). Even in a diminished role, he remained among the league’s craftiest facilitators.

At age 38, Paul led the league in assist ratio (41.1) and ranked third in assist/turnover ratio (5.2). He also finished eighth in potential assists per game (12.9) and 15th in assist points created per game (17.3) among players with at least 50 appearances, per NBA tracking data.

On the whole, the Warriors were a shade better with Paul on the court (2.8 net rating) than off (1.8)

4. The “Point God” earned his moniker.

Entering this season, Paul is third in career assists (11,894), fifth in postseason assists (1,233), fifth in assists per game (9.4) and 12th in postseason assists per game (8.3). He trails only Hall of Famer John Stockton (50.2%) in career assist percentage (44.6%).

Paul is just one of six players to claim at least five regular-season assists titles, along with Stockton (nine), Bob Cousy (eight), Oscar Robertson (six), Jason Kidd (five) and Steve Nash (five). And he did it with three separate teams (New Orleans Hornets, L.A. Clippers, Phoenix Suns), a feat matched only by Kevin Porter (four titles with three teams).

5. A diminutive defensive menace.

Paul has been able to offset his unremarkable stature (6-foot with a 6-4 wingspan) with extraordinary lateral quickness and supernatural court awareness. He’s won six steals titles, twice as many as anyone else in league history.

After 19 years, Paul is third in career steals (2,614), 10th in steals per game (2.1), 10th in postseason steals per game (1.9) and 11th in postseason steals (287). And he averaged 1.2 swipes per game last season, joining Stockton, Kidd and LeBron James as the only players to average at least that many steals 19 times.
