Sidy Cissoko wasn’t about to let a painful knee prevent him from playing with the Spurs late last season after spending most of his rookie year either on the bench or in the G League.
“I’m a tough guy, so even if you cut my knee, I’m still going to play,” the guard/forward said Tuesday after the Spurs’ Summer League squad’s first practice.
With the Spurs decimated by injuries, the second-round pick performed well while logging five or more minutes in six of the Spurs’ final seven games, including recording 20-plus minutes in three of the final four contests.
Over those four outings, Cissoko averaged 24.5 minutes, 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting 57.7% from the field.
It was an impressive way to finish the season. And he did it on a sore right knee.
“My knee was really swelling,” Cissoko said.
A few weeks after the season ended, the 20-year-old Frenchman underwent arthroscopic surgery last month to clean out debris.
“It was not a big deal,” Cissoko said. “It was just like a cleanup. Since then, I’m good. My knee still swells a little bit, but we are trying to manage that.”
Spurs general manager Brian Wright indicated last week that Cissoko wouldn’t play during the Sacramento portion of Summer League that begins Saturday, but Cissoko said Tuesday he plans on playing in both California and Las Vegas. The Spurs open play in Nevada on July 13.
Cissoko was limited during practice Tuesday.
“He’s recovering,” said Kenny Trevino, the Spurs’ video coordinator who is serving as coach of the Summer League team. “We are looking forward to seeing him a little bit in Vegas, but he has had a good ramp-up process. We saw him out there today and he looked good.”
As a Summer League veteran, Cissoko said he will have a leadership role in Sacramento and Vegas. The Spurs drafted him 44th overall after he spent a season with now-defunct G League Ignite.
“I want to show the rookies they can count on me if they need help and stuff like that to get more comfortable,” Cissoko said. “I know I was pretty nervous as a rookie last summer. It can be pretty tough because of the media and stuff like that, but I don’t want them to be nervous or to stress. It’s just a basketball game.”
The Spurs list the 6-foot-7 Cissoko at 230 pounds after listing him at 225 for the season finale, but he said he actually has lost weight through a combination of eating right and working out more.
“I think I grew up a little bit and lost probably like 20 pounds,” he said.
No matter how much he actually weighs, Cissoko “looks great,” a teammate said.
“He’s a very dynamic player,” said guard David Duke Jr., who played with Cissoko in Austin and San Antonio. “He can drive the ball, he can pass, can even score the ball, very athletic, can defend. I’m excited for his growth. I think this year is a chance for him to take another step and get into the rotation, find his way. I love playing alongside him.”
Castle inks rookie deal
The Spurs announced Tuesday the signing of lottery pick Stephon Castle to his rookie contract.
In accordance with the NBA’s rookie scale for the fourth overall pick, Castle’s four-year deal is worth about $41.4 million, with a first-year salary of $9.1 million.
Castle is expected to meet with the media after Wednesday’s practice.
The 19-year-old native of Georgia helped Connecticut win its second NCAA title in a row this past season, averaging 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He's set to play in both Sacramento and Las Vegas.Officially official

Although the sample size is small, Castle has already impressed his new teammates.
“He’s a great guy, energy guy, amazing,” Cissoko said. “He can do everything on the court.”
Players learn Spurs’ way in first practice
Trevino and his staff focused Tuesday on teaching what he called the Spurs’ principles to the 10 rookies on the 16-player Summer League squad.
“When you think about the Spurs as a team, (it’s) getting back in transition, defense, setting our half court defense, playing physical on defense, what you’ve seen for decades now from the Spurs organization, playing as a team, playing together on the offensive end,” he said. “It’s not revolving around one person. It’s all five guys on the court.”
Trevino said the two-hour workout was a lively affair.
“We had some good energy in here, so it was good,” he said.
