Spurs make decisions regarding two young players

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - JANUARY 19: P.J. Washington #25 of the Charlotte Hornets guards Dominick Barlow #26 of the San Antonio Spurs in the fourth quarter during their game at Spectrum Center on January 19, 2024 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dominick Barlow’s improbable feel-good journey with the Spurs may have come to an end.

The Spurs did not tender a qualifying offer to Barlow ahead of Saturday’s deadline, a decision that allowed the 6-foot-9 forward/center to become an unrestricted free agent after he split the last two seasons with the Spurs and their G League affiliate in Austin.

But a league source said the Spurs still have interest in the 21-year-old New Jersey native, so it’s possible a deal could be reached in free agency, which began at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Barlow averaged 4.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists last season while shooting 49.6% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range. He played in 33 games with the Spurs in 2023-24 after making 28 appearances as a rookie in 2022-23.

The Spurs converted Barlow’s two-way contract in March to a standard NBA deal.

“He is someone who plays in a solid manner,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “You don’t see him making mistakes really. He is not really a shooter. He is a pretty good defender and he goes to the boards pretty well, runs well. So, all those kind of basic things he puts together and plays a game that kind of complements everybody else.”

The Spurs signed Barlow as an undrafted free agent in summer 2022 after he spent a season with Overtime Elite, a start-up basketball league based in Atlanta that develops NBA prospects prospects ages 16 to 20.

Barlow became the first Overtime Elite alumnus to make an NBA roster after the Spurs gave him a two-way contract. He was so raw when he arrived in San Antonio that Popovich joked the team’s scouts must must have discovered him out on the streets.

“Was he a bagger at H-E-B or working at the gas station?” Popovich said.

But Barlow’s work ethic coupled with the tutoring he received from the developmental staff helped turn him into a high-energy backup who Popovich turned to on more than one occasion last season to give the team a spark.

“He’s really versatile, especially defensively, where he can get out and switch and move his feet and play on the perimeter,” Spurs general manager Brian Wright said after watching Barlow play in February in a G League all-star game at All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis. "But he can also play inside and rebound and contest shots.

“There are not a lot of guys like that. He’s obviously, young and still developing but doing a great job. Offensively, he’s made real strides with his touch around the basket and improving his range on the jump shot. We are happy with how he is continuing to grow.”

While Barlow became a free agent Saturday, the Spurs did tender qualifying offers to two of their other young players, a league source said. Those moves made forward Sandro Mamukelashvili and guard David Duke Jr., restricted free agents, meaning the Spurs can match any offers they receive or sign them outright.

Mamukelashvili averaged just 9.8 minutes per game over 46 games last season, but he came on strong in the final weeks with five starts in April. In span, he averaged 26.1 minutes, 11.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while shooting 38.5% from the three-line.

The highlight of that run came in a 121-120 win over Denver when Mamukelashvili recorded a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double.

“He deserves a very serious discussion,” Popovich said in April when asked if Mamukelashvili deserved a new contract after playing the 2023-24 season on a one-year, $2 million deal.

Mamukelashvili, 25, said he would like to remain with the Spurs.

“I love being here,” the 6-9 Seton Hall alumnus said. “I love being around the guys, connecting with them, learning, growing. I’m looking forward to the future, and if it’s here, I’ll be very happy.”

Duke, 24, played in only a handful of games for the Spurs while on a two-way contract last season, but the Spurs like his defensive potential. In 34 games for the Spurs’ G League affiliate in Austin, the 6-4 Providence-ex averaged 19.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.1 steals.
