Cleaning the Glass

The focus on Jeremy Sochan’s third year leap

Detroit Pistons v San Antonio Spurs

There’s a lot of work to do on offense.

San Antonio Spurs’ forward Jeremy Sochan is approaching a pivotal third year in his development, and his performance in 2024-25 could indicate if he is part of the long-term plans or a trade chip. He doesn’t want to take the summer lightly, as he will compete on the Polish national team’s training camp roster for a spot in the Paris Olympics. Sochan was already training with that group 10 weeks after left ankle surgery.

Earning a spot, which he will likely do, will allow him to showcase added dimensions to his game.

At the Spurs’ end-of-season press conference on April 15, Sochan was asked how he would improve. He said, “I still need to improve my shot. It’s a work in progress. There’s things I did this season that’s positive.” Ball handling, defense and consistency were also mentioned as areas of focus.

As a sophomore, Sochan refined his disruption, holding opposing guards to 43.2 percent shooting while covering them for 42.5 percent of his time on defense. In his rookie year, guards converted 51 percent of attempts against Sochan. His ability to bother dynamic guards will be expected in the future.

Yet forwards have registered more than half their looks (51.2 percent) while he has checked them. It’s not the whole story- he spends much time on the elite players. At 6-foot-8 with a seven-foot wingspan and decent foot speed, Sochan has the tools to guard up and likely will elevate his impact with added assignments. However, some players are too tall, and the release point is unshakeable.

In multiple games this year, he defended 10 players for at least 20 field goal attempts, six of which were forwards -Kawhi Leonard, Jaren Jackson Jr., Kyle Kuzma, Lauri Markkanen, Kevin Durant and DeMar DeRozan.

The former lottery pick was most successful tagging Kuzma, allowing six of 23 field goals by contesting his jumper on time and blowing up the drive.

Jackson, who is not a fluid offensive player, was bothered on transition rim attacks, post ups, face-ups and jumpers. Sochan permitted eight of 21 baskets across three outings.

DeRozan tallied 46.4 percent accuracy, per NBA tracking data. The former Spur schooled Sochan at long and mid-range on Jan. 13. But on Dec. 8, he shut him down by locking and trailing closely to take away the catch-and-shoot jumper and harassing the drive in transition plus the half-court.

Yet, he wasn’t nearly as effective versus Durant, Markkanen and Leonard despite being in good position on many plays through various matches. Durant, who has center height, took him to the hole and shot over his head, off the dribble, and on the catch. Markkanen, a seven-foot forward, beat him at close range on putbacks, scored on transition plus half-court cuts, and hoisted in his face. Leonard ran him through screens and bumped after the catch, swished jumpers, and got him in the air on fakes to score.

On defense, Sochan has immense upside. He needs to continue to hit the film room to learn the tendencies of the NBA’s top tier and stop biting on fakes. The latter is crucial because it compromises the rest of the team by forcing an unnecessary rotation.

On offense, Sochan needs to add range, raise accuracy, enhance passing and polish ball handling.

In 2023-24, 46.5 percent of the shots he attempted were fewer than five feet from the basket, making 57.6 percent of tries. Working diligently on producing from mid and long distance is imperative so that defenders don’t cheat off him and help on other Spurs. He’ll need a similar jump in 3-point percentage (6.2) as he made in his second year while adding more attempts to help his crew.

Last season, he registered 48.7 percent of effective field goals, good enough for the 27th percentile of all combo guards, per Cleaning the Glass.

Although, he did score well without dribbling, making over half his shots and recording 68.8 percent of those from two-point range. Running more actions with Sochan as the on or off-ball screener will open cutting avenues. And playing out of the dunker spot is a way to capitalize on his higher efficiency by the rim while Victor Wembanyama is drawing the attention around the nail. In year two, 70 percent of his tallied marks were assisted by a teammate.

To boot, drop coverage- the screener’s defender going low, trying to check two players at once- must be a scheme that he starts punishing from the outside so that he can become another dependable option to run pick-and-roll with Wembanyama.

As a passer, his three favorite targets (frequency made/received percentage) in 2023-24 were Tre Jones (19.7), Devin Vassell (16.4) and Wembanyama (14). Expanding on the connection with these teammates is key. Vassell and Wembanyama should be spammed on pick-and-pop/roll sets. The latter more so, to take advantage of his vertical spacing and pressure put on the defense in the paint.

The handle must get better to break down mismatches after the switch on the perimeter easier and so 10 eyes aren’t glued to the more important threats while he makes plays. This also allows the shooters and cutters to get open. On top of that, it would help bring down on his turnovers; last season, he committed 40 by losing the ball on his own, per Basketball Reference.

“[My] mindset is in the right place,” Sochan said in April. “Surgery went well. So now it’s working to get stronger and better.”
