The Spurs traded the 35th overall pick of the 2024 NBA draft to the Indiana Pacers for the 36th pick and cash on Thursday, league sources confirmed to the Express-News.
The Spurs selected Kansas guard Johnny Furphy with their original second-round pick as part of the deal, then turned around and selected Spanish point guard Juan Nunez via Indiana at No. 36. As part of the deal, the Pacers now own the rights to Furphy.
Nunez, 20, has spent the past two years with Ratiopharm Ulm of the German Bundesliga.The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 10.8 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while helping Ratiopharm capture the league championship. Prior to that, Nunez played off the bench for Real Madrid in Spain’s top pro league during the 2021-22 season
Nunez is now the Spurs’ second 2024 draftee, joining fourth overall pick Stephon Castle. San Antonio also selected Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham with the eighth overall pick on Wednesday, but in a pre-arranged deal, traded his rights to Minnesota for an unprotected 2031 first-round pick in 2031 and a 2030 top-one protected pick.

But Nunez could be stashed away overseas while the Spurs retain his rights, a cash-saving tactic that the organization has employed in the past. Trading their eighth overall pick also saved around $7 million heading into this offseason.
Barring another trade, the Spurs are set to pick again at No. 48.
