Rather than use their second lottery selection during the first round of the 2024 NBA draft night, the Spurs traded the No. 8 pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a 2031 unprotected first round pick and a top-one protected 2030 pick swap on Wednesday, sources told the Express-News.
As part of the deal, the Spurs selected Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham, who will start his pro career in Minnesota instead of San Antonio. Dillingham averaged 15.2 points, 3.9 assists and 2.0 3-pointers on 44.4% shooting and was named the 2024 SEC Sixth Man of the Year
The Spurs addressed their need for a high-upside guard and playmaker about 30 minutes prior to making this trade by selecting standout UConn freshman Stephon Castle with the fourth overall pick. While the Spurs coveted additional shooting to space the floor around superstar Victor Wembanyama, they opted to instead make a deal with Minnesota.
By trading the No. 8 pick, the Spurs will enter this offseason with $26 million in cap space, per Paul Garcia of Project Spurs.
This pick originally belonged to Toronto but was conveyed to the Spurs when the Raptors finished outside the top six in this year’s draft lottery. The Raptors’ top-six protected pick was included in a 2023 trade deadline deal that saw the Spurs send center Jakob Poeltl to Toronto.
Barring another trade, the Spurs will not be on the clock again until the second round begins at 3 p.m. Thursday. They currently own the No. 35 and No. 48 picks.
