Suns don’t need any visual aids this time around
PHOENIX - For the Suns, it was a little more difficult this time without access to the Spurs’ playbook.
You’ll recall that the last time the Spurs were in America West Arena, the Suns were able to be in the right place at the right time all the time thanks to a careless - and still yet-to-be-named - member of the Spurs who left his playbook where a member of the Phoenix coaching staff could find it.
Given that teaching aid back in January, the Suns built a 20-point lead after three quarters en route to a 100-79 thrashing of the Spurs. On Sunday night, it wasn’t until the final five minutes that the Suns exploded and the Spurs faded away.
“It was a hell of a game until that point,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
Yes and, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, did you like the play?
The last five minutes accounted for the lopsided nature of the final score. But the final 12 minutes were really the Spurs undoing.
Somehow, a one-point Spurs advantage after three quarters turned into an 18-point defeat - the third loss in three outings against the Suns, who now own the all-important tiebreaker.
Of course, every one of the elite teams in the West is dominating the Spurs, who now stand 1-9 combined against the Suns (0-3), SuperSonics (0-2), Lakers (0-2) and Jazz (1-2).
Certainly, fatigue was a factor for the Spurs last night. Saturday’s two-point loss at the Alamodome was a tough, physical duel with Utah.
“But you can’t make excuses,” Spurs guard Vinny Del Negro said. “You get paid to play, so you play.”
Agreed.
The Spurs played terribly in the final quarter, going only 3 for 12 from the field and scoring just one field goal in the last 4:50. They did make a single shot from the floor in the final 3:17. Poor decision- making and ball movement contributed to the Spurs’ collapse on the offensive end.
Suns guard Jason Kidd orchestrated the downfall on the defensive end for the Spurs, posting up and finding the open man. All of that falls into the lap of Spurs guard Avery Johnson, a gritty soul who suffered his worst game of the season with two points and six turnovers.
Spurs rookie Tim Duncan sank just 4 of 17 from the field and allowed his frustation to goad him into silly, obvious fouls.
Duncan was the object of the Suns’ attention. Yet, part of the adjustment to the NBA for Duncan is knowing he’ll be the focus - and won’t get the benefit of the doubt from the officials at times.
A key for Duncan, though, was going 9 for 11 from the free-throw line after his miss from the line Saturday cost the Spurs a chance to tie Utah in the final seconds. That speaks to Duncan’s mental toughness.
If you’re keeping track at home, the Suns have outscored the Spurs 53-24 in the last two fourth quarters. In the season series, the Suns have 53 points on 48 Spurs turnovers - 22 points on 24 errors Sunday night.
Playing without Robinson, Sean Elliott and Chuck Person, the Spurs really had no chance against the Suns, who bring Danny Manning, Kevin Johnson and Hot Rod Williams off the bench.
Thus, the bottom line: The Suns are better.
I know the Spurs were without Robinson, Elliott and Person on Sunday night. But even with Robinson and Person on Jan. 9, the Spurs lost to Phoenix by 21.
Sunday night is best summed up by a play in the third quarter when AJ watched helplessly as Kidd lofted an alley-oop pass to Antonio McDyess.
In his squeaky Cajun drawl, AJ yelled, “Look out!”
It was too late. Again.
