State of Florida may come after Maxwell

TORONTO - An official of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Department in Florida said Friday that there was a ``very good’’ chance authorities would pursue Spurs guard Vernon Maxwell outside of the state lines in order to make him comply with court-ordered child- support payments. Maxwell was said to be suffering from anemia when he missed the Spurs’ recent trip to Orlando and Miami. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Department had made arrangements with police in Orange and Dade counties to arrest Maxwell when he came into their territory.

Maxwell is from Gainesville, Fla.

A warrant for Maxwell’s arrest was issued Feb. 7 involving failure to pay child support in Alachua County. The Spurs played in Orlando on Feb. 28 and in Miami on March 2. They are not scheduled to return to Florida this season.

There's a good possibility that we'll pursue him out of the state,'' said Sgt. Jim Lybarger, who works in the department's warrants division. We believe that he is aware that he owes, and we believe that he can pay, so I would say there’s a good chance.‘’

Lybarger said he thinks Maxwell should come forward and make the payments.

Hopefully,'' Lybarger said, he’ll take care of it immediately.‘’

Lybarger said the complaint against Maxwell is not a criminal offense. But he said Maxwell can be taken into custody and forced to meet with a child support enforcement officer.

Maxwell told the San Antonio Express-News that he has done nothing wrong.

``With the amount he owes, I doubt there could be a

misunderstanding,‘’ said Lybarger, who indicated that he couldn’t divulge the amount. ``I know how much he owes monthly. I would say (the total amount represents) multiple, multiple months.‘’

The last few weeks have been rough for Maxwell. He was taken out of the lineup and went on to miss seven games when the team announced that he was suffering from anemia. During that time, a Houston judge granted a default judgment against him in a civil suit, ordering Maxwell to pay $592,000 for exposing a woman to herpes.

And now, authorities in Florida are after him.

Maxwell, in Toronto with the Spurs on Friday, confirmed that he has a child in Alachua County, in Gainesville. But he insisted that he has made all the child-support payments. In that regard, he said he doesn’t think he needs to call the authorities.

Gregg Popovich, the Spurs’ coach and vice president of basketball operations, would not comment on the matter.

Popovich wouldn’t say whether he knew about the warrant before the the team left for Florida last week.

Brushing off any suggestion that the Spurs left Maxwell in San Antonio to avoid an arrest, Popovich said, ``It’s well-documented that Vernon had anemia.‘’

Lybarger said he didn’t know whether the Spurs had been contacted about the warrant.

``But I can almost promise you that if he ever plays basketball in Florida, he’ll be arrested’’ if he hasn’t satisfied the payment schedule, Lybarger said.

Maxwell missed five consecutive games before the Spurs left for Florida on Feb. 27.

Spurs go to the Max to halt losing streak

TORONTO - Vernon Maxwell disregarded two weeks of off-court problems and exploded for 34 points. Vinny Del Negro gave the Toronto Raptors a chance to send the game into overtime, and then he snuffed those hopes with a surprising defensive stop.

Together, the two helped the Spurs break a cumbersome seven-game losing streak Friday night with a 106-103 victory over the Raptors.

``We only had eight (healthy) guys, so we knew we had to compete hard,‘’ said Maxwell, who tied his season-high in points.

``But we knew we were playing a young team. What we tried to do was match their intensity, stay close and then pull it out at the end. That’s what we did.‘’

With the victory, the Spurs (14-46) won for the first time since Feb. 21. Also, they avoided being swept on the longest road trip of the season, improving to 1-4 on the 10-day journey heading into the finale tonight at Indiana.

On top of that, they salvaged some of their pride after losing by 42 points in their last game, an embarrassing 111-69 setback at Chicago on Wednesday night.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he didn’t have any inspirational pre-game speeches.

I'm not that smart,'' Popovich said. These guys are real pros. They’re a great group of guys. They play hard every night. In Chicago, we played a team that was just much better than we were.‘’

The fleet, 6-foot-4 Maxwell played small forward in place of Monty Williams, who strained his groin in practice Thursday. Williams is listed as doubtful for tonight.

Earlier, Williams replaced the injured Dominique Wilkins, who had replaced the injured Sean Elliott.

All told, the Spurs didn’t have a natural small forward available against Toronto (20-40). They had a season-high seven players out with injuries. And injuries weren’t their only problem. Going into the game at Skydome in front of 16,178, Maxwell once again was fighting off-court problems.

There is a warrant out for his arrest in his hometown of Gainesville, Fla., with authorities alleging that he owes an unspecified sum in child support payments. A spokesman in the Alachua County Sheriff’s Department said Maxwell could be apprehended if he doesn’t answer the charges.

I don't want to talk about it,'' Maxwell said. It’s not true. I wasn’t even thinking about that.‘’

Maxwell was too busy torching Walt Williams and others who tried to guard him. Maxwell made Williams look like a statue on a few occasions, bolting past him on drives to the hoop. He hit 9 of 20 shots from the field and 13 of 13 at the line.

``I felt it was real important for me to concentrate at the line and knock ‘em down,’’ said Maxwell, who played for the third straight game after missing the previous seven with anemia.

It was a wild finish at the end, with Del Negro figuring prominently into the dramatics. Trailing by eight with a little more than two minutes remaining, the Raptors started getting steals off their press and fought their way into a tie.

But the Spurs called time out with 49.4 seconds remaining, and made an adjustment.

They organized a play on their inbounds pass against the press that worked twice down the stretch. Consequently, they fought off the Raptors, who had beaten them by 33 two weeks ago in San Antonio.

We drew it up a different way in the huddle and we got 'em off kilter,'' Popovich said. We got Vernon right to the rim.‘’

Instead of the standard inbounds, the Spurs ran Del Negro back behind the baseline. Carl Herrera passed down the line to Del Negro, who kicked it out to Avery Johnson into the open court.

It worked twice in the final, frantic minute.

Once, Maxwell turned the play into a breakaway layup off a nice feed from Johnson. Later, he hit a pair of crucial free throws with 11.1 seconds left to give the Spurs a 106-101 cushion.

Damon Stoudamire (25 points, seven assists) responded with a pair of free throws with to bring the Raptors within three.

Subsequently, Del Negro went to the line with 5.4 seconds remaining, looking to put the game away. The Spurs’ best free-throw shooter missed both, giving the Raptors a chance to tie. Stoudamire raced upcourt, but Del Negro charged back and knocked the ball from his grasp.

By the time Stoudamire regained possession, his desperation trey was hoisted too late, after the buzzer.

Most players would stand there and sulk for a few seconds after they missed those free throws,'' Popovich said. But Vinny had the presence to wipe that out of his head and get back on defense. That’s an amazing play.‘’

Del Negro scored 17 for the game, including six in the final 2:19.

Guard Cory Alexander tied a career-high with 18 points off the bench, including a stretch at the end of the third and the start of the fourth when he traded baskets in a shootout with Stoudamire.

Alexander, 6 for 19 from the field in his past three games, hit 6 of 8 shots against the Raptors, including 3 of 4 on three-pointers. Center Greg Anderson also had his best game in weeks, producing 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Del Negro said it felt good to win again, even though the Spurs are probably headed for the lottery.

After what we've been through, it's fun to get a win,'' he said. We haven’t had that feeling for awhile. On the inbounds play, we worked on it some yesterday in practice and we ran it real well.‘’

SPURS NOTES

- No harm done: The Spurs were ready to see what forward Charles Smith could do in one-on-one drills. Smith, rehabilitating his arthritic right knee, wasn’t ready. As a result, the Spurs’ strength and conditioning coach walked off the floor, obviously miffed.

It happened after practice in Toronto on Thursday. By Friday, Smith said he and Mike Brungardt, the team’s strength coach, who is overseeing Smith’s workouts, had patched up their differences.

We talked about it,'' Smith said. It’s been resolved.‘’

Brungardt said it was ``between Charles and I and the team. It’s really no one else’s business.‘’

Smith, out since November with the knee problem, said the Spurs wanted him to practice against Cadillac Anderson and Jamie Feick to test his knee.

I just felt that it wasn't going to work,'' he said. With something like that, you have to go into it with the mindset that you are ready.‘’

There has been no timetable set for Smith’s return. Smith has been increasing the length and intensity of his workouts during the 10-day road trip, which concludes tonight in Indiana. - Jerry Briggs

Rodman never hurt like injuries

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich joked with reporters after the team’s astonishing 42-point loss to Chicago on Wednesday night, saying he wished Dennis Rodman - his flamboyant former power forward and antagonist - would have been able to play. ``I’m sure we would have communicated in one way, shape or form,‘’ Popovich said, smiling.

The Bulls’ bad boy was not on hand, suspended one game by the NBA for striking Milwaukee’s Joe Wolf in the groin with a fist a few nights earlier. It was his third suspension of the season.

Popovich knows how the Bulls feel. Rodman drove Spurs coaches and players to the brink of despair a few times two seasons ago.

Only now, Popovich can make light of the subject. ``I’m sure I’ll have a message on my answering machine from him about going to dinner tonight,‘’ he said with a straight face.

Yes, and the tooth fairy lives. Or, maybe, the Bulls’ 111-69 victory was a mirage.

Rodman made Popovich’s life miserable for a year. In the l994-95 season, Popovich’s first as executive vice president for basketball operations with the Spurs, Rodman won a league rebounding title and provided a strong defensive presence.

He was a force who helped lead the team to the Western Conference finals. In that respect, Popovich loved him. But he hated Rodman’s constant harping about wanting more money and all the rebellious behavior the contract impasse spawned.

Popovich, in response, traded Rodman to the Bulls in the fall of 1995 for Will Perdue.

Two years later, Rodman has won an NBA title with the Bulls and is bearing down on another. But he is still causing trouble. Michael Jordan and the Bulls, simply, are sick of him.

``My opinion on him is worthless,‘’ Popovich finally said, trying to fend off questions about the tattooed cross-dresser, who currently graces the cover of a national magazine in a frilly women’s bathing suit.

But how does Popovich compare the Rodman heartbreak and headache to the Spurs’ current injury-induced nightmare?

That doesn't have anything to do with what we are doing now,'' Popovich said. It’s not even analagous. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.‘’

It may be only a guess. But we suspect Popovich would rather have five more seasons like his first one with Rodman, rather than another one like this year. Maxwell’s dilemma: Vernon Maxwell hasn’t quite reached Rodman’s status as a Spurs problem child.

But he is gaining ground fast. In the last few weeks, Max has been ordered by a Houston judge to pay $592,000 to a woman for exposing her to herpes and also has been ordered to pay child support or face arrest by authorities in Alachua County, Fla.

A sheriff’s department spokesman in Alachua County said Maxwell could even be arrested outside of Florida state lines if he fails to report to child-support enforcement staffers.

Maxwell has denied both allegations. You only hope the Spurs are treating these cases seriously. If they don’t order Maxwell to call Florida to straighten out the latest matter, they’re asking for more pain.

Spurs end trip on high note

INDIANAPOLIS - The star players are all injured in the midst of the Spurs’ worst season in eight years. But the pride remains intact, as evidenced by a remarkable turnaround from a 42-point blowout loss at Chicago on Wednesday.

The Spurs won their second straight game since the Chicago debacle, holding off the Indiana Pacers 102-98 Saturday night at Market Square Arena.

With the victory, they finished their longest road trip of the season with a respectable 2-4 record.

We didn't talk about it, but that Chicago game was embarrassing,'' Spurs point guard Avery Johnson said. That game was on national television and everything. We had already had a disappointing season and then that game . . . it was just embarrassing.‘’

Johnson led the assault on the befuddled Pacers with a season-high 26 points and nine assists.

We do have a lot of pride on this team,'' he said, from the coaches on down to the players.‘’

Guard Vinny Del Negro added 22 points and resurgent forward Carl Herrera produced 21 to help the Spurs put a stop to a streak that at one point reached a crisis proportion - 26 losses in 30 games.

Since then, they’ve beaten the Toronto Raptors and the Pacers (29- 32) on consecutive nights. Toronto is a team going nowhere, except to join the Spurs (15-46) in the lottery. But the Pacers had hopes for the playoffs before they lost three in a row this week.

``It was great to get a win against a good team like Indiana,‘’ Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Popovich won’t apologize for winning. But he is close friends with Pacers coach Larry Brown, whose team took a serious blow in its quest to chase down the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

You're never going to give a win away because you feel bad for someone,'' said Popovich, hired into the NBA and onto the Spurs' coaching staff when Brown became head coach of the Spurs in 1988. But I hope it doesn’t have a negative effect on their run for the playoffs.‘’

Popovich hailed the game as a ``great victory’’ for the Spurs, who had lost seven in a row going into Toronto.

It's great to get two in a row on this road trip,'' Popovich said. Avery did a great job as a leader tonight, and Vinny (Del Negro) hit some big shots. They all did a great job.‘’

Most of the 16,621 fans grumbled to the bitter end about the officiating and the rough treatment in the post of Pacers center Rik Smits. Smits was banged around by Cadillac Anderson, Carl Herrera and Jamie Feick all night.

But Spurs fans who watched the game on television back home probably had little sympathy, considering their team entered the game with seven injured players. For the second night in a row, the minimum eight suited up.

I am really happy for this group of guys,'' Popovich said. They are a special group. The way they have stepped up their physicality and their desire to be consistent in that effort is a tribute to them.‘’

It was the first time the Spurs had won as many as two games in a row since they beat Vancouver, Utah and Denver in succession on Jan. 2 and 3.

Two in a row is a big thing with us now,'' said Johnson, who played on 62- and 59-game winners with the Spurs the past two seasons. At one time around here you tried to win 10 or 12 (straight). The main thing is we like the way we’re doing it. We had no energy against the Bulls. But the last two games we had more. We have been much more aggressive.‘’

Smits led the Pacers with 25 points and guard Reggie Miller scored 21.

“如果M.L.卡尔(M.L.

Duncan derby: Spurs-Celtics loser could be winner

What’s that you say? That woeful Boston team also is licking its chops over the possibility of landing top collegian Tim Duncan? Come to think of it, there’s a Spurs-Celtics game coming up Friday night at the Alamodome that could be a title clash of sorts.

Many years ago, the Spurs whipped the Celtics pretty regularly. Then Larry Bird showed up and the Celtics started whipping the Spurs.

In the long run, who does the whipping Friday may not matter as much as who absorbs it.

One thing’s certain. Both these teams usually play hard. But the loser could ultimately be the winner.

Detroit coach Doug Collins knows what this coming draft could mean to his Eastern Conference rival.

You're looking at the first pick in the draft, which will be Duncan, then the pick Boston's getting from Dallas,'' Collins said. Add that to this young group, with Dino Radja coming back healthy, and all of a sudden, Boston could be a team that makes one of the biggest jumps in the league.‘’

You can bet that if Boston doesn’t wind up with the worst record, but still gets the right ping-pong ball, the howls of fix and back- room maneuvering will be heard coast to coast - just like when the Knicks got Patrick Ewing in 1985.

``The league just needs the Celtics back,‘’ the paranoid and distrustful will insist.

Boston sure made a jump when it picked Bird at No. 6 in '78, then nabbed Kevin McHale at No. 3 in '80. The Spurs made their return to respectability when they snagged David Robinson No. 1 in '87 and Sean Elliott No. 3 in '89.

It would be a shame if M.L. Carr isn't retained as coach,'' Collins said. He had to go through the losing - and he did it with class. Now he should have a chance to do some winning.‘’

Is there a message in there? Is somebody thinking that Gregg Popovich had to go through the losing, so now he should go through some winning? Is Popovich thinking along those lines? Different directions: The Houston Rockets managed to locate and sign veterans Sedale Threatt and Eddie Johnson to maybe provide a little emergency bench help down the stretch.

To shore up their lineup, the Spurs signed Joe Courtney. Who’s best? Recently retired Cavaliers center Brad Daugherty says John Stockton and Karl Malone are not the best pick-and-roll tandem. He tends to prefer his act with Mark Price.

Mark and I were better, no doubt about it,'' Daugherty said. Mark was a better shooter than John. I could finish the shot, Malone can finish the shot, but Mark was a weapon in himself.

``That’s simply because if my man, the big guy, was too lazy, he paid for it. John will look for other people more and he passes the ball a little better than Mark.‘’ Some motivation: New York coach Jeff Van Gundy inadvertently motivated Michael Jordan into a 51-point performance and a Chicago victory the last time the teams met.

Van Gundy maintained the Bulls’ star ``conned’’ young players into a false sense of security by pretending personal interest.

Van Gundy sort of implies he goofed back then, but now tries to explain why.

I finally admitted to myself the other day that I am absolutely obsessed by them,'' he said. I think about Chicago every day. I admire them so much and the standard they set for this league. I want this team to get to that level.‘’

So Van Gundy admits it probably wasn’t wise to say what he did and he also regrets taking digs at Bulls coach Phil Jackson, like calling him ``Big Chief Triangle.‘’ Worm bucks: Everything about Dennis Rodman is a little strange.

Now when he loses a game’s pay to suspension, it’s calculated at $65,000 instead of the original $109,756. That’s because Rodman’s contract, $9 million for one year, has clauses that reduce that amount when he misses games because of suspension.

Jordan’s even saying nice things about former teammate Horace Grant, who frequently ripped Jordan behind his back and once labeled His Airness as being divisive to the team.

Every team should have such a divider.

Certainly, Dennis gets the edge in rebounding,'' Jordan said. But Horace had the rebounding, the defense and offense - and the mental aspect. You could count on him every night. You know he’s not going to go off.‘’

Spurs flexing new muscles - Wins attributed to physical play

The warriors, the few but apparently surprisingly mighty, have returned. The Spurs are back in San Antonio, home from the road journey that started as a march to disaster and ended in a step to triumph.

San Antonio defeated the Toronto Raptors and the Indiana Pacers Friday and Saturday night despite dressing just eight players.

Coach Gregg Popovich says the team is developing the needed core of physicality and mental toughness.

``The two wins were a testament to the fact that this group will lay it on the line and play hard and is getting to the personality of overall mental toughness,‘’ Popovich said during the team’s day off Sunday.

We're getting great individual development from Vinny (Del Negro), Carl (Herrera) and Monty (Williams),'' the coach said. The leadership of Avery Johnson shows that he is positive and he is a professional.‘’

Herrera scored 21 points against Indiana and generally is showing a willingness to mix it up in the paint. Del Negro had 22 points against the Pacers. Johnson tore up Indiana with nine assists and a game-high 26 points.

Most impressive was the overall banging of the oft-considered soft Spurs, a physical show that had Pacers fans grumbling about the lack of whistles to call a halt on the roughing up of Indiana center Rik Smits.

Popovich relieved Bob Hill of his duties Dec. 15, noting then that he wanted to change the defensive attitude of the team.

The players' physicality has increased geometrically,'' Popovich said. They understand what that can do for them. It (improvement) wouldn’t have happened unless they accepted it.

It was an overall effort by the coaches and players,'' Popovich said. It was obvious that we had to do it and we just did it.‘’

The Spurs have had a rigorous and effective rotating defense the past couple of seasons but it has been spiced with more body popping.

We've been a good defensive team in the past but Pop just wants to add the physical aspect, especially with our post defense,'' Johnson said. We’re trying to make contact more. Before, we relied more on athletic ability.

``The rotations are necessary but we want to add more of a presence,‘’ the guard said.

The Spurs should have a little more help when they take on the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night at the Alamodome. Both Monty Williams and Will Perdue are listed as probable.

Spurs’ roster swells - and shrinks - Some players return to face Rockets

There was a surprising and certainly unusual sight at the University of the Incarnate Word on Monday morning. There were the Spurs at the McDermott Center - practicing five-on- five. Ten reasonably healthy bodies engaged in full-court and half- court workouts.

Wow, I don't remember the last time we had five-on-five except during games,'' the Spurs' Vinny Del Negro said. It was good. We had a good workout.‘’

David Robinson and Sean Elliott watched from the sidelines, but Vernon Maxwell was absent. Maxwell has been suspended for one game for his on-the-floor conduct in handling hecklers during Saturday’s victory over Indianapolis.

Otherwise, the Spurs should have a fairly large contingent of players available when they take on the Houston Rockets at 7 tonight at the Alamodome.

San Antonio’s Dominique Wilkins, Will Perdue and Monty Williams all are listed as probable.

The Spurs have had 10 or more players suited up only four times in their last 20 games, the last coming March 5 in Chicago. Before that, you have to go back to Feb. 11 at Dallas.

We'll give it a go,'' said Wilkins, who has missed the last five games with a pulled hamstring. The guys all are feeling pretty confident now and we have a little momentum.‘’

Wilkins was referring to the team’s surprising victories over Toronto and Indiana, when only eight players suited up.

It feels a lot better, not 100 percent but good enough to go,'' Perdue said of his strained left hamstring. I couldn’t go Friday (against Toronto), but I did want to play Saturday (against Indiana).‘’

Perdue even joked about whether or not the Spurs really needed him to return.

The team beat the Raptors (without me), so that doesn't do a lot for the ol' psyche,'' he said. Then I wasn’t out there and they beat Indiana. I told the guys I was going to come back and mess up what they had going on the floor.

``But then I’m glad I didn’t try to play and find out I couldn’t because the last thing I want to do is give Pop (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) the satisfaction of saying `I told you so,’ ‘’

The Rockets have won five straight and will be without injured stars Clyde Drexler and Charles Barkley.

Oh, that's too bad,'' said Del Negro, grinning. We’re going to have more weapons now. We’re expecting an exciting game and a nice crowd at the dome.‘’

Despite the injury-plagued season, Popovich said the players remain upbeat.

They are great to be around,'' Popovich said. We had a gruesome (six-game) road trip that would have been tough in the best of conditions.‘’

Popovich also said the team still believes it has what it takes to win some more games.

The Rockets are going to be ready to get after it,'' he said. But our guys want to win games. We’re not into losing games. We’re not built like that. We’re not into losing games to get (lottery) picks.

``We’re just going to concentrate on playing and let the chips fall where they may, whether it be the playoffs or the lottery.‘’

-Spurs notes: Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said David Robinson will have his left foot X-rayed Friday.

Robinson had surgery to repair a fracture on his left fifth metatarsal. Popovich has said Robinson’s return to the lineup will be determined by his health and that it likely will be later, rather than sooner.

-Charles Smith practiced with the team Monday.

He may come off the injured list if he does well,'' Popovich said. We want to see him during a few more practices before we make any decisions.‘’

Smith has played only four games this season, having been forced to the sideline with osteoarthritis of the right knee.

There's no timetable,'' Smith said. It’s coming along. Pop wants to get some full practices in. I’m just waiting for them to give me the OK.‘’

-Popovich said the team is trying to schedule an appointment for Chuck Person with the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Inglewood, Ca.

``It will probably be at the end of this week or the beginning of next week,‘’ Popovich said.

Person is recovering from back surgery and is looking for the OK to return to basketball activities.

Maxwell to sit for court behavior

The troubles of Vernon Maxwell continue. The Spurs have suspended Maxwell for one game without pay for his rude conduct in handling hecklers during the game against the Pacers on Saturday night in Indianapolis. He will miss tonight’s game against the Houston Rockets at the Alamodome.

``We have suspended Vernon Maxwell for one game without pay for his conduct on the court during Saturday night’s Spurs-Pacers game. His conduct did not coincide with the standards we have set for this basketball team,‘’ Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a news release.

Popovich said Maxwell used inappropriate gestures and body language toward heckling fans at Market Square Arena. The coach said the action was not appropriate ``for a member of the Spurs’ team.‘’

Popovich was visibly upset with Maxwell - red-faced and yelling at the guard - during one timeout in the fourth quarter.

Maxwell was suspended for 10 games during the 1994-95 season for getting involved in an altercation with a fan in Portland.

Maxwell’s contract reportedly called for a guaranteed $500,000, plus $250,000 if he was on the roster after training camp. It will include another $250,000 if he remains on the roster at the end of the season.

Figured on the $750,000 amount, the suspension will cost Maxwell about $9,146.

Maxwell has experienced a troublesome past month.

A Houston judge has ordered Maxwell to pay $592,000 for exposing a woman to the herpes virus. He has denied even knowing the woman.

Last week, it was learned the Sheriff’s Department of Alachua County in Florida had issued an arrest warrant Feb. 7 for Maxwell’s failure to pay child support. Maxwell would have been arrested if he had traveled to Florida for the team’s road games against Orlando and Miami.

The sheriff’s department has since said that authorities might pursue Maxwell out of state to make him comply with the court- ordered, child-support payments.

Maxwell contends he has made all his child-support payments.

Spurs’ future: Why Popovich will be back

Gregg Popovich will coach next year. Sam Schuler will move up to become a quasi-GM. That’s not official. That’s logical and economical. And thus probable.

Popovich has made no such announcement to anyone. Even those closest to him say he’s stuck with the same dilemma he’s felt for three years. His mind says stay in the front office. His heart says coach.

But what about the other part of his body - the part that Bob Hill-lovers want to boot? This is less of a factor than people think.

Peter Holt told TV last week the decision on what Popovich does next year is up to Popovich. Contacted Monday, Holt said the same.

Holt and Jack Diller are fully aware of the anger over the Hill firing. Still, they wonder how many tickets a coach sells, especially for a team that will have a healthy David Robinson and a lottery pick. And they wonder if they purged Popovich, would it make much difference?

Maybe if they spent $4 million a year on Rick Pitino. Or $3 million on George Karl.

But this organization is in no position to pay a coach more than the point guard. Popovich got a bump in salary when he took over for Hill, and he’ll sign a better deal this summer. But his money will still be below the league average.

Then there is Schuler. He would also get a bump to move up from director of personnel. But he would not only come cheaper, he would also come with the organizational skills and ego-less style necessary for this role.

Schuler has already assumed some of Popovich’s general manager duties, even as he prepares for a critical draft decision. But in an expanded position - attending to details and protecting Popovich’s back -Schuler would free up Popovich while still working within Popovich’s parameters.

Is this an econo-partnership? Perhaps. But with Robinson turning 31, it might be the very continuity that gives the franchise its best chance at winning. Pitino might tear it up. Karl might blow it up.

This is undeniable: Neither knows these Spurs. For better or worse, this is Popovich’s team. Those he didn’t trade for, he knew when he was an assistant.

Would Doc Rivers offer the same knowledge? Rivers might not want the job. He earns about $450,000 with TNT. But if he did coach, he would be a rookie learning on the job. Popovich, more than likely, would coach through Rivers. So why not cut out the middle man?

There are benefits to Popovich as both the coach and front-office power, and Monday offered one. Then Popovich suspended Vernon Maxwell for flashing an obscene gesture at a fan during the Pacers game.

Popovich got in Maxwell’s face as few can. Popovich has known Maxwell since 1988. But knowing this is just one of a series of incidents with Maxwell this season - some of which the Spurs have kept quiet - Popovich wants to find out now if Maxwell is worth bringing back next season. At least Maxwell knows who he has to convince.

Even those who embraced Hill have to be impressed with the latest road trip. Humiliated in Chicago and heading to the lottery, The Great Eight won back-to-back road games. For that, USA Today named the Spurs ``the team of the week’’ in Monday’s editions.

Hakeem Olajuwon could do another Chicago on them tonight. But Popovich has these guys playing hard and together. A guess: Having connected with his players, Popovich is more ready than ever to listen to his heart. Having endured the losses, won’t he want to see how winning feels?

So get ready for the future. It’s the same as the present.

Spurs can’t restrain Rockets - Even without Charles, Clyde, Houston too much for S.A.

Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich was a little worried before Tuesday night’s game. So was Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. Tomjanovich was concerned that the return of three players -Will Perdue, Monty Williams and Dominique Wilkins - would give the Spurs a big lift. Popovich was concerned that the return of that trio would throw off the Spurs’ timing.

But it was Tomjanovich who left the Alamodome worry free after Kevin Willis scored 19 points to help Houston dust off the Spurs 103- 79 for its sixth straight victory.

We committed the cardinal sin,'' Popovich said. We let a team get a big run on us. We are not built to come back from that.‘’

There were plenty of lesser sins as well.

The Spurs, led by Williams’ 19 points, committed nine turnovers in the first half. The Rockets turned those into 18 points.

The Spurs hit just 38 percent from the field in the second period, 40 in the third.

The Spurs permitted the Rockets to shoot 61 percent in the first, 58 in the second.

With the new guys in the game, it's a new basketball team again,'' Popovich said. They have to learn each other’s timing on offense and defense again.‘’

The Rockets, who completed their recent road trip 5-0 without injured All-Stars Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler, weren’t expected to put this kind of pounding on a Spurs team that had played Houston tough this season.

Hakeem Olajuwon played only 28 minutes and didn’t appear that interested through several stretches.

He didn't break a sweat,'' said Popovich of Olajuwon. He did what he had to do.‘’

The Rockets’ center put some sweet moves on the Spurs, leaving Greg Anderson lunging at empty space a few times. But Olajuwon also badly bricked a couple of jumpers off the side of the backboard.

This is an intense rivalry,'' said Olajuwon, who scored 17 points. I love it. Hopefully, they will get David Robinson back and will be a lot better team.‘’

The Spurs looked to be in pretty good shape when they wiped out an 18-10 deficit and went on to take a 32-28 advantage early in the second period.

But after putting Olajuwon back in the game, the Rockets outscored the Spurs 27-10 over the next nine minutes to fashion a 55-42 halftime lead.

Houston, though playing as poorly as San Antonio during a third quarter of ugly basketball, pushed its lead to 20 points in third period and led 76-59 going into the fourth.

Sam Mack started the fourth-quarter scoring with a three-pointer that gave Houston a 79-59 lead. The Spurs scored the next three points, but Mack hit another three to push the Rockets back to an 82- 62 lead with 9:15 left.

The loss snapped the Spurs’ two-game win streak.

We addressed the defense on this road trip,'' Tomjanovich said. We did not have much of a margin of error, so we just had to be more careful.‘’

The Spurs allowed the Rockets to widen that margin considerably.

``It was frustrating. I could see it in the guys’ eyes,‘’ said Perdue, clearly frustrated after having watched from the bench as the Spurs beat the Raptors and Pacers on the road.

``We kind of just collapsed after we got that lead in the second quarter. They extended their advantage in the third period, instead of us cutting into it. We only had one short run. The way we win is to just keep gradually building an advantage.‘’

Avery Johnson only had two assists to go with his 11 points on 4- of-11 shooting. Johnson agreed the changing combinations probably hurt the Spurs.

I've been playing with Vernon (Maxwell),'' Johnson said. (Tuesday) Monty (Williams) was back. Dominique (Wilkins) was back. That was one of the things.‘’

Maxwell did not play against the Rockets, having been suspended for one game by Popovich for making obscene gestures to hecklers during the Spurs’ victory at Indiana.

Williams showed his usual aggressive driving, but also mixed in a few jumpers.

I missed some defensive assignments (and) had four turnovers,'' Williams said. We made some bad decisions and got into a hole and never recovered.‘’

-Spurs notes: The team announced the waiving of forward Joe Courtney after Tuesday’s game.

Courtney signed a 10-day contract March 2 and appeared in five games.

He did a good job filling in for us, but he didn't get a chance to show all his skills,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Since we are getting a number of our players back, he will have less of a chance to play.‘’

Spurs, Smith sensing return against Celtics

The Spurs may spring a surprise on fans who thought forward Charles Smith was finished as a player. Gregg Popovich, the team’s coach and vice president of basketball operations, said there is a chance Smith will play for the first time in four months when the Spurs meet the Boston Celtics on Friday night at the Alamodome.

We'll see how he does (today) and then see how he feels after another practice (at the shootaround Friday),'' Popovich said. He’s getting better and better every day. He seems to be more and more confident.‘’

Popovich made the comments after practice Wednesday at the University of the Incarnate Word. Popovich also said guard Vernon Maxwell will play against Boston. Maxwell sat out Tuesday’s 103-79 loss to the Houston Rockets on a one-game suspension by the team.

The Spurs punished Maxwell for making ``inappropriate’’ gestures to heckling fans in Indianapolis’ Market Square Arena on Saturday night. Maxwell left Wednesday’s practice without speaking to reporters.

That's ancient history,'' Popovich said. That situation is over and done with.‘’

Many Spurs fans and observers thought Smith also was ancient history. He played the first four games this season before he had to sit down with osteoarthritis in his right knee.

Smith likes his chances of playing against Boston.

I'd say they are pretty good,'' Smith said. It’s not definite. We’ll have to see. When I do come back, it won’t be for 30 minutes a game or anything like that. It’s not like I’ll be playing all kinds of crazy minutes.‘’

The 6-foot-10 veteran, who has averaged 14.7 points during a nine- year NBA career, hasn’t played since Nov. 6 at Washington. He scored 32 points in four games before deciding he couldn’t continue without renewed rehabilitation on his knee.

Smith began light workouts with the team Feb. 25. He traveled on the Spurs’ recent 10-day road trip through the Eastern Conference, practicing on his own under the supervision of team strength coach Mike Brungardt.

On the trip, he increased the length and intensity of his drills daily, then worked out for the first time with his teammates Monday and again Wednesday.

Asked if Smith had felt any discomfort in the knee lately, Popovich said, ``So far, so good.‘’

Smith thinks he can deal with any pain or stiffness that might arise.

I feel pretty good,'' he said. I know I’m going to have to play with a certain amount of discomfort. But it’s manageable now. I can’t wait to get back out there. My only regret is that I couldn’t do this rehabilitation two years ago. I’m excited. I’m excited with the chance to play again.‘’

Since he left the lineup, Smith has cringed at talk that he would never play again. But he isn’t returning with an in-your-face attitude toward the skeptics.

A ton of people had written me off,'' he said. It’s a very hurtful feeling when you see how people treat you, like you’re gone. It was a great, great eye-opener for me. But I don’t want to say that, `I’m back. I told you so.’ It’s just personal satisfaction to be able to play out my career.‘’

As Smith prepares to make his return, there are those who might wonder how long he can take the nightly pounding on a knee that has little - if any - cartilage remaining.

Even Smith admitted he will be somewhat nervous.

I'll be a little tentative,'' he said. My timing is off. I don’t want to embarrass myself.‘’

Smith has resigned himself to the prospect that he likely won’t regain the athleticism that allowed him to average 20 points a game in two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers in 1989-90 and '90-91.

My knee is not going to get better,'' he said. I know I’m not going to grow any more cartilage. But it’s manageable.‘’

Neither the Spurs nor Smith discussed what would happen should he re-injure the knee. But under terms of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, the team could apply for off-season salary cap relief in the form of a disabled player exception.

If it’s ruled that Smith is out for the '97-98 season, the league would allow the Spurs to use half of his salary - or, approximately $1.75 million - to sign another player.

If the player is injured between Dec. 1 and June 30 and is determined to be out for the subsequent season,'' the league's agreement with the players association reads, the team has until the following Oct. 1 to use the exception.‘’

Spurs, Celts have Duncan on mind

- Lottery-bound duo eye top pick. Spurs forward Charles Smith complained of a pulled leg muscle and failed to finish a Thursday morning practice session, throwing into question his possible return to the Spurs’ lineup for tonight’s ``Tim Duncan Sweepstakes’’ at the Alamodome.

Gametime between the lottery-contending Spurs and Boston Celtics is 7:30.

In another sub-plot to the Spurs’ season-long soap opera of unthinkable misfortune, guard Vernon Maxwell expressed surprise that the team suspended him for his actions during a road game at Indiana last Saturday.

Maxwell, addressing the subject for the first time, admitted that he feels tension between himself and Spurs management leading into his return to the court tonight. He sat out Tuesday’s 103-79 loss to Houston, banished from the premises in the matchup against his former team.

The suspension hurt me more than anything,'' said Maxwell, embroiled in a few off-the-court brushes with legal authorities in the last few weeks. It hurt my reputation more than anything.‘’

But no matter what Spurs fans think of the beleaguered Maxwell and his tenuous relationship with Coach Gregg Popovich, and no matter when Smith is able to play again, the focus of attention for tonight’s game will be on a player who won’t even be in the building.

Duncan, the star center of Wake Forest, will be on everyone’s mind.

He is projected to be the top pick in the upcoming June draft, and the Celtics and Spurs are in line to get him. But the Spurs (15-47) need a loss and a continuing string of losses to improve their chances of winning the lottery, which determines the draft order among non-playoff teams.

The woeful Celtics (12-51) also need to keep losing to cement their position as the leader in the chase for Duncan, a 6-foot-10 scoring, rebounding and shot-blocking force.

Oddly enough, the last thing the Celtics or the Spurs need for their long-term future is a victory tonight.

Spurs players, in response to the talk, have grown sick of answering lottery questions the last few days. But Popovich has heard ``The Duncan Question’’ so many times, it doesn’t seem to bother him anymore.

We hear all kinds of things from the fans,'' Popovich said. If we win a game, some people love it, and some think we’re stupid. We can’t worry about opinions. I can tell you that we do not have a team that is going to go out and try to lose a game.‘’

The chances that Smith would make his return after a four-month stay on the injured list grew slimmer following a two-hour workout at the dome. Because Smith wasn’t able to complete the practice, Popovich held off on saying he would play.

He's a little sore,'' Popovich said. We decided to rest him (during the practice). We haven’t decided what game he will play. We’re still confident we’ll get him back on the court this month.‘’

Smith, out since Nov. 6 with osteoarthritis in his right knee, said he has been nursing a muscle pull for the last few days.

There's no need to push things,'' he said. The knee feels good. It’s a pulled muscle. I don’t want to rush anything.‘’

The team suspended Maxwell for making an obscene gesture to a fan at the Indiana game.

Maxwell said he meant no harm with the gesture, which he said he made in jest to a male fan who had been heckling him.

The fans talk to me,'' he said, and I talk back to the fans. This one guy, we were joking the whole game. He said, `Maxwell, you ain’t worth ****.’ That’s when it happened. It happened so fast. Nobody even saw it.‘’

Maxwell said he doesn’t want the incident to detract from the team down the stretch.

I don't have a problem with my employer,'' Maxwell said. I have a job to do. If he has any grudges against me, I don’t have any against him. I don’t know. But I do see a little tension between the two of us.‘’

The Celtics had lost five in a row and 18 of their last 19 going into a game at Dallas on Thursday night. The Spurs have lost 27 of their last 33. Playing in Boston on Jan. 8, the Celtics beat the Spurs by 24 points.

A few reasons why S.A. needs to keep the Spurs

A recent letter from James Anderson makes a valid point in asking for an explanation on a certain statement made here several times. As he put it, ``In regard to your oft-made statement, `San Antonio needs the Spurs more than the Spurs need San Antonio,’ you have never expanded on it. I don’t think I agree with it, but I’m only a spectator and taxpayer. I’m not as close to the action as you are.‘’

What a gentleman. Instead of writing what a rock head I am for taking a stupid stance, Anderson writes, ``I don’t think I agree with you.‘’

Well, perhaps that opinion does need an explanation.

It’s not enough to point out that for many years San Antonio was the largest city in America that did not have a single major-league sports franchise of any kind.

It’s not always wise to follow the deeds of the majority because very often the majority is wrong. A lot of elections often prove that.

However, I have come to accept as fact the old line that says a city that does not grow will eventually die.

If a big-league franchise in any sport is important to a large city then the Spurs are vital to San Antonio because it’s the only major-league game in town, and it’s almost certain that no other will join it or follow it in the next decade or so.

We’re not a rich city. Those on or near the poverty level outnumber the affluent folks. There aren’t enough well-to-do people here to support a Major League Baseball franchise with its 80 or so home games. We could and would support a National Football League team for eight to 10 home games each season, but we’re now a distant second in line for one of those franchises, far behind Houston.

With the Oilers leaving Houston, that area will be served first with a franchise, and once it is you can bet that the new owners won’t be pushing for any competition just a few hours across Highway 90.

Any city with a million or more residents but not a single big- league franchise is brushed off as a ``hick town’’ with little or nothing to do.

Big companies with jobs to offer give serious thought to such matters. It’s important that they keep key employees happy. Retama and the improved River Walk help but not enough for the real sports minded.

Right now two minor-league ice hockey teams and a minor-league baseball team help fill the void. But it’s the big-league Spurs - and only the Spurs - that attract national attention.

Our main industry is tourism, and although for many years our Chamber of Commerce spent gobs of time and cash working to sell San Antonio, it was George Gervin, David Robinson and all the other Spurs - past and present - who really made our presence known nationally.

From a personal viewpoint I liken the Spurs to our main library. Only a small percentage of our population uses the library, but I think we all might agree that we need it and it’s imperative that we keep it updated and in top condition.

Team owners seldom make much money, if any, while operating a franchise. But they pump their wallets high when they sell a franchise so the temptation always is there.

It’s an old argument that says, ``We’re a city of about a million, but only 25,000 or so go to the Spurs games. So why should we taxpayers build a new arena for them?‘’

My only reply to that is, we almost certainly will lose them if we don’t build that arena, and we need them more than they need us.

That takes us back to where we came in here today.

(Jerry Briggs)

Spurs latest to drop Celtic pride a notch - Alexander lifts team in Johnson’s absence

Spurs fans can talk about their chances of seeing Tim Duncan in a black and silver uniform after the regular season is over. For now, the talk around town is about second-year guard Cory Alexander, who started in the place of ill Avery Johnson and led the Spurs to a 103-92 victory Friday night over the Boston Celtics.

Johnson stayed home with a case of strep throat. Consequently, his streak of 378 straight games played, including a franchise-record 296 with the Spurs, came to an end.

Alexander played Johnson’s position at point guard and produced career highs of 22 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in front of 16,168 fans at the Alamodome.

When you get the opportunity to play, you have to make the most of it,'' Alexander said. AJ is our man, but you . . . always have to be prepared. (Friday), that preparation paid off and I was fortunate to play a good game.‘’

Pregame talk among some fans centered around the chase for the NBA’s No. 1 draft pick, which will probably be Duncan, a 6-foot-10 All-America center at Wake Forest.

Since neither the Celtics nor the Spurs are in the running for the playoffs, there are growing numbers of fans for both teams who wouldn’t mind seeing both teams continue to lose.

More losses would mean more chances of winning in the lottery, which determines the draft order for non-playoff teams, and the chance to grab Duncan.

It's not a topic of discussion,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. After the season ends, it will be. But not now.‘’

As it stands, the Celtics (12-53) have the best opportunity of any team in the league to win the lottery.

The Spurs (16-47) are still in serious contention for the No. 1 pick. But by winning three of their last four they may have reduced their chances of having Duncan play alongside David Robinson on the front line next season.

For now, Spurs fans will have to focus on Alexander and the current team, which has a game scheduled in at 8 tonight in Denver against the slumping Nuggets.

Cory obviously had a great game,'' Popovich said. He did a good job in a lot of respects.‘’

Alexander hit 7 of 16 shots from the field and 5 of 9 from three- point range. He said teammates talked to him during the course of the fourth quarter, telling him to try and get three more rebounds, which would have given him a triple-double.

The opportunity wasn't there,'' said Alexander, who made his first career start a memorable one. But if the minutes keep coming, I’ll get one. We hadn’t won at home in so long. That’s what really feels good about tonight.‘’

The Spurs had lost only three in a row at home, but their last win at the dome came Feb. 21 against Milwaukee. The Celtics, who shot 27 percent in the first half and 35 percent for the game, didn’t provide much opposition.

Nevertheless, Alexander said it still felt good. He said the team wanted to make amends for the 24-point loss to the Celtics in Boston on Jan. 8.

Anybody would be lying if they said they didn't remember that,'' Alexander said. We had a lot of games this year where we were beaten pretty bad, but everyone remembered that one.‘’

Dominique Wilkins also scored 22 points and Monty Williams added 20 for the Spurs, who came in with 27 losses in their last 33 games. Eric Williams paced Boston with 25 points, and Rick Fox scored 20.

San Antonio native David Wesley, in a matchup against Alexander, was held to 10.

Trailing by 21 points early in the third quarter, the Celtics picked up the pace. They gradually whittled the lead to single digits, then put on a rush at the end of the period with an 11-0 run in the final 1:02, drawing to within 73-70.

Boston reduced the margin to one early in the fourth period on a hook by Williams, but the Spurs braced themselves. They outscored the Celtics 12-2 over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Spurs were without Johnson, Vernon Maxwell and Charles Smith, all ruled out on game day.

Maxwell and Smith both have sore knees. Maxwell suffered a case of flared-up tendinitis, Popovich said. Smith has been out with osteoarthritis in his right knee since Nov. 6.

Neither Johnson nor Maxwell will not travel with the team to Denver, but Smith will make the trip.

We hope Charles will play sometime this month,'' Popovich said. We’ll take him to Denver and see what happens.‘’

Spurs Notes

- AJ ailing: Avery Johnson’s streak of 378 consecutive games played, the fifth longest in the NBA, came to an end Friday when he sat out against Boston with strep throat.

Johnson reported to the morning shootaround with 102-degree fever and a severe sore throat. He will not travel with the team to Denver.

Johnson had been the only Spur to start all of the team’s games this season. He became the 11th player to sit out with an injury or an illness.

During his streak, Johnson appeared in 296 consecutive games with the Spurs, as well as 82 in a row with the Golden State Warriors. His Spurs streak is a franchise record.

The last game he missed was Dec. 1, 1992, when San Antonio hosted Washington at HemisFair Arena. Johnson missed that game to be with his wife, who was giving birth to the couple’s first child that day. - Jerry Briggs

Del Negro shines in otherwise dim year

Guard Vinny Del Negro hates to see the Spurs trudge through the last quarter of the season without any realistic playoff hopes. He has played for too many winners here - teams that produced 49, 55, 62 and 59 victories, respectively - since he came aboard in the summer of 1992.

Del Negro has put in too much work to wake up, open the newspaper and be reminded that the Spurs are a month away from something very unsightly - like 22-60, or worse.

But if the Spurs are searching for silver linings to a season wrecked by injuries, they can look no further than Del Negro, his steady play and professional attitude.

It's been very difficult for everybody,'' he said. You just do the best you can. The main thing you have to do is respect the game . . . and try to understand the situation.‘’

The situation for the Spurs has been grim since center David Robinson reported to training camp with a bad back.

It also looked like it might be a bleak year for Del Negro individually when it became apparent Robinson would miss much of the season with injuries.

Del Negro and Robinson, for the past few years, have combined to give the Spurs a potent offensive weapon on pick-and-roll plays.

Without Robinson, the pick-and-roll hasn’t been nearly as successful this season. But fans who were waiting for Del Negro’s offensive production to drop off dramatically are still waiting.

Last season, he averaged a career-high 14.5 points and shot 49.7 percent from the field. This season, Del Negro took an average of 12 points on 46.8 percent shooting into Saturday night’s game at Denver.

Over the past month, he has been like a lighthouse in the fog, averaging 16.8 points and shooting 53.9 percent afield.

The main thing is, I'm playing a lot of minutes,'' said Del Negro, held back in November and December by a sprained knee, ankle and shoulder. Also, I’ve had some plays called for me, and that helps.‘’

What the coaches like the most about Del Negro this season is his expanded game. Offensively, he has turned into a threat when he runs off screens, catches and shoots.

Defensively, he has held his own despite limitations in speed and quickness.

Vinny has played really physical on defense,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. He has rebounded. He has been great.‘’

Fans also should take note of Del Negro’s attitude. He didn’t whine when coaches handed Vernon Maxwell the starting off-guard spot for about a month. He didn’t flinch when trade rumors surfaced at the Feb. 20 deadline.

Del Negro continued to play hard. Injured and tentative early in the season, his shot started to fall with regularity once he got healthy. Typically, he shrugged off his resurgence.

In the backdrop of a lost season for the team, he knows the expansion of his game isn’t going to make many headlines. As Del Negro said recently, ``I try not to look at the stat sheet this year.‘’

But it does make you wonder what kind of player he will be when Robinson returns. He’ll probably be the same old Vinny, returning next fall with a few more layers of confidence.

-Nashville rumblings: Spurs owner Peter Holt said he talked recently with an individual representing interests that want to lure an NBA team to Nashville.

He asked, `What are you going to do?' '' Holt said. I told him we wanted to keep the team in San Antonio and that we were focusing on the arena issue.‘’

Reportedly, Nashville interests would pay $25 million for a team to move with ownership intact. Holt, who declined to identify the individual, said no specific offer was discussed.

-Monty wants to stay: Forward Monty Williams revealed to Clifford Broyles, an Express-News sportswriter handling a story last week for the Associated Press, that he has an option year on his contract coming up.

Williams could decide at his option to become a free agent, but, as he said, ``My plans are to be with the Spurs. I like it here and my wife loves it here.‘’

Denver treys serve Spurs with defeat

DENVER - There’s still some gold in them thar Nuggets. Denver, struggling almost as badly as San Antonio this year, shined pretty brightly Saturday night, stomping the Spurs, 121-105, at McNichols Arena.

Denver quashed the old cliche that you don’t have to tune in an NBA game until the last two minutes. The Nuggets led by 13 after the first quarter and by as many as 28 in the second period.

The Spurs should have been terminal at halftime, but the Nuggets, particularly Dale Ellis, switched to a matador defense and San Antonio outscored Denver 10-2 in the final two minutes of the opening half.

But Antonio McDyess and LaPhonso Ellis fractured the Spurs’ defense in the first half, and wreaked more than enough havoc in the second to preserve the victory.

McDyess and LaPhonso were just too tough for us to handle,'' Coach Gregg Popovich said. We got ourselves into a monstrous hole. We played tougher in the second half, but just couldn’t get out of it.‘’

McDyess muscled Carl Herrera, and Ellis had his way with Monty Williams and then Dominique Wilkins.

McDyess was nuclear inside, backing down, spinning, powering up. He had 23 points at the end of the first two quarters. Ellis added a couple of turnarounds, but he was radar from outside, putting down five of seven three-pointers in the opening half alone.

The three-pointers would continue throughout the game - the Nuggets hit 15 of them, tying a Spurs franchise record - and would prove to be the final factor in the final period.

Ellis hit seven of 10 three-pointers and finished with 39 points, a career-high and most by a Spurs opponent this season.

The Spurs couldn’t cope at either end.

They got some shots, but bricked them or tapped them off the edges of the rims, threw up a couple of airballs and hit 38 percent in the decisive opening half.

The Nuggets led by as many as 25 with less than five minutes left in the third period. But they continued their general disinterest in defense, concentrating on sharpening their individual offensive moves and practicing long jumpers.

Vinny Del Negro took full advantage of Dale Ellis, skittering in and through the lane for his runners and pull-ups - he finished the game with 18 points, despite playing sick.

It feels terrible,'' Del Negro said in a raspy voice. I saw a couple of doctors today and got some antibiotics. I don’t know if it’s strep throat or not. But my lungs were burning and this high altitude didn’t help.‘’

The Spurs got as close as 15 in the third period and went into the final stanza trailing 91-74.

Denver’s general sloppiness continued and sent a shiver of worry through Coach Dick Motta, urging him to call a timeout when the Spurs climbed to within 10, 95-85, with still eight minutes left in the game.

San Antonio scored the next bucket, another Del Negro pull-up, but Denver surged again, this time to a 108-93 lead after an Ellis three- point play.

We got to within eight, but then they hit those three-pointers again and pulled away,'' Popovich said. Dale Ellis and Brooks Thompson hit two three-pointers during the dash to the 108-93 score. But, again tonight, we didn’t give up, we continued to play hard.‘’

The Spurs had six players in double-figures, Dominique Wilkins leading the way with 20. Wilkins gave the Nuggets a taste of what it would have been like trying to guard him in his prime.

And from now on, too,'' Wilkins said with a laugh. LaPhonso was tough. But anytime a guy gets that kind of confidence, when he starts hitting those jumpers with people in his face, it’s going to be rough, inside and outside.‘’

That was Herrera’s diagnosis of McDyess.

When McDyess is hitting everything, it really makes it difficult,'' said Herrera. You try to push him out and then he still hits the jumpers.‘’

Luck of the Irish? Just call him Tim Duncan

It looks as if the leprechauns have moved into the Fleet Center, new home of the Boston Celtics. The luck of the Irish is going to manifest itself in the appearance of Tim Duncan holding a Boston uniform come draft day in June.

The Celtics have a strong grip on the league’s second-worst won- lost record, which puts them in position to nab the No. 1 pick.

Vancouver will finish with the worst record, but league rules prohibit either Vancouver or Toronto from getting the top choice.

So, Boston should get more than enough ping-pong balls to ensure the arrival of Duncan and send the Spurs perusing the capabilities of players falling into choices from No. 3 on up.

Boston also has Dallas’ first-round pick, so the celebrations on draft day might rival those of St. Patrick’s in the Bay State capital.

-Miami Rice: Heat coach Pat Riley said he never wanted to let Glen Rice go to the Hornets in the trade for Alonzo Mourning.

``We fought like tooth and nail, right down to the wire to keep him,‘’ Riley said.

Rice concurred. ``I know how hard he tried to keep me,‘’ he said.

The deal Riley apparently wanted to make was for Billy Owens. But Hornets general manager Bob Bass has always admired Rice.

Glen has become a complete player,'' Riley noted. He is probably, next to Michael Jordan, outside of the big centers, one of the most efficient players in the league.‘’

-Goodbye, Sasha? Hornets center Vlade Divac said Yugoslavian Olympic teammate Sasha Danilovic may exercise his escape clause and return to Europe next season.

``If he still was with Miami, he would have stayed with Miami,‘’ Divac said of the Heat guard dealt last month to Dallas.

Sasha is no fool.

-Fair turnabout: The Celtics truly have learned what it’s like to be among the league’s downtrodden.

It was the Celtics and Larry Bird who used to pack 'em in in foreign arenas, making the home teams cringe when they heard the raucous cheers for the invaders.

Tuesday, Boston was on the receiving end when the Bulls came to town, and the cheering erupted long before the Celtics were introduced.

The Fleet Center was filled with Bulls fans, some dressed in Bulls clothing, a few with colored hair, many carrying homemade signs and everyone milling about the court during pre-game warmups.

This is exactly what used to happen to us when we played Bird and the Celtics,'' Michael Jordan said after the Bulls' 117-106 victory. I think it’s ironic that the shoe is on the other foot now.‘’

-Insult to injury: Jordan scored 32 points and thus passed fabled Celtic John Havlicek for sixth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

``It’s ironic that it happened here in Boston,‘’ Jordan said.

-Don’t bite the hand: Bulls assistant Jimmy Rodgers, a former Celtics head coach and assistant coach on Boston’s 1986 championship team, was asked which team - the current Bulls or the '86 Celtics - would win if they went head-to-head.

``At this point of my life, I’d have to say Chicago would win.‘’

-Popping Pippen: Scottie Pippen may be regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, but playing with Michael Jordan has its drawbacks.

The Knicks’ Larry Johnson, considered a soft grandma by those accustomed to watching Anthony Mason, called Scottie ``a bleeping bum . . . whose best play is giving the ball to No. 23.‘’

The Knicks won their last outing against the Bulls, but Pippen noted that Johnson played only 27 minutes and ``was not on the floor in the fourth quarter when the game was won.‘’

It should be fun if the Bulls and Knicks meet in the playoffs.

-Big Red: Several NBA coaches already have their eyes on the 7- foot-9 center for the North Korean national team.

Wake Forest assistant coach Russell Turner insists that Ri Myong Hun is more advanced than such tall timber as Chuck Nevitt, Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan. He’s great up close, has a fairly nice jumper and hit about 80 percent of his free throws during the Jones Cup Tournament in Taiwan last summer.

Hun’s attorney, Michael Coyne of Cleveland, said the Cavs have inquired about Hun. But, the giant might not be eligible for the NBA draft, considering U.S. economic sanctions against North Korea.

Spurs Notes

- Smith back in action: The Spurs activated Charles Smith on Saturday and the forward saw his first action since Nov. 6 against the Denver Nuggets.

Smith was placed on the injured list Dec. 18 with osteoarthritis of the right knee. The Spurs said he has now completed his rehab program.

I figure we'll start Charles out playing six to 12 minutes a game for awhile and see how he does,'' Coach Gregg Popovich said. He feels good about it, I feel good about it, so it’s time to go.‘’

Smith played five minutes but missed his only two shots.

- Still missing: Avery Johnson (strep throat and high fever) and Vernon Maxwell (quadriceps tendinitis) did not travel to Denver.

Popovich said both probably would be listed as questionable for the Washington game Monday night in the Alamodome.

- Questions about Max: The Spurs did not renew disciplinary measures against Vern Maxwell for the Boston game Friday night, Popovich said.

``He has tendinitis (in his knees),‘’ the coach said.

Popovich suspended Maxwell for the Houston game on Tuesday. He was disciplined for making an obscene gesture to a fan in Indianapolis on March 8.

Spurs don’t view Bullets as duds

Here comes yet another one. The Spurs seem stuck in the jungle of struggling, lottery-bound teams. Four of their last five opponents will not make the playoffs this season, unless the Indiana Pacers make an unexpected surge back through the ranks.

The Spurs won three of those four games. Nice victories, but in the backward world of the NBA lottery, they probably will prove costly come draft day. The Washington Bullets are next up, taking on the Spurs at 7:30 tonight at the Alamodome.

The Bullets were expected to challenge for the Atlantic Division title, but have floundered and now sit 4-1/2 games behind Cleveland, which is sitting in the eighth and final playoff slot in the East.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Saturday night that lottery positioning simply cannot be the team’s concern.

We play every game to win,'' Popovich said. That’s a ridiculous thought. Our team’s job is to go out and try to win basketball games and the chips will fall where they may.‘’

They fell every which way when the Denver Nuggets pounded the Spurs 121-105 at McNichols Sports Arena. Some Nuggets fans probably felt they landed the wrong way and some Spurs fans may have felt they landed the right way.

The loss left the Spurs at 16-48, three games worse than the Nuggets (19-45) and still holding onto the league’s third-worst record. Philadelphia (17-47) and New Jersey (19-44) also are in this tight grouping of struggling teams.

The Bullets present a strong force with (Chris) Webber, (Juwan) Howard, Rodney (Strickland) and Calbert Cheaney,'' Popovich said. They are talented and young, looking for good things to happen for them. They have some very athletic players and that’s always a problem for us.‘’

Webber may be ready to break out with a huge game. He received the first ejection of his career Saturday night and played only 13 minutes against the Jazz.

I didn't mention (Gheorghe) Muresan on purpose because he's too tall to be in the NBA,'' Popovich said with a laugh, referring to the Bullets' 7-foot-6 center. He has surprised everybody. He has carved out a niche for himself. He can score and defend and he could be our biggest problem.‘’

Strickland hasn’t been with the Spurs for five seasons. Any real anger he felt toward the franchise for letting him drift into free agency during the summer of 1992 has probably faded with time.

Still . . .

Rodney is a great competitor and he is the best at taking the ball to the hole,'' Popovich said. He probably is ready to do a heck of a job in San Antonio.‘’

Avery Johnson, suffering from strep throat, and Vernon Maxwell, aching with tendinitis in both knees, did not travel to Denver. Each is listed as questionable for tonight.

Vinny Del Negro was sick but played Saturday night. Del Negro said his throat was sore and his lungs burned during his activity on the floor.

Bullets do more than graze Spurs

So, what’s new? Not much, really. The Spurs took another hit but still scrapped pretty good before being worn down and obliterated.

The Washington Bullets did it this time, rolling over San Antonio 109-85 Monday night at the Alamodome.

Once again, the Spurs had a few too many big bodies to attend to on the front line - and once again the Spurs had too many bodies not dressed in uniform.

Chris Webber led the Bullets with 24 points, nine boards and three blocks. Webber had two three-pointers and 10 points to spark Washington’s take-charge, 21-4 run in the third period.

We got an offensive flow in the third,'' Webber said. We moved the ball very well and got some good shots.‘’

The Spurs played their first game without at least one of the preseason designated starters. Avery Johnson was in the hospital, having surgery on his throat. Vinny Del Negro was at home, nursing a cold.

Cory Alexander started again in Johnson’s spot at point guard and fared well enough, scoring 24 points, including six three-pointers. But Alexander also had four turnovers and experienced a little trouble with the Bullets’ trapping defense.

I had a lot of turnovers. We all did,'' said Alexander, who played 48 minutes for the second straight game. That helped them get their big lead. They used some traps to get the ball out of my hands. I got some good shots. Vernon (Maxwell) and Monty (Williams) got me the ball in some good spots.‘’

Williams found himself thrown into Del Negro’s shooting guard position and he struggled with seven turnovers and just six points.

The Spurs stayed within striking distance through the first two quarters. But the game effectively was over midway through the third period.

The Bullets came out with a fury after leading 55-50 at halftime. Then Webber launched the run that boosted the advantage to 76-54.

They got that big lead and, as I've said before, we're not built to overcome leads,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. If we go into a (scoring) drought, it makes it very difficult.‘’

The Spurs shot just 27 percent from the field in the third period. The Bullets were ablaze, hitting 72 percent.

They were hitting everything and we couldn't make a shot,'' said the Spurs' Dominique Wilkins. You just have nights when everything goes wrong. We didn’t adjust to their traps, even though they weren’t very strong.‘’

Popovich looked hard and saw some bright spots.

We played some physical and strong defense in the post and that's one of our goals,'' he said. All our big guys were fighting on the blocks.‘’

Washington’s Juwan Howard certainly had his problems down low. Howard was stripped, bottled up and forced into many bad shots. The Spurs’ Charles Smith smothered him a couple of times.

``I’ve always been able to contribute pretty good post defense,‘’ said Smith, who played in his second game since Nov. 6 after being sidelined with a knee ailment and logged 11 minutes.

The Bullets spent a nice portion of the third racing down the floor for easy layups after defensive stops and turnovers. The rush of points left the dome crowd of 16,178 quiet for the rest of the game.

Washington plugged up the middle with 7-foot-7 center Gheorghe Muresan. The Bullets’ gangling giant played only 21 minutes, but had 13 points and six rebounds.

``Trying to get around him is like trying to get around a tractor trailer in heavy traffic on a two-lane highway,‘’ said Spurs center Greg Anderson.

Spurs’ Johnson out at least three games

Spurs point guard Avery Johnson underwent minor throat surgery Monday morning and will miss at least the next three games.

Dr. James Atkins drained an abscess in Johnson’s throat. Johnson had been nursing a case of strep throat and high fever and missed games against Boston on Friday and Denver on Saturday.

Johnson, who had played in 378 straight games before the Boston miss, will remain in the hospital for the next two or three days and receive intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

Johnson will not travel when the Spurs depart today for a three- game trip against Phoenix, Sacramento and the Los Angeles Clippers. His status will be updated before the Cleveland game on March 25. - Glenn Rogers

Spurs’ Robinson speaks volumes by saying little

That David Robinson isn’t a Michael Jordan or a Magic Johnson has been an unrealistic lament of some Spurs fans through the years. Today, Spurs vice president/coach Gregg Popovich ought to breathe a sigh of relief because of that fact.

You’ll recall, Jordan and Johnson each had a huge hand in the removal of a coach early in their careers.

Jordan got Doug Collins fired in Chicago, and Johnson earned a great deal of bad press when he had Paul Westhead ousted in Los Angeles.

Now, given Robinson’s personality, it would be difficult to imagine him ever doing that.

However . . .

If you were watching KSAT-TV’s ``Instant Replay’’ on Sunday night, Robinson offered a ringing non-endorsement of Popovich when asked about him returning as head coach next season.

``I can’t say how Gregg is doing since I haven’t really played for him this year,‘’ Robinson said.

He did play six games for Popovich, who fired Bob Hill on Dec. 10, the day Robinson returned to the lineup for the first time this season. He had missed the opening 18 games of the season because of back problems.

That Hill should be fired under those circumstances, of course, was ludicrous.

Yet, in light of Robinson’s non-endorsement of Popovich as coach, it’s interesting to recall the player who balked the loudest about Hill’s firing:

David Maurice Robinson.

Robinson and Hill had grown close during the past two seasons.

Sunday night, Robinson talked about the job Hill had done.

Bob was always working,'' Robinson said. We were always prepared when Bob was coach.‘’

Robinson noted that Popovich couldn’t yet be judged as a coach because of the injuries to this season’s team.

Understand, though, the team being beset by injuries didn’t prevent Popovich from firing Hill.

Robinson suggested that Popovich couldn’t really be evaluated as coach until he was in a tight game situation with all his men in place.

Robinson, whose back still isn’t 100 percent, assuming it ever will be again, didn’t take the easy way out with regard to Popovich.

I understand that Robinson didn’t say anything critical of Popovich on the telecast.

But in eight years of being around the cerebral man from the Naval Academy, I have learned it is often what Robinson doesn’t say that is most profound.

Bottom line: Robinson is one man Popovich can’t control.

Spurs chairman of the board Peter Holt has repeatedly said that Popovich is doing a good job as coach. Holt has said Popovich will make the decision on which of the two jobs Popovich will keep next season.

In reality, Popovich being under contract through the 1998-99 season is the deciding factor here.

Simply, this franchise doesn’t have the money to pay off Popovich and hire someone else who’d make an impact as coach.

Sad, but true.

Still, if I were Holt, I’d get input from Robinson. You think the Bulls do anything major without talking to Jordan?

Robinson, whose contract runs through the 2000-01 season, holds the trump card.

And even this officer and gentleman may get weary enough of things around here to finally play it.
