Spurs turn in grisly performance
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The game between the Spurs and the Vancouver Grizzlies may have lacked superstars. It may have lacked marquee billing. But it more than made up for it with drama, as the Grizzlies pulled out a 96-91 victory Sunday night at the GM Place. With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 2-11. It was their first victory in five tries over the Spurs since they came into the league as an expansion team last season. The Spurs, meanwhile, fell to 2-10 on head coach Bob Hill’s 48th birthday.
Hill welcomed the return of small forward Sean Elliott to the lineup, but injured center David Robinson could only watch from the sidelines as his team lost its fifth in a row.
Robinson, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, is expected to be out another couple of weeks at least with a bad back. He hasn’t played a minute this season.
This is part of the NBA,'' Hill said.
The last few years, we didn’t have many injuries. This year, we’re decimated. You just have to take the good with the bad. We have David, Chuck Person and Charles Smith out right now. The residue from that has affected everyone.‘’
Rookie forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit four clutch free throws in the final minute to help the Grizzlies pull it out. He made two with 46 seconds left for a two-point Vancouver lead.
After Spurs forward Dominique Wilkins missed from 15 feet, Blue Edwards nailed a 15-footer from the right side to give Vancouver a four-point spread. Elliott hit one of two free-throw attempts with 10.6 seconds left, but Abdur-Rahim made two more freebies with 9.7 seconds showing to seal the win in front of 15,874 fans.
The rookie (Abdur-Rahim) showed a lot of composure,'' Hill said.
There was no hesitation when he shot those. He had great presence. He stepped up there like he was going to make them and he did.‘’
Abdur-Rahim scored 18 points, pulled down nine rebounds and passed for nine assists - all career bests - off the bench in his best outing of the year. Guard Anthony Peeler also paced the Grizzlies’ reserves with 17 points. Center Bryant Reeves scored 15 and Edwards 13.
George Lynch made a big basket earlier in the fourth quarter and Edwards' shot near the end was huge,'' Hill said.
We played good `D’ on that play. They were deep into the clock and he hit the shot.‘’
Wilkins had his fifth double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Elliott, who sat out the Spurs’ 96-86 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night with a sore right quadricep, contributed 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
Once again, poor shooting plagued the Spurs, who hit 39.5 percent from the field. They also turned it over 18 times in a slow-paced game. The turnovers hurt because the Grizzlies turned them into 28 points. The Spurs got only 12 points off 11 Vancouver turnovers.
In the second quarter, we got lackadaisical,'' Wilkins said.
We made some turnovers and we went from nine points up to eight or nine down in only a few minutes. That lull killed us.‘’
The Spurs closed to one point down with 6:30 remaining in the game when Wilkins nailed a pair of free throws.
But the Grizzlies responded with several big plays in a row. First, Lynch rebounded a miss, scored and drew a foul for a three- point play. Then, Reeves hit a couple of short turnaround jumpers over Cadillac Anderson.
Anthony Peeler buried a three-pointer from the top of the circle to give the Grizzlies an 88-83 lead with 3:42 left.
Stung by the turn of events, the Spurs answered with a spinning layup by Wilkins, a three-pointer by Vinny Del Negro and a long jumper by Vernon Maxwell to tie it at 90-90.
The Spurs, trailing by 13 late in the third period, retaliated with an 8-2 run in the final minute and closed to 75-68 going into the final quarter.
Del Negro finished the streak with a couple of driving layups, the last one at the buzzer.
SPURS NOTES
- Birthday boy: Spurs coach Bob Hill celebrated his 48th birthday Sunday. He said he heard about his team’s slow start from his sons, Cameron, a sophomore at Trinity University, and Chris, a senior at Clark High School. Both boys play for their respective basketball teams. Trinity is 2-0 and Clark is 6-0 and I'm 2-9,'' Hill said before tipoff against Vancouver.
I’m catching a lot of grief.‘’
- Dirty dozens: This is the third time in the last five seasons that the Spurs have been .500 or worse after their first dozen games.
In one of those seasons, the start cost the head coach his job. The Spurs stumbled out to a 5-7 record under Jerry Tarkanian, who was fired after 20 games at 9-11. The Spurs finished 49-33 under former coach John Lucas. - Jerry Briggs
