Spurs turn in grisly performance

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The game between the Spurs and the Vancouver Grizzlies may have lacked superstars. It may have lacked marquee billing. But it more than made up for it with drama, as the Grizzlies pulled out a 96-91 victory Sunday night at the GM Place. With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 2-11. It was their first victory in five tries over the Spurs since they came into the league as an expansion team last season. The Spurs, meanwhile, fell to 2-10 on head coach Bob Hill’s 48th birthday.

Hill welcomed the return of small forward Sean Elliott to the lineup, but injured center David Robinson could only watch from the sidelines as his team lost its fifth in a row.

Robinson, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, is expected to be out another couple of weeks at least with a bad back. He hasn’t played a minute this season.

This is part of the NBA,'' Hill said. The last few years, we didn’t have many injuries. This year, we’re decimated. You just have to take the good with the bad. We have David, Chuck Person and Charles Smith out right now. The residue from that has affected everyone.‘’

Rookie forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit four clutch free throws in the final minute to help the Grizzlies pull it out. He made two with 46 seconds left for a two-point Vancouver lead.

After Spurs forward Dominique Wilkins missed from 15 feet, Blue Edwards nailed a 15-footer from the right side to give Vancouver a four-point spread. Elliott hit one of two free-throw attempts with 10.6 seconds left, but Abdur-Rahim made two more freebies with 9.7 seconds showing to seal the win in front of 15,874 fans.

The rookie (Abdur-Rahim) showed a lot of composure,'' Hill said. There was no hesitation when he shot those. He had great presence. He stepped up there like he was going to make them and he did.‘’

Abdur-Rahim scored 18 points, pulled down nine rebounds and passed for nine assists - all career bests - off the bench in his best outing of the year. Guard Anthony Peeler also paced the Grizzlies’ reserves with 17 points. Center Bryant Reeves scored 15 and Edwards 13.

George Lynch made a big basket earlier in the fourth quarter and Edwards' shot near the end was huge,'' Hill said. We played good `D’ on that play. They were deep into the clock and he hit the shot.‘’

Wilkins had his fifth double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Elliott, who sat out the Spurs’ 96-86 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night with a sore right quadricep, contributed 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Once again, poor shooting plagued the Spurs, who hit 39.5 percent from the field. They also turned it over 18 times in a slow-paced game. The turnovers hurt because the Grizzlies turned them into 28 points. The Spurs got only 12 points off 11 Vancouver turnovers.

In the second quarter, we got lackadaisical,'' Wilkins said. We made some turnovers and we went from nine points up to eight or nine down in only a few minutes. That lull killed us.‘’

The Spurs closed to one point down with 6:30 remaining in the game when Wilkins nailed a pair of free throws.

But the Grizzlies responded with several big plays in a row. First, Lynch rebounded a miss, scored and drew a foul for a three- point play. Then, Reeves hit a couple of short turnaround jumpers over Cadillac Anderson.

Anthony Peeler buried a three-pointer from the top of the circle to give the Grizzlies an 88-83 lead with 3:42 left.

Stung by the turn of events, the Spurs answered with a spinning layup by Wilkins, a three-pointer by Vinny Del Negro and a long jumper by Vernon Maxwell to tie it at 90-90.

The Spurs, trailing by 13 late in the third period, retaliated with an 8-2 run in the final minute and closed to 75-68 going into the final quarter.

Del Negro finished the streak with a couple of driving layups, the last one at the buzzer.

SPURS NOTES

- Birthday boy: Spurs coach Bob Hill celebrated his 48th birthday Sunday. He said he heard about his team’s slow start from his sons, Cameron, a sophomore at Trinity University, and Chris, a senior at Clark High School. Both boys play for their respective basketball teams. Trinity is 2-0 and Clark is 6-0 and I'm 2-9,'' Hill said before tipoff against Vancouver. I’m catching a lot of grief.‘’

- Dirty dozens: This is the third time in the last five seasons that the Spurs have been .500 or worse after their first dozen games.

In one of those seasons, the start cost the head coach his job. The Spurs stumbled out to a 5-7 record under Jerry Tarkanian, who was fired after 20 games at 9-11. The Spurs finished 49-33 under former coach John Lucas. - Jerry Briggs

Spurs still optimistic they can bounce back

DALLAS - Nobody who stepped off the Spurs’ team bus on a windy, cold and gray Monday wanted to consider the potential long-range ramifications of the team’s woeful start. After all, the Spurs have enough problems on their minds now, namely their five-game losing streak and a matchup with the Dallas Mavericks tonight at 7:30 at Reunion Arena.

Dallas (3-9) enters with a two-game losing streak. San Antonio hasn’t lost here in five years, a stretch that includes 12 straight victories. But with a 2-10 record, the Spurs won’t have the same old swagger when they tip it off tonight.

On the eve of their first meeting with the Mavericks this season, a few of the players insisted that they aren’t worried about their ability to turn their season around.

Center David Robinson may be out another two to four weeks with his ailing back. But the players fully intend to scorch the rest of the league -just as they have the past two seasons - when Robinson returns. In no way, they said, are they letting themselves daydream about worst-case scenarios.

Still, some nagging questions persist. If Robinson doesn’t play up to standards when he returns, what then? If he returns and gets hurt again next spring, what about that? Has anyone outside of a few worrisome fans back home considered that this team is bad enough without Robinson that it could miss the playoffs?

``No, no way,‘’ Spurs point guard Avery Johnson said. But Johnson, a team co-captain, thought about the question for a few more moments and offered an opinion.

We're not thinking about it,'' he said. But maybe at the same time, you have to have some of that (fear) there to make you want to fight. That thought is not supposed to be there, because we’re a team that’s been on another level (in the past few seasons). But you have to consider it. Right now, whatever we have to have to motivate us, then that’s what we’ve got to use.‘’

The Mavericks will be the seventh non-playoff team from last season that the Spurs have faced in their injury-plagued start. San Antonio, which won 62 and 59 games, respectively, over the past two seasons, are 0-6 against those lottery-dwellers so far.

Center Will Perdue scoffed at the notion that a Spurs lottery belly-flop is a possibility.

It never crossed my mind,'' Perdue said. You’re talking about a team that won, what, 16 games in a month last March? We’re 2-10 right now, but we’re very capable of going 10-2 in our next 12.‘’

Perdue said positive thinking is what the team needs now. With all due respect to Johnson, he said he doesn’t think the players should dwell on what could happen to them if the injured Robinson, Charles Smith and Chuck Person don’t come around.

If we have to consider that to motivate us,'' he said, then we’re in big trouble.‘’

Spurs coach Bob Hill seemed mildly surprised by Johnson’s sentiments. Hill, for his part, said he wanted to keep the focus on the immediate task, which includes tonight’s game and another at home against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday.

It's way too early to think about the playoffs,'' he said. We have 70 games left. Obviously, the sooner we get healthy, the better. I would say that if we’re still struggling like this at the All-Star break, then it’s something to be concerned about.‘’

The Spurs took another pie in the face Sunday night when they dropped a 96-91 decision to the Vancouver Grizzlies. Vancouver (2-11) has won only 17 of 95 games in barely more than a season of its expansion existence.

Mavs aren’t cowed by Spurs -Even 32 points from Wilkins not enough to help S.A. win

DALLAS - Teams in a tailspin never seem to get many breaks in close games. Unfortunately for the Spurs, that theory proved to be true once again Tuesday night when they dropped a 105-101 decision to the Dallas Mavericks at Reunion Arena.

Despite a season-high, 32-point performance from 36-year-old Dominique Wilkins, nothing seemed to go right for the Spurs in the last few minutes.

Vernon Maxwell, enjoying his best shooting night in a week, missed a wide-open, three-pointer that would have given the Spurs the lead with about a minute remaining.

On the rebound, Dallas guard Derek Harper leaped parallel to the floor and snared the ball about a foot off the hardwood. The Mavericks, clinging to the possession, called time with 1:02 remaining.

They set up a play for forward Chris Gatling, who posted up and sank a short hook shot that gave the Mavs a four-point lead. But the Spurs, who have lost six in a row, weren’t dead yet.

Maxwell drove into the lane and drew heavy contact from the Mavs. There was no whistle. There was only silence, and it was deafening to the Spurs. The no-call led to two Jason Kidd free throws that effectively buried the visitors under a six-point deficit with 26 seconds left.

I just knew I was going to get the call,'' Maxwell said. Unfortunately, I didn’t. What can you say? I have to stand by it. All we can do now is move on.‘’

With the loss, the Spurs sank to 2-11 on the season. The losing streak is the longest since they dropped nine in a row at the end of the 1989 season. They will get a chance to break out of their funk at 7:30 tonight when they play the Portland Trail Blazers to start a four-game homestand.

The Mavericks (4-9), who had lost six of their last eight, took advantage of a Spurs team without injured David Robinson, Chuck Person and Charles Smith.

I thought we were great,'' Spurs coach Bob Hill said. We hung in there all night long. Our togetherness was a lot better tonight. We really moved the ball. We had some guys make some shots. But Gatling was a little too much for us to handle inside.‘’

Gatling led the Mavericks with 26 points. Forward George McCloud, starting for the injured Jamal Mashburn, added 22 and guard Jim Jackson produced 21. Kidd contributed 12 points and 10 assists.

We shot . . . wow . . . 56 percent?'' Mavericks coach Jim Cleamons asked. There were several times in the first half where I thought we had them on the ropes and they kept coming back. We just made too many turnovers.‘’

The Spurs appeared to be dead with more than four minutes left when Gatling scored in the low post to give the Mavs a 92-83 lead.

Almost three minutes later, the Spurs were right back in it when Wilkins nailed a three-pointer from the top of the circle. Suddenly, the Spurs trailed only 96-94 and the Mavs were on the run.

From there, the Mavs got the big basket from Gatling and hit seven of their last eight free throws to nail down their first home win over the Spurs since 1991.

About the only thing for the Spurs to cheer was a milestone by Wilkins, who moved into seventh place on the all-time, NBA scoring charts. Wilkins improved his 14-year total to 26,027. He surpassed former Denver Nuggets and Mavericks star Alex English, who scored 26,013 in 15 seasons.

Oddly enough, English finished his career with the Mavs in 1991 and was a part of the last Dallas team to beat the Spurs at Reunion.

Wilkins said he couldn’t really enjoy the milestone.

That's nice to hear,'' he said. But I sure would have liked to get this win and do it at home.‘’

Wilkins praised the Mavericks, who were coming off a disastrous road trip including losses at lowly New Jersey and Boston.

Tonight, they hit some huge shots,'' he said. We did, too. But we had too many missed opportunities. That kind of hurt us. We should have won that game.‘’ - - -

Spurs Notes

- To err is human: Turnovers killed the Spurs on the first two games of the road trip, which ended in losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Vancouver Grizzlies. In the two games combined, the opposition has scored 55 points off 40 Spurs turnovers. San Antonio, in turn, has forced only 29 errors leading to 40 points.

What made it even more frustrating, is that the Spurs outrebounded both the Lakers and the Grizzlies. Against Vancouver, they had a 47- 30 egde on the glass - their largest margin of the season - and still lost to one of the worst teams in the league.

- 'Nique of time: Forward Dominique Wilkins was averaging 20.7 points and 10.1 rebounds in his last seven games going into Tuesday night’s game against Dallas. Out of his 78 rebounds, 41 came off the offensive glass.

- Maxed out: Vernon Maxwell had a string of six double-figure scoring games snapped against Vancouver. Maxwell scored a season-low two points on 1-of-8 shooting.

- Schedule lightens up: The Spurs have played 13 games in 26 days to start the season. They will get a break in the near future, with only four games scheduled in the next 10 days, all at home. Portland plays at San Antonio tonight. - Jerry Briggs

New boss isn’t throwing in the towel - Holt understands team’s frustrations

One might say that this was not the perfect time for a man to buy huge chunks of the Spurs’ franchise. Peter Holt jumped into the NBA waters this year, purchasing 31.78 percent of the San Antonio team and replacing Robert McDermott as chairman of the board.

Holt has since watched David Robinson sit on the sidelines with a sore back, Chuck Person depart for at least three months for rehabilitation after back surgery and other starters miss games with various injuries.

The Spurs have won two games and lost 11 during the initial stretch under Holt.

``Sure, I’ve been disappointed, frustrated, but, no, I certainly haven’t had any second thoughts about buying into the franchise,‘’ Holt said.

Holt came into the Spurs picture realizing the vital importance of Robinson, but perhaps not quite understanding the so-dominant role he played in lifting the team to lofty status.

We always called him `The Franchise,' so, of course, I knew he was the key player,'' Holt said. But from what we’ve seen the last month, we have to appreciate him even more.

``Yes, I did think we would do better than we have without David. I think we’re all a little disappointed. But when we get really upset, we have to realize the team has had other injuries, as well.‘’

Will Perdue missed the first eight games with a broken thumb, forcing a change in the offense. Charles Smith has been sidelined with an aching knee after just four games. Vinny Del Negro missed two games. Sean Elliott has sat out one game.

The only starter who hasn't been affected by injury is Avery Johnson,'' Holt said. Other players, like Dominique Wilkins, Vernon Maxwell and Greg Anderson, have been forced into roles that weren’t designed for them when the season began. They’ve been playing a lot more minutes than expected.‘’

Holt said any team - even the Chicago Bulls - would be affected by so many injuries.

``If you took Michael Jordan out of the picture completely, like David has been out, and then put Scottie Pippen and/or Dennis Rodman out for different stretches of games, the Bulls would be in trouble, too,‘’ he said.

He said he has had no thoughts of putting himself into the basketball operations of the team.

I would never get involved in that area,'' Holt said. I’m fine, very happy with Gregg (executive vice president Popovich) and Bob (coach Hill). They are handling the situation as well as it can be handled.

``The most critical decision that has to be made now is when to bring David back. We don’t want to rush it in any way. March and April are a long, long ways away.‘’

A:并没有。

A:没有。

A:不尴尬。

Back talk: Robinson speaks about injury, team’s plight

David Robinson has struggled with lower back pain for the past two years. It flared up earlier this summer during a pre-Olympic game and again Oct. 11 in a Spurs preseason game. He hasn’t played a regular- season game yet this season.

Doctors told the All-Star center last Friday he could still be two-to-four weeks away from playing. Here’s a Q-and-A session with Robinson, who offers his thoughts about the injury and how it has affected the Spurs:

Q: There have been suggestions in the media that people have underestimated your value to the Spurs, and that your stock as a player is increasing as you sit out and the team falters. What do you think about that opinion?

A: I don’t hear anyone talk about that at all. I really could care less. All I care about is us winning games. It’s very frustrating, just watching. So none of that stuff matters.

Q. There’s also talk that the team’s record (2-10 before playing at Dallas on Tuesday night) suggests you don’t have enough talent around you. How do you feel about that?

A. I disagree with that. Teams win because they play together. It doesn’t matter about individual talent, who can carry a team, or whatever. You win games because you play well together. There have been teams with individual talent that didn’t win. You win because you play together and trust in each other.

Q. There has been speculation that Coach Bob Hill may be replaced soon because of the losing record.

A. I don’t think that’s true. I don’t think that’s justified. We’ve been through a lot this early part of the season. There’d be no reason to do that at this point at all. Coach Hill has done a good job. Guys are still responding to him. There’s no reason at all for that to happen.

Q. Has sitting out affected your outlook on the game?

A. It does. It has in a lot of ways. I’m used to being out there. Sitting on the sideline, the game looks so much easier. From a fan’s perspective, you wonder why guys aren’t getting rebounds. You wonder why they’re not getting loose balls. It looks easier.

On the floor, you’ve got these big bodies on you and you may feel fatigued. Sitting on the side, you don’t feel that. You don’t feel the pressure that you do when you’re out there. All that has affected the way I practice and prepare.

Q. Has sitting out made you think about life after basketball?

A. Not really. I don’t really think about it. I’ve never worried about life after basketball. I know there’ll be plenty of great things for me to do, and I’ll enjoy it. Right now, I enjoy what I do (as a player). That’s what I’m focusing on.

Q. How has your faith helped you deal with the injury?

A. My faith helps me in a sense that it keeps me very motivated, very excited about what’s going to happen. Just because I know that when you walk with God, and honor him, that he’ll honor you. It’s just that I know good things are going to happen. I can’t enumerate them. But I know they’re going to happen. Awesome things are going to happen.

Q. Do you have any second thoughts about playing in the Olympics after hurting your back in the pre-Olympic exhibition opener at Indianapolis?

A. I have no second thoughts. It was an awesome experience. As a basketball player, you seek out all the opportunities that you can find. Whether I’m playing with (Spurs teammate) Avery (Johnson) or (Houston Rockets center) Hakeem (Olajuwon) during the summer, or whether I’m in Indianapolis, playing with Shaquille (O’Neal), Karl Malone (and) Scottie Pippen, I’m searching out a chance to get better.

There’s no way I could regret that. You’re playing with the best players in the world. I have a chance to improve my game. It’s what I thought the people in San Antonio wanted.

If I’m going to take criticism for that, that’s the best kind of criticism to take. If I get criticized for working harder, that’s fine.

Q. Maybe some people thought, after you hurt the back in early July, you should have backed off for awhile.

A. I hurt it a couple of years ago. I had the hernia (at the Olympics). That’s the only thing that hurt me when I went out there. My back wasn’t hurting. It wasn’t the problem. My stomach (which required surgery in August) was the problem.

It just so happened that, when I hurt my back, it was the worst combination you could have, stomach and back. I just fell into a bad situation. That could happen anywhere.

I already had a gold medal. I didn’t need to do it again. I just felt like it was something that would be good for me as a player.

Q. What do you do in your rehabilitation?

A. I do stomach-strengthening exercises. Trunk-stabilization exercises. I lay flat on the floor, and my head is somewhat elevated. I keep my shoulders straight and I kind of act like my stomach is a bridge to be crossed.

Q. What about future rehabilitation after you return to playing?

A. When I go on the road, I have to make sure I get firm support

in the bed. I will have to have some kind of back support on the

plane. Other than that, I don’t think I will be affected in a major way.

I have to be careful about using my back to lift things, you know. (I have to) bend down and use my legs. That’s every day of my life now. Sure, this has changed my life. I know that every day I have to maintain this program of exercises. I have to keep my stomach strong.

Q. When did you realize it was badly hurt?

A. It goes to the point that I couldn’t bend over to brush my teeth. I couldn’t lift my kids. You know, you get used to playing with pain. But when you can’t do those things, you know you have serious problems.

Q. Did you have any feelings of real anger after you first learned that you would be out for a while? Did you ever come close to exploding?

A. No. It didn’t build to the point of any real anger. No explosions at anybody. It was more of a case of frustration, disappointment that I can’t play.

Maybe if it had come late in the season, close to or in the playoffs, then there would have been a lot more anger. Right now, I just get sick of watching the team play when I can’t. That kills me. I’m not used to that at all.

Q. Do you ever feel embarrassed about not being able to play?

A. Not embarrassed. Just disappointed.

Q. Did you have any trouble telling the other guys that you would be out?

A. I had no trouble telling the other guys what’s wrong with my back. They could see that something was obviously wrong.

Q. What is your level of assuredness that you will be the same player you were when you return?

A. That’s the thing; I don’t want to be the same player that I was. I want to be a better player than I was.

I just feel like, physically, I feel as good as I’ve felt in many years. My body is stronger, more solid, more balanced right now. I’m hungry to play. I want to play. I’m just excited about going out there and playing better.

I don’t look at it the way other people do. These questions are kind of funny.

Q. I guess maybe it’s because some people with back injuries never feel the same afterward.

A. That may be true with people who have back surgery. Fortunately, I never had surgery. They didn’t have to cut my back open. I’ve just had to deal with a lot of pain.

These exercises to strengthen my back make me feel confident. I know losing my stomach (in the hernia surgery and the ensuing monthlong layoff) was the worst thing. It makes sense that exercises for my stomach area and my trunk-back, strengthening that area, will protect me from having it happen again.

I feel that way, and I believe what the doctors say. So I have a lot of confidence that I’ll be able to come back and be stronger.

Q. Do you have any idea whether your return will be closer to two weeks or four weeks from now, as the doctor suggested last Friday?

A. I have no idea. I feel good right now. I feel like everything is going along as well as I can expect. I still have some pain. But I don’t expect all the pain to go away.

I’m keeping in shape. I’m doing a lot of things, stretching it and so on. It feels good to be out there at practice. I’m jumping better. I’m running well. I’m excited about it.

(Glenn Rogers)

Blazers handle Spurs as skidding continues

Well, it’s Thanksgiving, and the Spurs can give thanks they have two days off before they have to play another game. Perhaps more than thanks, considering that the next game will be against the Chicago Bulls.

San Antonio (2-12) lost its seventh straight game Wednesday night, falling to the aggressive Portland Trail Blazers 120-109 at the Alamodome.

The Blazers knocked the Spurs around under the hoop, outrebounding them 45-32, 23-9 in the decisive second half. They charged to the basket, picked up the fouls and went to the line for 44 shots, hitting 31.

San Antonio shot 20 free throws and hit 17.

Free throws and rebounding were the story of this game,'' Spurs coach Bob Hill said. We couldn’t match their bodies underneath. (Arvydas) Sabonis had his way with Will (Perdue), just knocked him down.‘’

But the Spurs didn’t just mail this one in. They rallied consistently and shook off 33-percent shooting in the second quarter to finish the game at 50 percent.

Their last push back from double-digit deficits came down the stretch, when Sean Elliott hit two free throws to bring the team to within five, 105-100, with 1:30 left.

The dome crowd, down already from the original 13,079, grew a little optimistic and tried to cheer the Spurs on.

But Kenny Anderson, fouled by Avery Johnson on a drive, dropped in two free throws. Chris Dudley then blocked an Elliott try and Dominique Wilkins and Elliott missed follows on the same possession.

Cliff Robinson snared the Elliott rebound, was fouled, and hit both to give Portland a 109-100 advantage 51 seconds left.

Elliott had 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting. He hurt the Blazers with blasting drives down the baseline and curling weaves into the paint. And he added some jumpers.

I've been trying for the last couple of years to get Sean to make quick decisions, to go to the basket,'' Hill said. This was clearly his best game of the season.‘’

Wilkins again led the Spurs, this time with 33 points, the majority coming on hard drives and jumpers from around the floor. He also had 11 rebounds.

But I look at this as just another loss,'' Hill said. We can’t just do some things well some nights, others well other nights. We have to play a complete game. Tonight we didn’t hit them first before we jumped for the rebounds; we just tried to outleap them. They are too big and athletic for that.‘’

The Blazers added insult to injury, if not outright embarrassment, when they collected rebounds off their own teammates missed foul shots.

Gary Trent did it late in the final quarter when he rebounded a Chris Dudley missed free throw, picked it up off the floor and put it in.

The 6-foot-1 Anderson did it twice, once for a three-point play when he was fouled going up for a layup of his teammate’s missed free throw.

That's a prime indicator of how things have been going for us,'' Spurs point guard Avery Johnson said. We can’t get a rebound off a free throw. Normally that will happen maybe once a game; tonight it happened a lot.‘’

We went small against Dallas (Tuesday night) and forced them to go small,'' Perdue said. But tonight. P.J. (Blazers coach Carlesimo) just said, `No, you’re going to have to match us.’ ‘’

Perdue struggled all night. He had just five rebounds and was 1 of 7 from the floor for two points.

``Will didn’t have a stellar night,‘’ said Hill when asked why he didn’t put the 7-foot center in until late in the final quarter to help alleviate the rebounding problem.

Perdue was the recipient of some Hill wrath in the third quarter. Hill called a quick 20-second timeout on the second possession of the period and shouted, ``You’ve got to run,‘’ at Perdue. The center was put on the bench a short time later.

The Spurs did hold their own in the first half, outboarding the Blazers 23-22 while going into intermission down six, 51-45.

This stretch (of losses) is the worst I can remember,'' Johnson said. What I’m learning is that we have to appreciate where we were when we were winning 62 and 59 games (the last two seasons). We should cherish that.‘’ - - -

Spurs Notes - Person exception: The Spurs possibly could bring in another player using a medical exception for Chuck Person and still have Person return to play late in the season.

The Spurs have requested the medical exception. If granted, the team would have half of Person’s salary or half of the league’s average salary to offer a free agent. In either case, the amount would be about $1 million.

It's a hypothetical question and the hypothetical answer is that there is nothing written that would keep Person from returning late in the season,'' NBA spokesman Chris Brienza said. But that’s why we have independent doctors examine the players and why we would hold the right to review the situation later.‘’

Person, who underwent surgery to repair herniated discs, is expected to be out 3-6 months.

The Spurs were granted an exception in 1992-93, when Terry Cummings underwent surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He returned to play in April that season.

- Like old times: Coach Bob Hill, trying to snap the team out of its losing ways, has been using varying lineups throughout recent games.

Center Will Perdue’s time on the floor was 23 minutes against Vancouver, 24 against Dallas. He sat throughout most of the fourth period against the Grizzlies. Dominique Wilkins saw time in the center slot against the Mavericks.

I really don't know the answer, I think Bob is just experimenting with the smaller lineups,'' Perdue said. We had Dominique at center and Sean (Elliott) at power forward against the Mavericks. We had Caddy (Greg Anderson) in the fourth period against Vancouver.‘’

Commenting on his lack of time in the final period, Perdue said: ``It’s kind of like in junior high school -we had six guys who would play in the first and third quarters, six who would play in the second and fourth quarters.‘’ - Glenn Rogers

Hill, Perdue talk over recent effort

Spurs coach Bob Hill insisted Friday that center Will Perdue is not in his doghouse. But as the Spurs try to break a troublesome, seven-game losing streak at 7:30 tonight in the Alamodome against the defending NBA champion Chicago Bulls, Perdue is probably close enough to the coach’s kennel that he can hear the hounds wailing.

``I don’t wash my dirty laundry in the news,‘’ said Hill, brushing off questions about the situation after Friday’s team workout at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Hill tried to ease the tension between himself and Perdue by inviting the veteran center to talk things over at lunch.

I don't know what this is about,'' Perdue said as he left practice. But I guess we’ll find out.‘’

The meeting may have had something to do with Hill’s reluctance to use the 7-foot Perdue during fourth quarters in the team’s three previous losses. It also might have had something to do with some thinly veiled verbal barbs between the two over the past several days.

Perdue has grumbled about his playing time, at one point comparing the situation to his days as a junior high school player. Hill, conversely, has given less-than-glowing accounts of Perdue’s performances.

The situation could provide some fodder for Bulls forward Dennis Rodman, who will be playing his first game at the dome since the Spurs traded him to the Bulls for Perdue in October 1995.

Rodman may find it ironic that he was shipped out of San Antonio as a distraction, and then on the day that he returns - he missed last year’s game in San Antonio because of a pulled calf muscle - he reads about a spat between the coach and his replacement.

Perdue insisted there is no rift developing between himself and Hill.

``Right now, I don’t see it,‘’ he said after the Spurs’ 120-109 loss to Portland on Wednesday night.

But Perdue quickly added, ``If this continues, I’ll have to take a different approach.‘’

Hill was reluctant to say what Perdue needed to do in order to earn more playing time. He said simply that Perdue hasn’t fit into the scheme of recent ploys to use smaller, quicker players.

It's a tradeoff,'' Hill said. If you have the choice, do you use size or lack of speed, or do you use more skill? But, to answer your question, no. Caddy (Greg Anderson) is not in my doghouse, and Will is not in my doghouse.‘’

Perdue smiled and shook his head when told of the coach’s latest assessment.

If that's how he feels, it's fine,'' Perdue said. We just need to get some wins and we’ll be all right.‘’

The Spurs (2-12) are mired in their longest losing streak since they dropped nine in a row at the end of the 1989 season. The Bulls, who stood 13-1 going into Dallas on Friday night, would seem to be the last team the Spurs would want to see.

Do we have enough firepower to beat them?'' Spurs point guard Avery Johnson asked rhetorically, laughing at the question. This is the NBA. Come on. Anyone can win.‘’

Johnson pointed out that the Spurs, who have played all season without injured All-Star center David Robinson, defeated the Los Angeles Lakers a few weeks ago.

It we don't think we have enough to beat Chicago,'' he said, then we should stay home.‘’

Tension has mounted in the Spurs’ camp since it was learned last Friday that Robinson, the perennial All-Star and ``Dream Team’’ center, would be out another two-to-four weeks.

The Spurs dropped all three games on a recent road trip, including losses at lowly Vancouver and Dallas.

November to remember? Not for struggling Spurs

Spurs fans will be glad to turn the page on the calendar today. November has passed, and it couldn’t have happened too soon. The Spurs endured their worst first month in history, finishing 2-13 after Saturday night’s 97-88 home loss to Chicago.

After the last 30 days, some of the Spurs’ fans will probably find joy in sitting stalled on a freeway access road in the midst of a Christmas-shopping traffic jam at the mall.

Either that, or they can schedule that long-overdue root canal.

They may do anything to take their minds off all those games early in the month when the team was scoring in the 70s. There were five games when the Spurs couldn’t muster a mere 80.

In many ways, this was tantamount to margaritas being banned on the River Walk. The Spurs have long been known as one of the highest- scoring teams in the league. Only three times in their first 21 seasons had they scored in the 70s. And then they do it five times in two weeks?

On top of that, losses to the Timberwolves, Nuggets, Clippers, Grizzlies and Mavericks cut deeply. The Spurs went 0-7 against teams that finished in the lottery last season, and they took a seven-game losing streak - the longest in seven years - into the Chicago game at the Alamodome.

Despite all the sevens, the Spurs were the unluckiest team in pro basketball.

Injuries caused seven players -David Robinson, Chuck Person, Charles Smith, Will Perdue, Vinny Del Negro, Sean Elliott and Monty Williams - to miss games.

Robinson and Person sat out the entire month. Smith missed 11 games and Perdue eight. Backup centers Greg ``Cadillac’’ Anderson and Perdue have played the better part of the last two weeks with broken fingers.

In the last few days of October, Spurs coach Bob Hill had a feeling it would be rough in the early portion of the schedule. He already knew Robinson would be out for an extended period with his ailing back.

It's the reality of our existence,'' Hill said at the time. We just have to wade through it. Our team has been criticized for not having the players to support David. Well, now we’ll get a chance to show what we have.‘’

Perhaps that was the toughest part of the ordeal. Because of all the other injuries, the Robinson-less Spurs never got a chance to show what they were made of.

Not only did they miss Robinson, they could barely find enough players to practice. Everyone was out of position. Out of sorts. Out of synch, in general.

Nobody was more out of sorts than Hill, who kept hearing on national radio that his job might be in jeopardy. What may have been more disturbing is that he never heard any assurances from team management that he would be the coach for the remainder of the season.

Hill didn’t get any assurances because he probably is on the bubble. It’s sad, because the coach of the team’s last two division champions has been one of the best in franchise history.

At the same time, it’s the nature of the business that any coach in the last year of his contract, a coach who is losing - for whatever reason - is going to be judged on almost a day-to-day basis.

The worst and best news of the month came in a span of three days last weekend. Robinson learned he would be out another two-to-four weeks, until ``early December’’ at least, and possibly longer.

The best news came a few days later when Robinson adamantly suggested that he believed in his doctors, who have told him he could be better than ever when he finally returns.

``I have a lot of confidence that I’ll be able to come back and be stronger,‘’ he said.

Curing the wounded pride of the coaches, players and fans might be another matter. Maybe the best solution would be to turn the calendar page on November.

Better yet, tear it out and toss it in the garbage.

(Jerry Briggs)

(Doug Sehres)

Bulls do number on Spurs - Record crowd watches Jordan reach milestone

The largest home crowd in Spurs history suffered from an identity crisis Saturday night. Some of the 37,058 fans at the Alamodome wore red and black and yelled for the defending NBA champion Chicago Bulls. Others came to support the home-team Spurs.

Bulls fans went home happy, as Chicago pulled away in the second half for a 97-88 victory.

It was the eighth loss in a row for the Spurs, who tied the fourth-longest losing skid in franchise history. The Spurs, playing without injured All-Star center David Robinson all month, fell to 2- 13.

The Bulls improved to 15-1.

After the game, Spurs players complained about the pro-Bulls hoopla surrounding Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.

It's not good,'' Spurs forward Sean Elliott said. Who are they rooting for? I know it’s Michael. But we need fans to come in here and root for us.‘’

Jordan scored 35 points to give him 25,000 for his career. Pippen added 20 points and Rodman, a former Spur sent to the Bulls in a controversial trade last fall, secured 14 rebounds.

Dominique Wilkins scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who have lost 11 of their last 12. Elliott, who sat out Friday’s practice with an injury, added 17 points.

Running with high energy early, Elliott struggled in the fourth period, hitting only 1 of 6 from the field.

It felt good through three quarters,'' Elliott said. It just got to me some in the fourth.‘’

Center Will Perdue, coming off a sitdown discussion with Spurs coach Bob Hill over his role on the team, pulled down a career-high 23 rebounds.

Perdue also said he thought the Spurs deserved more support in their biggest game of the year.

I can understand (support for the Bulls),'' Perdue said. It’s because of two things. A: They have the greatest player ever in Michael. B: They have the greatest player in the league right now in Scottie. That’s a big attraction.

``But it kinda grinds at you when they come on the floor and they get the bigger ovation. I know we’re 2-13 and they’re 15-1. But this was a situation where we needed all the support we could get.‘’

Trailing by 10 in the first quarter and by one at the half, the Bulls scored nine of the first 12 points of the third period and took control of the game.

Center Bill Wennington scored 12 of his 18 points in the period, including a stretch in the final 8:28 of the quarter when he went 5 of 5 from the field.

``I thought that hurt us as much as anything,‘’ Hill said.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Bulls led 61-54. The Spurs, misfiring on shots that may have been hoisted too early in their possessions, never got closer than seven points in the remaining 12 minutes.

Jordan nailed a 16-foot jumper from the side with 29.4 seconds remaining for his 25,000th point. He reached the plateau in only 782 games, faster than anyone in history, except for Wilt Chamberlain.

Chamberlain did it in 691 games.

Rodman served as a lightning rod for fan interest all night. He had his hair colored earlier in the day in San Antonio and showed up for the game resembling the NBC peacock. His hair was orange, streaked with purple and aqua.

Rodman, traded from the Spurs to the Bulls in October 1995, picked up a technical foul in the third quarter. He was whistled for the infraction after Perdue hit a bucket off a rebound with six minutes left. Rodman, in frustration, punted the ball up in the air.

Asked what it was like to play in San Antonio for the first time since the trade, he said: ``I’m a pro. This is a business. I closed the door on San Antonio when I left . . . People in the organization can kiss my a–.‘’

The Spurs’ longest losing streak came in the midst of the 1988-89 season, when they dropped 13 in a row from Feb. 4 to March 2. The team also lost 10 straight in March and April, 1987. The third- longest streak came at the end of the 1989 season, when the Spurs lost nine in a row.

San Antonio has lost eight in a row two other times, in December of 1988 and in February and March of 1984.

The Spurs used a 20-8 run in the first period to build their largest lead of the first half. Wilkins scored seven in the streak and hit a three at the end of it to give the home team a 22-12 advantage. San Antonio led 26-23 after one period. - - -

Spurs Notes

- Hill 'n Will: Spurs coach Bob Hill and center Will Perdue insisted Saturday there is no problem between the two.

Nevertheless, Hill took Perdue out for lunch Friday at the Broadway 50-50 to talk things over, meeting his center halfway - so to speak.

I'm not upset at Will Perdue,'' Hill said. There’s not a problem. My wife saw that today in the paper. She was yelling at me.‘’

Perdue has been frustrated watching from the bench in the fourth quarters of recent games. He downplayed the issue in an interview before the Chicago game Saturday night.

If it was something happening over 10 games, I'd be concerned about it,'' said Perdue, the Spurs' starting center in the wake of a back injury to David Robinson. But it’s only been two games.‘’

Hill wrote a note to a reporter before Saturday’s game, reminding that the Spurs are missing 48 points and 23 rebounds per game between Robinson, Chuck Person and Charles Smith - all out with injuries.

``That equals frustration for everyone,‘’ Hill wrote.

- The `backbone’ speaks: Chicago Bulls forward Dennis Rodman called himself ``the backbone’’ of the Spurs during his two-year stay in San Antonio.

I thought I was the backbone of this team,'' said Rodman, traded from the Spurs to the Bulls in October 1995. I thought I motivated David (Robinson) to strive a little higher.‘’

Rodman, speaking tongue-in-cheek, said he thought Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich and Hill were proud of him for winning a championship last season.

I've always been a winner,'' Rodman said. Even here.‘’ - Jerry Briggs

Spurs fans find reason No. 23 to cheer

NBA superstar Michael Jordan did Saturday what the 2-12 Spurs haven’t done in a long time. Pack the Alamodome.

The four-time NBA Most Valuable Player -with an assist from ex- Spurs bad boy Dennis Rodman - had the soldout record crowd of 37,058 roaring as he dunked, rebounded and racked up 35 points to help the Chicago Bulls beat San Antonio, 97-88.

The thrill began in the $500 apiece courtside seats where Austin Trisha and Jim Weiland, ages 15 and 12, enjoyed an early Christmas present from their parents.

It stretched across a sea of red Bulls shirts to a $5.50 obstructed view spot filled by Houston teen-ager John Williams, who only wants Jordan’s M.J. Cologne on Dec. 25.

This is the best moment of my life. My heart is racing,'' exclaimed Williams, 15, whose Jordan collection includes 37 posters and 142 trading cards. I don’t care if I have the worst seats in the house ‘cause I get to see him.’’

For one local couple, the Spurs-Bulls battle began weeks before anyone stepped onto the court.

``My boyfriend and I got into a hair-pulling fight because he wanted me to root for the Bulls, but I like the Spurs,‘’ said Veronica Barbosa, 16, a San Antonio native.

Ron Valencia, also 16, a Washington transplant, explained: ``She’s my girlfriend. She’s supposed to go who I go for.‘’

But Barbosa, a lifelong Spurs fan, stood her ground, saying: ``This is the ‘90s.’’

The Jefferson High School couple were about to end their one-year relationship when Valencia offered a compromise.

The teen-ager paid $200 for two tickets. He wore a Bulls jacket; she a Robinson jersey. Both cheered on their respective teams.

``It’s the first fight I ever won with him,‘’ Barbosa said, grinning.

Sitting in the first row behind a basket, 9-year-old Rush Hannigan yelled for Jordan, but said he really missed Spurs center David Robinson, who has been sidelined with a back injury.

``I like David Robinson first, (Spurs forward) Sean Elliott second and Michael Jordan, he’s probably third,‘’ Rush said as he enthusiastically backed the home team.

As for Rodman, who was sporting a new orange, fuschia and green do, Rush grimaced, saying: ``He’s probably 100.‘’

As an actor, however, Jordan fared No. 1.

Fresh from seeing the Air Jordan antics in his film debut in the loony adventure, Space Jam,'' in which he and Bugs Bunny and his buddies battle aliens in a high stakes basketball game, Rush said: It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.‘’

The arena was filled with an electricity rarely seen at a Spurs game.

The instant Jordan appeared, people leaped to their feet. Some even jumped onto their chairs, until angry fans behind them and ushers ordered them down.

Those closest to the hardwood were passed cameras from people in the less fortunate seats for stellar shots of Jordan as he played in the 782nd game of his career.

It was a night when even longtime Spurs fans seemed content to swap the black and silver for the red and black.

Among those was oil refinery worker Fabian Vargas, his wife and seven of their friends who paid $45 each for $9 face value tickets in the near-nosebleed section.

``I like the Spurs, but I’m here to see Michael Jordan,‘’ said the 26-year-old Corpus Christi area man as he watched the basketball icon reach an NBA milestone of 25,000-points.

He's the best,'' Vargas gushed. There’s no one like him.‘’

Stars offer straight bull on Spurs - Jordan, Rodman offer different viewpoints

The Bulls’ locker room always will remain unique - well at least during the Jordan-Rodman era. There’s superstar Michael Jordan - calm, courteous, tossing verbal bouquets at the recently defeated opposition.

There’s near-superstar Dennis Rodman - also calm and courteous, but tossing verbal jabs at the vanquished foe.

``They played hard tonight,‘’ Jordan said of the Spurs after the Bulls’ 97-88 victory Saturday night at the Alamodome.

``They were frustrated at times because they wanted to prove they could compete. I know they probably heard all day about how they were going to be crushed. They didn’t want that to happen.‘’

Rodman’s take on the Spurs’ effort was quite different.

Those guys over there just aren't working together,'' he said. All they want to do is score. They are not dedicated to winning. I don’t have any respect for that. You have to have people concerned about the team.

``I love (new Spurs forward) Dominique (Wilkins), love to see him back in the league, but, come on . . . spread the wealth.‘’

Rodman was referring to what he considered to be too many shots from Wilkins.

Yet Wilkins, guarded by Rodman throughout the night, took 20. Jordan took 35.

Rodman had kinder words for Spurs point guard Avery Johnson.

He's their workhorse,'' he said. He wants to win, but they just aren’t working together. AJ got frustrated (when he picked up a technical foul).‘’

Rodman tried to wrench the ball from Johnson, but he wouldn’t let loose after being called for an offensive foul against Steve Kerr - Johnson’s second of the night. AJ’s protests to officials brought the technical.

Rodman also took a hard swipe at the referees.

I might get fined for saying this, but the refs (bleep),'' he said. Ed Middleton, come on . . . they probably hate our guts and we hate theirs.‘’

Rodman also picked up a technical when he kicked the ball into the stands after being frustrated by a score from Will Perdue. Rodman waved his arms disgustedly at the refs at another point after being hit with a loose ball foul.

The dome crowd this time appeared laced with plenty of boos for the former wild Spur. They jeered his name during pregame introductions and during some of his on-court antics.

Jordan needed all 35 shots to score 35 points and hit the landmark 25,000-point mark, the 10th player in NBA history to reach the career milestone.

I didn't want to score the 25, 000th tonight,'' Jordan said. But (Bulls coach) Phil (Jackson) wanted me to get it out of the way. I wanted to do it in the next game (at Milwaukee) because my wife will be there.‘’

Jordan came close to missing the mark, missing four straight, off- balance and wild shots before getting it. Before the string of missies, he was clearly fooling around, laughing at Spurs coach Bob Hill after hitting two jumpers from the side, one right in front of the sideline-pacing Hill.

The dome-record crowd of 37,058 cheered wildly whenever Jordan scored and just about any time a Bull put the ball in the basket. At one point, it even booed when Johnson prevented Scottie Pippen from dunking on a breakaway by grabbing his arms.

Why Worm lives large: Space jammed

The smart Worm understands he doesn’t have to say a thing. The gracious Worm comes back to San Antonio for the first time realizing he’s lucky. But Dennis Rodman is not always smart, not often gracious. So when Rodman wasn’t announcing Gregg Popovich should be shot, then he was suggesting David Robinson isn’t really hurt.

And he asked sarcastically: ``I wonder who came out on top in this little deal? Who won the championship? Who made the right choice? Who’s with the right team?‘’

All good questions. But there is another, and it’s one that should make Rodman shake at the mere mention. What if the trade had never happened?

A guess: The Bulls still win the title last season. The Spurs aren’t much different with Rodman now. And Rodman would be just another stand-in as more than 37,000 came to see a bald guy score 25,000.

Rodman has no time for such conjecture. He says there are 1,000 things he would like to do, and thus far he’s completed about 20. He told Rolling Stone'' he calls it Phase 1, and it’s about challenging death, challenging homosexuality, being gay, challenging being afraid not to die, challenging the political part of life.‘’

The beauty of these challenges is that it opens up something known as the making-money phase. Rodman spent part of his off-season in Nice, France, filming a movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme (a sweet romance, we’re told). And then there’s his own MTV show that debuts next week.

More power to Rodman if he can spin the entertainment business his way. But it seems so easy now. ``Rolling Stone,‘’ for example, thought itself ground-breaking to picture Rodman in the nude this month, when every publication but his high-school yearbook has done that. And when Rodman told the magazine that his right hand was named Monique and his left hand Judy, well, isn’t that some zany stuff?

What San Antonio knows as well as anyone: Rodman works the media better than the refs.

And maybe that’s why the usually reserved Rodman decided to impale his old franchise. His attack on Popovich is almost funny in its exaggeration. ``They need to take his (posterior) back to the (bleeping) service, and someone needs to shoot his (posterior).‘’

But faced with the unavoidable truth - that Robinson means a lot to his team - Rodman chooses to ignore that. David Robinson, I don't know what his deal is,'' Rodman said. He has a hurt back or hurt feelings or hurt whatever. He’s getting paid 12 or 13 million to sit on the bench. It’s sad.‘’

So that makes a headline. And more than one San Antonian wonders what the Spurs would be like today if only they had kept such a tough winner.

The Spurs wonder themselves. Right now we have guys playing the power forward spot who have never played it,'' said Sean Elliott. So he’d solidify that.‘’

The same Rodman who arguably was the MVP of the 1996 NBA Finals is the same Rodman who would set picks, rebound and free up a few Spurs on the perimeter.

With Rodman, then, the Spurs would beat Vancouver. But after that, would he reverse a 2-13 team? Saturday gave no such evidence. Will Perdue got more rebounds than Monique and Judy combined - yet somehow those Bulls still won.

As good as Rodman is, he’s been a complementary player next to Isiah Thomas, Robinson and now the star of Space Jam. So as the crowds swell and the pop-culture craziness feeds off Michael Jordan, anyone with a gimmick can hitch a ride. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Worm

November had 30 long days for Spurs

Injured All-Star center David Robinson still could be at least a week away from playing for the Spurs in the wake of one of the most disastrous months in franchise history. The Spurs lost 97-88 at home Saturday night to the defending NBA champion Chicago Bulls. Seven injured players missed a total of 53 games during the month of November, in which the team went 2-13 and dropped the final eight games.

Next up are home games Wednesday and Friday against the Philadelphia 76ers and Vancouver Grizzlies, respectively.

Robinson hasn’t played a minute with a lower back strain that he aggravated on Oct. 11 in the preseason opener. He has been practicing with the team since Nov. 12, but hasn’t received clearance to play in a game.

He was on the floor most of practice the other day (last Friday),'' Spurs coach Bob Hill said. He was running the floor pretty good. He moved pretty good. He’s made progress. But he’s not David yet.‘’

Hill said Robinson felt ``a little stiff’’ Saturday as the team faced the Bulls at the Alamodome in front of a franchise-record crowd of 37,058. He sat and watched in street clothes while the Spurs played the Bulls within two points for most of three quarters before wilting down the stretch.,

After Robinson visited the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Inglewood, Calif., on Nov. 22, doctors told him it would be 2-4 weeks before he could play.

There was some optimism at the time that he could see action against Philadelphia or Vancouver. But that seems to be out of the question now.

It's just one of those injuries that will take time,'' Hill said. I don’t want him to come back too soon. I don’t think he’ll play this week. He’ll practice (today) and we’ll see where he is and where (forward) Sean (Elliott) is.‘’

Elliott has missed two practices and a game over the past 10 days with a sore right quadriceps muscle. The muscle above his right knee was aching in the second half against the Bulls. The injury hurts the two-time All-Star when he stops and starts running. It tightens up when he cools down.

Every team has guys nursing injuries,'' Hill said. It’s something they have to manage every day. With Sean, he’s been doubled all year. People are hitting him. It’s just started to wear him down. ‘Nique (Dominique Wilkins) is 36 and we can’t afford to practice him much. We’ve had a lot of days when we haven’t had 10 guys to practice.’’

One of the few hopes on the horizon for an infusion of new talent would be if the Spurs can receive a medical exception from the NBA league office for either Chuck Person or Charles Smith.

An exception would give the Spurs - a team that has surpassed the salary cap - a chance to sign another player at more than the minimum salary. The Spurs withdrew their request for the exception on Person last week, General Manager Gregg Popovich said.

``It’s not a season-ending injury yet,‘’ Popovich explained. He added that the NBA allows only one try for a medical exception on a player per season. In that respect, the team elected to withdraw the request with the option of renewing it at a later date.

``You can’t tell if (Person’s injury) is season ending until more time goes by, until he goes through more rehabilitation,‘’ Popovich said.

An exception for Person would clear about $1 million. An exception for Smith would clear nearly $2 million. But Popovich said he doesn’t want to speculate on whether the team would apply for the exception on Smith.

Right now, he's a player on our team resting an injury,'' Popovich said. I wouldn’t want to speculate on (whether the Spurs would apply for) him.‘’

The league requires that injuries should be determined as either season-ending or career-threatening before exceptions are granted.

Person, who hasn’t played in a game this season, could be out until February or March at the earliest, and possibly into April or May, after he underwent back surgery Oct. 29. Smith has chronic pain in his right knee and doesn’t know when he will play again. - - -

In Pursuit of 1,000 - Wilkins somehow keeps going after all these years in the NBA

Dominique Wilkins has played 999 games in his 14-year NBA career, and what did he get when he showed up for practice Monday? Abuse, and then more abuse.

First, the Spurs’ ageless forward took an elbow in the upper back during a scrimmage.

Following the workout, he sat on the side with an ice bag on the sore spot.

A straight-faced General Manager Gregg Popovich walked up to him and sarcastically said, ``You know, we don’t pay you for being injured.‘’

Wilkins had only a four-word response: ``That man is crazy.‘’

A 2-13 record in the midst of a mind-boggling series of injuries will do that to any general manager.

During a season of growing discontent, a team and its fans have to search for humor and inspiration in every place they can.

Wilkins, for his part, is providing more than his share of inspiration with a string of remarkable performances.

As he prepares to play his 1,000th-career game Wednesday at the Alamodome against the Philadelphia 76ers, the 36-year-old looks like he could go for another 1,000.

Just look at his statistics: Wilkins is leading the team in scoring (19.7 points), is second in rebounding (9.0) and is third in minutes (34.7) behind Sean Elliott and Avery Johnson.

To do what Dominique does at his age is unbelievable,'' Spurs coach Bob Hill said. He just goes out there and forces his will on the game.‘’

It’s been a week of milestones for the nine-time All-Star, who played last season in Greece. Last Tuesday at Dallas, he moved into seventh place on the all-time NBA scoring charts. Against the Sixers, he will become the 39th player in history to play 1,000 games.

Only eight active players, led by Chicago’s Robert Parish with 1,573 games, have been in 1,000 or more NBA contests.

It hasn't hit me yet,'' Wilkins said, gathering his thoughts about what he will feel after he reaches the 1,000 level. I hadn’t really been thinking about it. How many have done it? Hmm. That’s pretty good, I guess.‘’

What may be more significant is the force with which Wilkins is approaching the milestone. Over his last 10 outings, he recorded a couple of 30-point efforts and has averaged 23.5 points and 10.6 rebounds.

Hill said the only small forward he can remember who played at Wilkins’ level at his age was Bernard King, who at age 35 led the Washington Bullets in scoring, averaging 28.4 points in 1991.

``Just like Dominique, Bernard had the attitude, the desire and the will to play,‘’ said Hill, who coached in New York with the Knicks when King blew out his knee in 1985.

King and Wilkins share one other thing in common - both returned from career-threatening injuries to reach All-Star levels. Wilkins tore an Achilles’ tendon in January 1992 and came back to make the All-Star team the next season.

Likewise, King made the All-Star squad with the Bullets in 1988 after sitting out nearly two years in rehabilitation of his knee.

The Spurs jumped at the opportunity to sign Wilkins at the beginning of the preseason to compensate for the loss of forward Chuck Person to a back injury.

With Dominique, at his age, I'm not sure there are many who have done what he's done,'' Hill said. We’ll have to check.‘’

A check of the record book indicated that Wilkins may be in an exclusive class of players who have spent most of their careers at small forward - perhaps the most demanding position on the floor - and excelled at such an advanced age.

Boston Celtics forward John Havlicek, long regarded as one of the most well-conditioned players in NBA history, averaged 16.1 points and 4.0 rebounds in 34 minutes at age 37, when he finished his career in 1978.

Julius Erving retired at age 36 in 1987, averaging 16.8 points and 4.4 rebounds for the Sixers.

Larry Bird’s back gave out at age 35 in 1992, when he averaged 20.2 points and 9.6 rebounds for the Celtics.

I think I'm a smarter player (now),'' Wilkins said. With age and experience, you get smarter. You learn how to play. That’s how I’m still doing what I’m doing. In my first two years, I’d get four, five dunks a game. I’m still a very hyper guy, an emotional guy. But now, I only dunk it when I need to do it.‘’

Wilkins, a career 25.8 scorer, hasn’t averaged more than nine rebounds a game since 1991. Playing power forward for most of the past dozen games, he has been asked to crash the boards, and he has done so with a fury.

Rebounding is just wanting it,'' Wilkins said. You have to want to rebound. I know with David (Robinson) not in there, you have to step up your rebounding. Other power forwards don’t expect someone my size to hit the offensive glass. A lot of times I’m out on the perimeter and I just kind of sneak behind the defense.‘’

-Spurs notes: Elliott sat out practice with his sore right quadricep. He is expected to play against the 76ers. Robinson, who hasn’t played this season with a lower back strain, made it through the full practice. But Hill doesn’t expect his center to play against either Philadelphia or against Vancouver on Friday. - - -

Losses wearing on Spurs

If they offered an award for humanitarian spirit in the NBA, the Spurs might be first in line to win it. They have played many of the tired, the hungry and the woebegone franchises in the league during the first month of the season.

Against members of the NBA’s great unwashed, the Spurs have always been there, mopping a fevered brow and nursing each opponent back to health.

The Philadelphia 76ers are next in line at 7:30 tonight in the Alamodome.

The Sixers will be the eighth team the Spurs have faced that failed to make the playoffs last season. San Antonio has lost all seven of its previous contests against lottery competition.

Spurs coach Bob Hill expressed some exasperation when the subject was broached after Tuesday’s practice. It’s a subject that may be more sore than the length of the team’s injured list, its 2-13 record or eight-game losing streak.

We're just not a very good team,'' Hill said. Are we playing hard? Yeah, we are. But all of these stats on who we lost to, they don’t mean anything because we’re just not very good.‘’

For the last few days, in workouts closed to the public, the Spurs have started to resemble the team that won an average of 60 games per season and the last two Midwest Division championships.

Injured center David Robinson, who hasn’t played a game yet with a lower-back strain, survived a second consecutive day of practice in the best shape since he started working out with the team Nov. 12.

During Tuesday morning’s drills at the University of the Incarnate Word, Robinson banged with the big men in post-up drills, bounced around with good agility and dunked a few times with authority.

That's the second day in a row where I've felt pretty good,'' Robinson said. It’s responding well. It’s a good sign.‘’

Team officials don’t expect Robinson to play against either Philadelphia or at home against Vancouver on Friday. But there seems to be some hope that he could return in a limited capacity for next week’s West Coast road trip.

I would love to be back in action next week,'' Robinson said. I wouldn’t be 100 percent. But I could help.‘’

All-Star small forward Sean Elliott sat out both of the practices this week following Saturday night’s loss to Chicago. Elliott’s sore right quadriceps muscle tightened up in the second half against the Bulls. He said he will play against the Sixers.

I had a couple of days to get rested,'' Elliott said. That was pretty much the plan, to help me get over the hump with this.‘’

Overall, the Spurs have had seven injured players miss games during November. Robinson and Chuck Person, who may be out for several more months after back surgery, didn’t play at all.

Power forward Charles Smith has missed the last 11 games with chronic pain in his right knee, and he is out indefinitely.

With the uncertainty about who would be available to play from game to game, the Spurs have been vulnerable to every team.

They are 2-6 against last year’s playoff teams, with wins at Cleveland and at home against the Los Angeles Lakers. But they have played poorly - sometimes in long stretches - against the teams they usually would beat easily the last few seasons.

The Spurs have shot a cool 40 percent from the field in those seven losses. On the defensive end, they have allowed 47.2 percent for the opposition.

On the last road trip, Vancouver and Dallas hit season-highs in field goal percentage, with the Grizzlies shooting 54.3 percent and the Mavericks 56.7.

With the Spurs, who needs welfare reform?

Some players are blaming inexplicable lulls in concentration for the most embarrassing losses.

For instance, the Spurs battled from behind against Dallas last Tuesday to take a one-point lead at the half. Then they allowed a 12- minute layup drill and 31 points to the Mavericks in the third period to fall behind once again.

We just can't have the lulls against these teams,'' Robinson said. Everyone has to give good minutes, to get a solid 48. We can’t go out there in the third period and not have good energy. We can’t afford that right now.‘’

Elliott said even the players who are inserted into the rotation for spot duty need to realize that their time on the floor is important.

If we have three or four of our guys not ready to play, we're not going to win,'' he said. Guys can’t come in and give five B.S. minutes or 10 B.S. minutes. We have to have everyone.‘’

Losing string ends as Spurs topple Sixers

Avery Johnson upstaged heralded rookie Allen Iverson in the fourth quarter Wednesday night as the Spurs broke an eight-game losing streak with a 113-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at the Alamodome. Johnson outscored Iverson 18-9 in the final period. It was the first victory for the Spurs since they beat the Los Angeles Lakers 95-83 on Nov. 13. It was also the first win for the defending Midwest Division champions over a non-playoff team from last season.

The Spurs improve to 3-13 and 1-7 against lottery teams. The upstart Sixers had a two-game winning streak broken and fell to 7-9.

A confrontation between Spurs center Will Perdue and Sixers forward Derrick Coleman spiced the third quarter. San Antonio, in the meantime, turned up its running game and took an 82-73 lead going into the final period.

With less than three minutes remaining in the quarter, Coleman caught the ball on the fast break from Iverson. He went up for a shot and Perdue blocked it. In reaction, Coleman took a back-handed swing and landed a blow to Perdue’s chest.

Fans booed the referees’ call - a personal foul on Perdue and double technicals on both Coleman and Perdue. Coleman hit two free throws, but the Spurs answered with a three-pointer by Dominique Wilkins and a fast-break layup by Monty Williams for their largest lead, 79-63.

Spurs Notes

- Cummings rumors: Reports have surfaced that the Spurs are working on a deal to sign unrestricted free agent forward Terry Cummings.

Cummings, 35, spent all of last season with the Milwaukee Bucks. He played for the Spurs from 1990 through 1995.

Last season in Milwaukee, he played 81 games and averaged 21.9 minutes, 8.0 points and 5.5 rebounds.

- Dome fallout: A lens covering on a light in the roof of the Alamodome shattered and dropped glass fragments in the bleachers during the Spurs’ morning shootaround.

Fortunately, the dome’s arena configuration was deserted except for the basketball players and coaches on the court, and no one was injured.

It was really loud,'' a Spurs spokesman said. It sounded like a pop.‘’

Alamodome director Mike Abington traced the problem to a burned out lighting filament in one of 40 ``quick-strike’’ lights in the ceiling.

Since the filament was burned out, there was nothing to light, which caused pressure to build up,'' he said. Instead of it exploding into large pieces of glass, a safety device worked like it was supposed to and the lens shattered.‘’

Abington said the filament has been replaced. He said it was the first time a light lens had exploded at the dome.

Spurs guard Vinny Del Negro shrugged off the incident, noting, ``Nothing surprises me anymore.‘’

- Nique looks ahead: Spurs forward Dominique Wilkins believes he can play two or three more years, and he would like to finish his career in San Antonio.

``I would love to stay here a couple more years and end my career here,‘’ said Wilkins, who at age 36 is the oldest player in the NBA currently leading his team in scoring. - Jerry Briggs

From misfiring to fired up

- AJ points Spurs in right direction.
As the Spurs prepare to host the Vancouver Grizzlies tonight at 7:30 in the Alamodome, the mercury in Avery Johnson’s competitive thermometer keeps threatening to break through the glass and spill all over the basketball court.

Ever since Johnson was benched in the fourth quarter in an embarrassing loss to the Grizzlies Nov. 24 at Vancouver, the 5-foot- 11 point guard has burned inside with a renewed passion to turn things around for the injury-depleted Spurs.

In that game, I hit a little wall,'' Johnson admitted. Frustration set in. Disappointment set in. Coach sat me down for the last 15 minutes and I had a chance to think about a lot of things.‘’

It was the first time in Hill’s three seasons in San Antonio that he put Johnson on the bench in the fourth period of a game that wasn’t a Spurs runaway victory.

I was just thinking how even though we had injuries, that we were going backwards,'' Johnson said. I was also thinking about the Houston (playoff) series two years ago, when we were in the Western Conference finals . . . and how things can change so fast.‘’

Despite a 113-103 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday that snapped an eight-game losing streak, the Spurs have dropped considerably in stature as the two-time, defending Midwest Division champions.

Currently, the Spurs (3-13) are in sixth place and the Grizzlies (2-16) are seventh in the seven-team Midwest Division. Spurs center David Robinson hasn’t played yet this season with a lower back strain, and he might miss another two or three games, at least.

The team issued a statement late Thursday afternoon saying that Robinson wouldn’t play again until he sees Dr. Robert Watkins at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Inglewood, Calif. The Spurs said the appointment might be set for ``the beginning of next week.‘’

Under that time frame, Robinson could make his regular-season debut either next Tuesday at Phoenix or next Thursday at the Los Angeles Clippers in the final two games of a three-game West Coast swing, Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich said on his Thursday night radio show.

Neither forwards Sean Elliott (quadriceps tendinitis) nor Dominique Wilkins (lower back strain) practiced earlier Thursday, but both are expected to play against Vancouver.

Since the last game against the Grizzlies, Johnson has picked up his intensity noticeably.

In the four games, he has averaged 16.3 points, shot at a 58.6- percent clip from the field and has dished out 9.2 assists per game. Johnson played what Hill called ``maybe his best game’’ in three years Wednesday when the Spurs beat the Sixers.

I think it was the best game he's played since I've been here,'' Hill said. He played a very mature game. His decisions were always right on the money. It’s another example of how his preparation helps him. He studied a lot of film and just knew what to do.‘’

-Spurs notes: The agent for Wilkins said the international dispute over his client’s rights has been resolved. Steve Kauffman said a team in the Greek League filed paperwork late last week notifying all parties that it no longer is claiming rights to the Spurs forward.

He said Wilkins got most of the $3.5 million that was due from Panathinaikos, a team in Athens, Greece, for the second year of a two-year contract. Wilkins played one year for Panathinaikos, which won the European club championship last spring.

Elliott has sat out each of the team’s three practices this week. Wilkins came to practice but was sent to the doctor for an examination on his back.

A spokesman said Charles Smith’s absence from the Philadelphia game was excused. There is no word on when he can play again. Smith has chronic pain in his right knee.

Spurs must grin and bear second loss to Grizzlies

After taking a few tiny steps toward respectability in the past week, the Spurs made some long strides back into the abyss Friday night. The Vancouver Grizzlies stunned the Spurs 105-89 before 13,646 disbelieving fans at the Alamodome.

People say they're the worst team in the NBA,'' said disgusted Spurs forward Sean Elliott. We lost to them twice (this season). What does that say about us?‘’

After playing well against defending league champion Chicago last Saturday, then breaking an eight-game losing streak Wednesday against Philadelphia, the Spurs (3-14) looked like they might put together their first two- game winning streak of the season.

Vancouver, which entered the game with the worst record in the NBA, had other ideas.

The Grizzlies (3-16) won by the widest margin in their two-year franchise history. They also scored more points than they have in any other game this year.

On top of that, they fought off a Spurs rally in the final five minutes for their first road victory of the season.

They are beat up and hurt,'' said Vancouver coach Brian Winters of the Spurs. We play a different style than Philly. Philly likes to run, but we just can’t race up and down the court. We have to pick our spots and play to the post.‘’

Bryant Reeves, the Grizzlies’ second-year center, scored 29 points despite seeing double-team defense from the Spurs most of the night. In addition, Lawrence Moten, Chris Robinson and Anthony Peeler hit big three-pointers down the stretch.

Vancouver outrebounded San Antonio 42-37, a development that should sound an alarm bell in the halls of the Spurs’ front office. The Grizzlies, the worst rebounding team in the league, looked like a band of glass enforcers.

This is unbelievable,'' said forward Dominique Wilkins, who led the Spurs with 24 points. I can’t believe we came out and played that way. We just didn’t come to play and I can’t explain it. We should be embarrassed about this. It wasn’t them. It was us. We just didn’t play.‘’

Elliott, who scored 22, hit a three-pointer that brought the Spurs to within 89-85 with 5:33 remaining. Undaunted, Peeler answered with a monumental trey for Vancouver, which entered the dome 0-9 on the road this season and 5-45 away from home over the past two years.

Carl Herrera, playing center for most of the fourth quarter for the Spurs as 7-foot Will Perdue sat on the bench, responded with a layup. But the Grizzlies proceeded to outscore the Spurs 13-2 in the final 4:37 to put the game away.

Curiously, Perdue played only the last five minutes of the game. Starting point guard Avery Johnson also sat out most of the final quarter, playing the final three minutes.

Johnson declined to respond directly when asked if he thought he could have made a difference if he had played more in the closing minutes.

It was just a disastrous night,'' said Johnson, held to three points after scoring 23 and 24 in his past two games, respectively. We had some big (defensive) stops in the last quarter and they hit some big threes. There’s no way in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that we’d be down 0-2 to the Grizzlies.‘’

The Spurs have lost 12 of their last 14 games. During most of their misery-filled nights in November, they could legitimately blame injuries for their problems.

Not against Vancouver.

Even though the Spurs were without injured All-Star David Robinson and two others, and Elliott was less than 100 percent on a bad right leg, the Grizzlies played without two injured starters in forward Blue Edwards and Greg Anthony.

Reeves had missed the last four games with a sore knee.

Hill, making no excuses, admitted the obvious - that the loss was the low point of the season. He also struggled to explain why his team showed so little emotion or fire until the second half, when the Grizzlies had built sufficient confidence to hang on for the victory.

I just can't answer that,'' Hill said. I’ll have to sleep on it. We just have to go to practice (today) and try to work it out.‘’

The Spurs will embark on a three-game road trip, leaving San Antonio after practice today and flying to San Jose, Calif., where they meet the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night.

Golden State will be the 10th lottery team from last season the Spurs have faced.

Cummings: Spurs’ offer is an insult

The Spurs wanted Terry Cummings to suit up at power forward but the veteran elected not to sign for the league’s minimum salary of about $250,000. I just don't feel comfortable signing for the minimum,'' Cummings said Friday afternoon. I know I’d carry a pretty full load, do most of the work, so that wouldn’t work. I’m pretty good at my craft and I have to protect the worth of that craft.‘’

Cummings said the Spurs first offered a non-guaranteed minimum amount.

That was an insult,'' he said. Yes, they did finally agree to guarantee the minimum, but that would be pro-rated to the remaining games only.

I was waiting for them to offer something creative, but they didn't,'' the veteran said. I’m still OK, I have several options, talking to other teams. But if San Antonio had made a legitimate offer, I wouldn’t be talking to anybody else.‘’

The Spurs are over the salary cap and are limited to signing players to the league minimum.

The problem nowadays is that teams are paying a few guys a lot of money and then surrounding them with minimum-wage players,'' Cummings said. I learned that in Milwaukee last year, playing with a lot of young guys who didn’t know what they were doing, didn’t know the game.

Still, I wanted to return to San Antonio, but I was adamant that they would have to treat me right,'' he said. I still don’t think they treated me right the last time around. And, you know, if you want to be an elite organization, you have to treat your players right.‘’

Life goes on for Admiral-less Spurs - Robinson’s status remains uncertain

Spurs players are hoping for medical clearance that would allow injured All-Star center David Robinson to make his regular-season debut this week. But they also are preparing mentally for the possibility they could be without him for another few weeks. It could go either way when Robinson visits spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in Inglewood, Calif., on Monday.

Spurs fans and players had their hopes up - perhaps they were up too high - when Robinson visited the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic on Nov. 22.

Word on the street at the time was that Robinson would be cleared to play. But that word was dashed when Watkins advised against suiting up the 7-foot-1 franchise player. Stunning the Spurs, Watkins said it would be another two to four weeks.

It kind of let the air out of the balloon,'' Spurs guard Avery Johnson said. This time, if it’s the same (recommendation), I think the balloon will still have some air in it.‘’

Suffering from a lower back strain, Robinson is in much better physical shape than the last time he visited the clinic. He practiced four times in the last week and got through each practice.

Robinson, who went down with the injury Oct. 11, has not looked better since he was hurt.

I don't know what to think,'' said Johnson, one of Robinson's closest friends. He could be cleared, or it could be another two weeks. I really don’t know.‘’

The Spurs could use him. Even though Robinson feels good, the Spurs look bad. They probably never thought they would miss him as much as they have. After Friday’s stunning 16-point loss at home to Vancouver, they fell to 3-14 on the season.

We'd love to have him back,'' Spurs guard Vinny Del Negro said. Only time will tell.‘’

-Popping off: Spurs general manager Gregg Popovich, in response to callers on his radio show Thursday night, defended the trade of Dennis Rodman to the Bulls for Will Perdue in October 1995.

We were the last people who wanted him gone,'' Popovich said. Dennis didn’t want to be here. He orchestrated the whole deal.‘’

Rodman went on to help the Bulls to the 1996 NBA title. Following the Bulls’ victory in San Antonio last Saturday, Rodman ripped management for allowing the team to go downhill since he left.

It would be wonderful if we had a four-man (power forward) who could go get 14 rebounds and eight or 10 points,'' Popovich said. But we have to go with what we have.‘’

-TC missed: Spurs forward Sean Elliott said he would have loved for forward Terry Cummings to rejoin the team. But a deal for the former Spur, an unrestricted free agent, fell through last week.

``I always said I thought we missed Terry more than we missed Dennis last year,‘’ Elliott said.

-Visiting His Airness: Johnson, seeking insight into being a winner, said he talked with Michael Jordan in the locker room after the Bulls game.

I always try to talk with him,'' Johnson said. I ask him, What is your edge?' He said it's that he's so mentally strong. He told me a few years ago that I wasn't mentally strong enough. Some guys don't want to talk to a guy like Michael. They say, I don’t want to talk to Michael Jordan.’ I say, `Go find the keys to success. Put your pride aside.’ ‘’

-Restraint doesn’t pay: Perdue said he deserved the personal foul against Philadelphia’s Derrick Coleman in the third period of Wednesday’s game at the Alamodome.

But he wondered about the technical foul that followed.

Perdue made heavy contact with the Sixers forward, who was shooting a jumper off a fast break. When he missed the shot, Coleman responded by throwing a back-handed fist into Perdue’s chest. Referee James Capers called a personal foul on Perdue and a double-technical against Perdue and Coleman.

He said he saw the foul and the two of us talking,'' Perdue said. I said, `Didn’t you see Coleman stick his fist in my chest?’ He said that he didn’t.‘’

Perdue smiled when reminded that retaliation might have been warranted, shrugged and said, ``I thought if I did, I’d get a technical. It turned out I got one for nothing.‘’
