Knicks, nicks stop Spurs - Perdue breaks thumb in loss
The Spurs reacted with stunned amazement at their misfortune Saturday night after they received word that center Will Perdue had broken his left thumb during a 93-77 preseason loss to the New York Knicks at the Alamodome.
“I have never seen anything like this,” Spurs forward Sean Elliott said. “During this (training) camp, we’ve had guys sick, hurt. We came into it banged up. Now this. It’s amazing.”
Perdue hurt his thumb in the third period. Knicks forward Charles Oakley slapped down on Perdue’s hand and stripped him of the ball. On the Knicks’ ensuing possession, Perdue was called for a flagrant foul on Patrick Ewing, and complained to a referee that he thought Oakley had fouled him on the other end.
Starting for injured All-Star David Robinson, Perdue stayed in the game and played for nearly another quarter. He was taken out with 10 minutes left in the game and transported to a hospital, where X-rays showed a fracture in the tip of the thumb.
His injury leaves the Spurs with little-used Cadillac Anderson and journeyman Greg Kite to play the pivot in tonight’s exhibition finale at the Indiana Pacers. Neither Robinson nor Perdue is expected to be ready opening night on Friday, when the Spurs play at Minnesota against the Timberwolves.
“Unbelievable,” Spurs coach Bob Hill said. “Absolutely unbelievable. Now we’ve got to go play this other stupid (exhibition) game. I think I’m only going to start four guys. We are snake-bitten.”
The Spurs said Perdue would be out at least two weeks. Robinson, according to the team’s prev-iously-stated time line for recovery, will be out for the next nine-to-23 days with a back injury.
Hill reacted incredulously to the suggestion that the team might have to search for another center this week.
“We have to go get a center?” he asked rhetorically. “Where? There aren’t many. But I guess Monday we’ll have to go over that. I’m going to say a prayer before the Indiana game, hoping someone else doesn’t go down.”
Perdue was the second Spur to suffer an injury against the Knicks. In the second quarter, forward Monty Williams slipped running the floor on a fast break and bruised his elbow. He did not return to the action. Neither Perdue nor Williams will make the trip to Indiana.
Six players have suffered injuries or aggravated pre-existing conditions since the first of the month. The list includes Chuck Person (back), Robinson, Charles Smith (knee), Vinny Del Negro (knee), Perdue and Williams.
“We have guys dropping like flies,” said forward Dominique Wilkins, who led the Spurs with 24 points. “The team has to adjust. We have no choice.”
Anderson, who played only 344 minutes in 46 games last season, reacted with surprised to the suggestion that he might have to start at center in Minnesota.
“Nobody’s told me anything like that,” he said. “I just have to keep trying hard and help the team. But, really, nobody has told me nothing.”
The Knicks broke open a close game in the third quarter and cruised to the victory in front of 16,022 fans at the dome.
In the third period, New York outscored San Antonio 23-9 and held the Spurs to 3-of-19 shooting from the field.
“In the second half we just hit a cold spot,” Wilkins said. “We were all dragging out there a little.”
With the loss, the Spurs fell to 2-5 in the preseason. The Knicks improved to 4-3.
Ewing led the Knicks with 18 points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes. Rookie forward John Wallace came off the bench for 17 points and nine boards. Ewing, Oakley, Wallace and Larry Johnson controlled the inside, helping the Knicks to a 44-33 rebounding edge.
For the Spurs, Wilkins scored his two dozen points on 7-of-11 shooting. He has scored 46 points on 18-of-26 shooting in two games since returning to the lineup.
Notes
- Injuries: Spurs forward Charles Smith, resting a sore knee and ankle, did not play for the second consecutive preseason game Saturday and will not make the trip to Indianapolis, Ind., today for the exhibition finale against the Pacers.
The Spurs aren’t alone in their injury woes in the NBA. Indiana will be without centers Rik Smits and Erick Dampier and veteran forward Eddie Johnson against San Antonio tonight.
Smits is coming off September surgery on both feet. He hasn’t practiced since and will probably miss some of the regular season. Damper will be able to practice sometime this week. The rookie had hernia surgery last Thursday. Johnson won’t be back until December,
having sat out the entire summer after May surgery on a quadriceps tendon.
Pacers coach Larry Brown has returned to the bench after undergoing hernia surgery two weeks ago.
The Spurs will start the season without All-Star center David Robinson and forward Chuck Person. Person is scheduled for back surgery Tuesday in Inglewood, Calif. He will be out three months, at least.
Robinson is winding up a stay at the Kerlan-Jobe clinic in Inglewood. Also suffering from a back injury, Robinson could miss anywhere from three to as many as 10 games of the regular-season schedule.
The Spurs’ leading scorer and rebounder will return home today.
“I talked to him and he said he’s feeling better,” said coach Bob Hill.
- Schedule criticized: The Spurs’ exhibition schedule has been an irritation for Hill.
The team has had three back-to-back situations where the Spurs have played on consecutive nights. The third of the three will be tonight when the team meets the Pacers 24 hours after dueling with the Knicks.
- Radio change: The Spurs announced Saturday that today’s Spurs-Pacers game will be broadcast on The Ticket (KTKR, AM-760) instead of WOAI.
The broadcast will begin at 4:30 p.m. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.
A scheduling conflict forced the move, team officials said. - Jerry Briggs
