Spurs’ Graham tapped as coach for NBA Basketball Without Borders camp
[Image] San Antonio Spurs guard Devonte’ Graham (4), center, celebrates after scoring the winning point to win their NBA game with the Denver Nuggets at the Frost Bank Center on Friday, April 12, 2024 in San Antonio. Spurs won 121-120.
Spurs guard Devonte’ Graham will make for Spain later this month to impart his hoops knowledge to dozens of Europe’s top 18-and-under prospects at the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders (BWB) camp.
Graham will join Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton and a number of former NBA, WNBA and FIBA players and coaches at The Embassy Training Center Higuerón in Málaga. The players will participate in skill development, athletic testing, movement efficiency and 5-on-5 games from May 31 to June 3.
Graham might just end up training a future pro during his European excursion as 41 former BWB campers opened the 2023-24 season on NBA rosters.
In Wednesday’s press release, NBA Europe and Middle East vice president of basketball operations Neal Meyer said, "We look forward to hosting BWB in Málaga for the first time and welcoming the next generation of players from across Europe for a memorable experience as they learn from current and former NBA and WNBA players and coaches.”
A 2018 second-round pick out of Kansas in, Graham just wrapped up his sixth year in the NBA. He came to San Antonio in February 2023 via a trade with New Orleans and has appeared in 43 games for the Spurs, including 23 last season. Though he averaged only five points a contest, Graham authored a memorable moment on April 12 by sinking a game-winning floater to beat the defending champion Nuggets 121-120 at the Frost Bank Center.
“He busted his ass all year long,” coach Gregg Popovich said following that shocking upset. “He was always ready. I’m sure he didn’t like (not playing), but he was always there for his team.”
