MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said no determination has yet been made on whether rookie star will play on the second night of a back-to-back Wednesday at Oklahoma City.
“We’re going to talk it out,” Popovich said, after Wembanyama logged nearly 31 minutes in Tuesday’s 102-87 victory at Memphis.
Wembanyama has generally been playing back-to-backs over the past few months, and has missed three games total since the All-Star break.
He spent much of December and January under a minutes restriction stemming from an ankle sprain that also left him prohibited from back-to-backs for a period.
With the season winding down, Popovich indicated the Spurs might revisit that plan for the team’s final back-to-back of the season.
“It’s a question because we held him out of a lot of the back-to-backs when he had that foot thing,” Popovich said. “Now down the stretch, I’m not sure it makes sense to push it.”
If Wembanyama is held out, it would scuttle the final meeting this season against Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren, his chief rival in the NBA Rookie of the Year race.
Popovich said Wembanyama would have at least some say in whether he plays Wednesday, though the final decision will rest with the team.
“We’ll see how he feels, how his body is and decide,” Popovich said.
