Rarely used players coming to rescue for injury-depleted Spurs
Former Pelican Devonte’ Graham scored 20 points in 25 minutes in the Spurs’ win Friday night in New Orleans.
Victor Wembanyama finished one assist shy of a triple-double, but the first players Gregg Popovich mentioned after the Spurs’ 111-109 win over New Orleans on Friday were two players who spent the majority of the season at the bottom of the bench.
“Devonte’ was superb, Sandro was superb,” the coach said of guard Devonte’ Graham and forward Sandro Mamukelashvili.
After accepting their roles without complaint the past six months, Graham and Mamukelashvili are making major contributions for the injury-ravaged team.
Graham led the Spurs with a season-high 20 points against his former team before a sellout crowd of 17,422, many of whom undoubtedly cheered him on when he played for the Pelicans for one-plus seasons from 2021 until he was traded to the Spurs in February 2023.
“I know all the staff in the arena, all the coaches, all the teammates,” Graham said. “The city showed me a lot of love when I was here and I still got a home here.”
In a season-high 25 minutes off the bench, Graham hit a season-best four 3-pointers and also had five assists and a season-high three steals. It was a performance that no doubt reminded some at the Smoothie King Center of his play for the Pelicans in 2021-22 when he averaged 11.9 points and 4.2 assists over 76 games, including 63 starts.
“It was very satisfying,” Graham said of his play against New Orleans.
The Spurs (19-58) played without four rotation players, Devin Vassell (foot), Jeremy Sochan (ankle), Keldon Johnson (foot) and Cedi Osman (ankle).
The Pelicans had injury problems of their own, playing without leading scorers Zion Williamson (finger) and Brandon Ingram (knee) in losing their fourth in a row to fall to 45-32.
Wembanyama overcame a slow start — he finished the first half with just two points and no field goals — to record 17 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks as the Spurs rallied from a 15-point second quarter deficit.
But the win wouldn’t have happened without Graham and Mamukelashvili filling in so well.
“Pop told us the other day he don’t care who is playing,” Graham said. “(He said), ‘Whoever suits up go out there and play the right way, be aggressive, full of confidence,’ and that is exactly what we did tonight.”
In his first start of the season and just the 11th of his three-year career, Mamukelashvili scored a season-high 15 points on 7 of 11 from the field.
“Super happy for everybody who is playing who didn’t get a chance (earlier),” Mamukelashvili said of a list that also includes second-round rookie forward Sidy Cissoko, who was scoreless in six minutes Friday night. “We are here to win too. A lot of guys are now playing who usually didn’t play. We don’t want to go out there and just play around. We want to win.”
To stay ready, Graham and Mamukelashvili played daily three-on-three games after practice with Spurs staffers. And perhaps most important of all, they maintained a positive attitude.
“I get to play basketball for a living and life isn’t really that bad,” Graham said. “Wake up, get to travel, eat a lot of good food, paid flights, charter flights. If not playing basketball is the worst thing going on in my life, I think I am doing pretty well.”
Spurs set single-season assist mark
The Spurs on Friday established a club record for most games (42) in a season with 30-plus assists by notching 34.
“Very unselfish group,” Popovich said. “We have been a great assist team all year.”
With his team-high nine assists against New Orleans, Wembanyama has recorded five or more assists over his last five games, averaging 7.0 in that span.
“The best thing about Vic is he loves passing the ball,” Mamukelashvili said. “Even though sometimes he doesn’t make his shot, he won’t be a selfish player who tries to jack up his shot. He is going to give you the ball and trust you and trust your decision-making. I just love playing with him.”
Big Easy a Wembanyama favorite
Wembanyama said after Friday’s game he ranks French-flavored New Orleans as one of his favorite NBA stops.
“Right now, I’m craving home, so nothing can re-satisfy me except France, but I think it’s one of my favorite cities that I’ve visited,” he said. “Going to the restaurants, the food is pretty good. I just like the way the city looks, too.”
