布朗帮助不少人提升了他们的事业,像波普,Alvin Gentry(艾文-真齐,现任太阳队的助教),也包括John Calipari(约翰-卡里帕里,NCAA最具传奇性的主帅之一,现执教孟菲斯大学队)。

如果波普在这之前就是一言九鼎的重量级人物,他难道会选择再一次执教DA(Derek Anderson的缩写,德里克-安德森)吗?

Buck Harvey: Unlikely leader? Rise of Buford

The next general manager of the Spurs thought the ref had no clue. R.C. Buford, as he is known to do, reacted by saying a few things.

The official bristled, then marched to the free-throw line to hand the ball to a shooter. Buford couldn’t help himself.

“You might want to have them shoot,” Buford dryly suggested, “at their own basket.”

That’s how Buford got ejected last year.

From his daughter’s third-grade basketball game.

He’s already been kidded enough about the story, but it’s too good not to be told again. It defines a personality edgy enough to mix well with Gregg Popovich, and it defines his career.

After all, Buford rose from virtual elementary-school status to become only the third Spurs general manager in the past 20 years.

Eject him?

Admire the remarkable rise.

His promotion won’t dramatically change the dynamics of the franchise. Popovich remains the boss, and the Spurs will continue with his vision.

Buford will simply do what he’s done for about the past year, steering the franchise with research and ideas. In many ways he’s been the GM without the title, and he’ll do more now. Next summer, when Popovich is tied up with USA Basketball, the Spurs will need somebody in charge.

Buford says he never imagined such a career turn, and for a reason. He wasn’t nearly the college athlete that Popovich was, bouncing from Texas A&M to Oklahoma State. Then, fresh out of school, he basically worked for free as a grad assistant at Kansas.

His big break? He became Vice President in Charge of Larry Brown’s Dry Cleaning.

He’s heard the joke for years. But Buford couldn’t have picked a better employer/father figure than Brown. Brown advanced the careers of Popovich and Alvin Gentry, too, as well as John Calipari.

Buford worked his way up under Brown, and he was there for KU’s 1988 title. Could life get any crazier for a kid coach?

It did. Within months Buford was in South Texas, a 28-year-old assistant trying to tell NBA veterans a few things.

It’s been a Spurs pattern. Mike Budenholzer is today’s baby-faced assistant. Avery Johnson, looking back, says Budenholzer won his respect.

“I don’t know if I handled it as well as Bud,” said Buford. Early in San Antonio he ran into less coachable players, and he had trouble earning credibility.

One memorable scene came after the Spurs had traded a tough, acidic forward named Frank Brickowski. Back in town and playing for Milwaukee, Brickowski ran past the Spurs’ bench during a game and yelled at Buford.

It was far more obscene than anything involving dry cleaning.

Buford moved with Brown to the Clippers, then broke away. Buford headed back to college to be an assistant at the University of Florida, and it was a sacrifice. The $10,000 salary barely paid to move his family.

But he landed again in the right place. That one year at Florida, Buford went back to the Final Four.

Buford wanted to be a college head coach, and he almost got a chance that same spring. He finished second for the Pepperdine job.

He never got a better rejection. Popovich returned to San Antonio that summer, and he asked Buford to return with him.

They meshed. If others sometimes tiptoed around Popovich, Buford never did. Buford could always make fun of Popovich’s clothes, if not his offense, then defend his opinions.

Popovich trusts him and respects him. In any given week Buford is as likely to be in Spain as Maine, when he’s not figuring out another facet of the salary cap.

He’s well connected, but he doesn’t try to be everyone’s friend. Last year during the Derek Anderson negotiations, he played the bad cop.

If Popovich had been the heavy, could he have coached DA again? It’s a strategy the Spurs will use more this summer when Buford becomes the general manager.

Buford is also thorough, and Lon Babby, Tim Duncan’s agent, tells this story. Two years ago Babby was at home, watching the Spurs on TV, when Duncan left the floor with what looked like a severe abdominal injury.

Within minutes Babby’s telephone rang. It was Buford, from the locker room, with an update.

Buford has done more than facilitate, and last summer proved that. Popovich credits Buford for pushing Tony Parker on him, and no personnel decision in recent years could mean more than that one.

So Buford deserved his promotion. In an effort to keep Buford (Denver wanted to talk to him last summer), the Spurs chose to reward him.

Now comes his first question as GM: When’s he going to fire Popovich?

Buford laughed at the suggestion Monday. He knows the relationship, and this model of today’s GM-coach is more common than it used to be. There was a time when the GM had the power; now big-money coaches often do.

Still, don’t be surprised if Buford is the one who someday hires Popovich’s replacement, then tries to carve out his own vision.

Going by what he’s done thus far, isn’t anything possible?
