After a three-decade career at BellSouth Corp., he became chief operating officer at Cingular Wireless, overseeing the company’s successful integration of AT&T Wireless in 2005. (Cingular was later renamed AT&T.) The deal made it the No. 1 carrier by subscribers – pending Verizon Communications’s takeover of Alltel, which must be approved by regulators. After a stint in AT&T’s landline unit, he returned to the wireless division as CEO last fall.
