Express News(被译作圣安东尼奥快报/快讯报,还有过分者称为邮报 -_-)是全球报道马刺新闻最权威的媒体,其报道可信度也是最高的。

Addressing their needs for 3-point shooting, scoring depth and backcourt experience all at once,1. the Spurs signed veteran guard Nick Van Exel to a one-year deal today.

Van Exel, who ranks behind only Ray Allen in career 3-pointers among active NBA players, averaged 11.1 points and 4.3 assists in 53 games for Portland last season.

The 6-foot-1, 33-year-old guard previously played for the Lakers, Nuggets, Mavericks and Warriors in his 12-season career.

The Spurs may not be finished with their offseason maneuvering.2. Monday’s signing will not affect the amount of money they have to offer their other free-agent targets, including Michael Finley and Devin Brown.

Complete coverage of Van Exel’s signing will be in Tuesday’s Express-News.

Quickly, Van Exel a Spur

Mike Finger
San Antonio Express-News

Nick Van Exel arrived in San Antonio on Monday expecting some spirited conversation, maybe a nice meal, and not much else.

The Spurs wound up offering him a bit more than that. And by nightfall, Van Exel was checking into a local hotel with a signed contract, a few thousand new fans and another chance to win his long-awaited first NBA championship.

Van Exel, a fiery 33-year-old guard long known as one of the league’s most dangerous shooters, was so impressed by his meeting with a star-studded Spurs contingent that he wasted no time in signing a one-year deal with the team.

“He was just here to spend the day with them,” said Tony Dutt, Van Exel’s agent. “It just all kind of came to a head at once, and he’s excited about it.”

The Spurs, apparently, were just as enthusiastic. Not only did coach Gregg Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford meet with Van Exel on Monday, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Bruce Bowen also joined the recruiting effort.

“We wanted him in our program,” Buford said. “We think he’ll be a great complement to the team we have.”

1.Adding to the Spurs’ excitement is that the deal allows them to keep pursuing free-agent swingman Michael Finley. The specific terms of Van Exel’s contract weren’t released, but sources said the Spurs didn’t use the $2.5 million they had remaining from their midlevel salary-cap exception. Before Monday, they also had a $1.6-million exception available.

2.Finley, who is considering the Spurs, Heat, Suns and Timberwolves, is expected to make his decision today.

But even if Finley doesn’t end up in San Antonio, the Spurs believe their backcourt already has undergone a significant improvement. Van Exel, who with 1,473 3-pointers ranks behind only Ray Allen among active NBA players, has shown he can help playoff-caliber teams even in crowded backcourts.

In the 2003 Western Conference finals, for example, his sparkling performances for the Dallas Mavericks gave the Spurs headaches before they eventually won the series in six games.

“He’s always been a big-time performer,” Buford said, “and we like to be in big games.”

The 6-foot-1 Van Exel is coming off perhaps the worst season of his 12-year career, having averaged just 11.1 points and 4.3 assists in 53 games for Portland. For his career, he has averaged 15.1 points and 6.9 assists per game.

Van Exel missed 72 games combined during the past two seasons with the Warriors and Trail Blazers, mainly because of an arthritic left knee. In December, he was so frustrated by his banged-up body he announced he would retire at the end of the season.

3.But by the end of the season, Van Exel was confident his knee would allow him to keep playing. He became a free agent this summer when the Trail Blazers decided not to exercise the $12.7-million option on the final year of his contract, and he immediately began seeking teams he thought would contend for a title. Miami was his other main option.

Dutt said Van Exel, who will be formally introduced at a news conference this morning, didn’t present the Spurs with any demands in terms of playing time or shots. With Tony Parker and Ginobili entrenched as starters, Van Exel isn’t trying to stir the pot.

“I think he’s comfortable with however Pop wants to play him,” Dutt said. “There will be nights when he plays a lot, and some nights he won’t play at all. He’s fine with that.”

4.Van Exel’s signing gives the Spurs 11 players under contract for next season. They still would like to add another wing player, whether that turns out to be Finley or restricted free agent Devin Brown.

Meanwhile, Van Exel is hoping to ensure the Spurs will be pleased with their latest investment.

“Nick’s always been the kind of guy who gets taken for granted,” Dutt said. “He’s given up more to win than most people know. In this case, he could have gotten a lot more money elsewhere, but he wants to win.”

Only a few hours into his tenure as a Spur, Nick Van Exel already is trying to make his first assist.

Van Exel, the veteran guard who signed a one-year contract with the Spurs on Monday, said this morning he has contacted former teammate Michael Finley and urged him to come to San Antonio.

Finley, the most prized free agent in the NBA, is expected to choose among the Spurs, Heat, Suns and Timberwolves as soon as today.

“I did my recruiting,” said Van Exel, who played with Finley in Dallas. “But (Finley) didn’t give me any hints. I think he wants to keep it a big secret.”

If the Spurs don’t land Finley, they will turn their attention toward re-signing restricted free agent Devin Brown, coach Gregg Popovich said this morning. Either Finley or Brown would fill the team’s need for an extra wing player and give the Spurs 12 players under contract.

Newest Spur joins team’s effort to bring in Finley

1.Only a few hours into his tenure with the Spurs, Nick Van Exel had his fingers dancing across his cell phone keypad, feverishly trying to earn his first San Antonio assist.

Van Exel, who signed a one-year deal with the Spurs on Monday, said he sent several text messages urging former teammate Michael Finley to join him. The Spurs are one of four teams vying for the services of Finley, the free-agent swingman still said to be mulling over his much-anticipated decision.

“I did my recruiting,” said Van Exel, who played with Finley in Dallas in 2002-03. “But (Finley) didn’t give me any hints. I think he wants to keep it a big secret.”

But even with his newest guard leading the campaign, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich didn’t sound too optimistic about the team’s chances in the race, which also includes Miami, Phoenix and Minnesota. 2. The Spurs have $2.5 million to offer — about half as much as the Heat and twice as much as the Suns — but Popovich said Tuesday he thinks Finley is thinking of more than money.

3.“I’d be surprised if Phoenix wasn’t his choice,” Popovich said. “I think he’s got a great opportunity to start there and play a lot of minutes. He’s got great relationships with a couple of their players, Steve (Nash) and Raja (Bell). I think he’d be really comfortable there.”

Popovich confirmed that if Finley does end up elsewhere, the Spurs would turn to their own restricted free agent, Devin Brown, to fill their opening for another wing player. The team made Brown a qualifying offer of about $900,000, but his agent, Darrick Powell, said Brown “is not a $1-million player.”

Talks between the two sides have remained luke warm as the Spurs have pursued Finley.

“We told (Brown) we had to do the Michael Finley deal if it was possible,” Popovich said. “Devin probably doesn’t like that, but he understands that. That’s what this business is all about.”

Brown still can sign an offer sheet with another team, but the Spurs can keep him by matching the offer within seven days. Popovich said Brown’s back injury — which sidelined him for much of last season — hasn’t affected the Spurs’ approach this summer, even though he can’t be sure if Brown has completely recovered.

“I would hope so, but I would guess not,” Popovich said. “I don’t think you know if someone’s 100 percent until you get him into some kind of practice.”

Van Exel out money but collects with Spurs

If Nick Van Exel had only listened to his mother, he would be a wealthier man today. He likely would have avoided two miserable years in Golden State and Portland, as well as a summer of anxiety-filled job hunting.

But he also wouldn’t have become a Spur.

1.So in retrospect, Van Exel said he’s glad that three years ago he agreed to the deal in which he gave up $12.8 million but gained the freedom that ultimately led him to San Antonio.

“My mom’s still calling me a fool for making that move,” Van Exel said Tuesday after a workout at the Spurs’ practice facility. “But I don’t regret it at all.”

Even if it turned out a bit differently than he first imagined.

2.After the 2001-02 season, Van Exel simply was trying to escape Denver and play for a winning team. But the only way he could facilitate a trade to Dallas was to turn the guaranteed final year of his contract into a team option. By doing so, he was able to lead the Mavericks to the 2003 Western Conference finals but also ended up being shipped to the Warriors, and then to the Trail Blazers.

3.When Portland declined to pick up the option earlier this summer, Van Exel, 33, became a free agent. And although he knew the Spurs couldn’t offer him more than the one-year, $1.167 million contract he signed Monday, he immediately included them on his wish list.

“You know what you’re going to get (with the Spurs),” Van Exel said. “They win, and they win a lot. That’s the most important thing.”

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who had long been enamored with Van Exel’s basketball skills, said he was especially impressed when Van Exel seemed so excited about playing for the Spurs. In fact, Popovich said signing the 6-foot-1 Van Exel reminded him of another notable veteran Spurs pickup.

“It’s bringing a smaller version of Robert Horry,” Popovich said. “You get an experienced guy who really wants something and can contribute in a specific manner.”

Like Horry, Van Exel is most valued by the Spurs for what he can give them in the postseason. With that in mind, the Spurs will monitor Van Exel’s regular-season minutes much as they have done with Horry to keep him fresh.

“The most important thing is the playoffs,” Van Exel said. “That’s what (Popovich) told me I needed to get ready for.”

Van Exel, who missed 72 games over the past two seasons, said his arthritic left knee feels as healthy as it has in “a year and a half.” He said most of his injury problems in Golden State and Portland were the result of returning too quickly from his last knee surgery.

He received a clean bill of health from the Spurs’ doctors Monday, and that was all Popovich and general manager R.C. Buford needed to hear before offering a contract to a player they think can be a postseason difference-maker.

“Nick relishes taking the big shot, the last shot,” Popovich said. “And that’s a rare quality in a lot of players.”

Popovich wasn’t the only Van Exel admirer in the Spurs’ camp. He said when he mentioned the idea of signing Van Exel, players quickly endorsed it. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Bruce Bowen all met with Van Exel in person Monday.

And as for Duncan’s sales pitch?

“He said, ‘We would love to have you,’” Van Exel said, ‘but we don’t need you.’"

Van Exel took the joke well. In fact, he even made a crack of his own about his image as a difficult teammate.

“Hey,” he said to Popovich on Tuesday, “I’m coachable now.”
