Pacers?

:frowning:

Spurs’ forward to receive the David Robinson Plaque
Bowen Receives Community Assist Award for March

NEW YORK, April 20 – Concerned with the childhood obesity issue in the United States and specifically in San Antonio, the Spurs Bruce Bowen decided to create a healthy lifestyles program for the youth in San Antonio and Bexar County. Bruce recently introduced his idea of the Get Fit with Bruce and Buddy program, a collaboration between him, H-E-B Grocery and the Spurs Foundation. In recognition of his tremendous outreach efforts, Bowen will be honored with the Community Assist Award for March, the NBA announced today.

The Get Fit program, an idea that Bowen came up with during a college public relations class he recently took, recognizes approximately 3,000 elementary school students every season for making sound choices about nutrition and fitness. Physical education teachers are able to nominate students that are making an effort to be more active and/or eat better so that they can be rewarded with Spurs tickets, Get Fit with Bruce and Buddy t-shirts, certificates, lunch sacks and wristbands. H-E-B and the Spurs Foundation donate 40 tickets to every Spurs home game so ten winning kids are able to bring their families to a game. Additionally, Bruce purchased four additional lower level tickets for two specially selected kids known as “Bruce’s Buddies” that he meets with before every home game.

“When a community embraces you and makes you feel like family, it’s only right to try to give back to those who continue to support you through good and bad,” said Bowen.

Committed to holding one Get Fit event every month, Bowen tipped off the school year at Rodriguez Elementary by bringing samples of healthy foods and participating in some physical activities with a class of kids. He hosted some kids at the Children’s Museum where they were taught about how their bodies work in conjunction with food and exercise and he accompanied two separate elementary school classes to H-E-B for their “Be a Healthy Buddy” field trip where nutrition experts gave the kids a tour of the store and taught them how to be nutritious eaters and savvy grocery shoppers. Bowen also dressed as Santa in December to deliver healthy food provided by H-E-B along with Christmas gifts to underprivileged kids and led a surprise morning workout with a class at Woodlawn Hills Elementary. Bowen also plans to hold a Get Fit Festival this summer.

Bowen’s activities in the month of March include holding a Get Fit assembly with 700 kids at Locke Hill Elementary and then taking a brisk walk on the school grounds with seventy-five of those kids who participated in the Get Fit program this season, giving his testimony to over 4,000 fans after a Spurs game at the annual Spurs Fellowship Night and serving as a keynote speaker at the annual San Antonio College Young Women’s/Men’s Conference where he encouraged more than five hundred high school juniors and seniors, many of which are at-risk, to go to college. Bowen also attended the largest Spurs Foundation fundraiser of the year, Tux ‘N Tennies Dinner & Auction, with the rest of his teammates. Bowen sat a “celebrity table” and interacted with fans that evening in hopes of raising funds for the non-profit Spurs Foundation. Bowen also donated his time through one of the Spurs Foundation live auction items. He agreed to give a tour of the Spurs locker room for the high bidder of a live auction package that went for $8,500.

Also, Bowen and his mother created the Bruce Bowen Foundation, which provides scholarships and tuition and helps those less fortunate. One of the Foundation’s major events is a basketball skills camp where Bowen provides instruction, free of charge for youth in his hometown of Fresno, CA. The other major function of the Foundation is to provide college scholarships for high school students in Fresno.

Bruce Bowen joins Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons (February), Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets (January), Shaquille O’Neal of the Miami HEAT (December) and Steven Hunter of the Phoenix Suns (November) as recent winners of the NBA’s Community Assist Award. Other players nominated for the NBA Community Assist Award for the month of March include, Primoz Brezec, of the Charlotte Bobcats, Eric Snow, of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Darius Songaila, of the Sacramento Kings, Chris Bosh of the Toronto Raptors, Stephon Marbury, of the New York Knicks and Willie Green of the Philadelphia 76ers.

As the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award, Bowen will receive the David Robinson Plaque with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece.” During the 2002-03 season, NBA Commissioner David Stern presented former San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson with an honorary plaque and announced that all future winners of the NBA Community Assist Award would receive the David Robinson Plaque. In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 gift will be given to the Bruce Bowen Foundation in his honor.

The NBA Community Assist Award is given out monthly by the league to recognize players for their charitable efforts. The award honors the NBA player who reflects the passion that the league and its players have for their communities.

Peja?

Bibby

JACKSON

Peja? Jeje Jaja…
