Home with heavy heart

CHICAGO - Nazr Mohammed always felt somewhat uncomfortable when his father started bragging to friends and family about his son the basketball player.

“Nazr is being recruited by Kentucky,” Tahiru Abdul Mohammed would say. “He’s going to play for Rick Pitino.”

In the following years, Tahiru Abdul would go on and on about Nazr becoming a starting center, helping the Wildcats to two national championships and developing into a first-round NBA draft pick.

“It was a little embarrassing,” Nazr said. “Even the littlest things he would brag to his friends about. But I know he was proud of me.”

Nazr Mohammed will walk to center court for the opening tipoff today in Chicago, and he knows it is a moment that his father would have enjoyed the most. Just imagine how proud his dad would have been about his son, a starting center for the New York Knicks, following in the footsteps of Willis Reed and Patrick Ewing, facing their beloved Bulls. From the South Side to the big time.

“My only regret is that he never got to see some of the success I’ve had,” Nazr said.

For the past five years, returning home to Chicago has never been the same for Mohammed, whose father was brutally murdered with a baseball bat by an employee at the auto-body shop he owned. Walter Hughes, hired as an act of kindness by the elder Mohammed, was sentenced to 42 years in prison for murder and armed robbery. Tahiru Abdul Mohammed was 55 when died and left behind 11 children.

“I remember exactly where I was when I first heard about my father,” Nazr said. "I was coming back from the Boston Summer League and was in the airport in Cincinnati when my step-sister called me. It was very tough at the time.

“I just knew I had to get home. Something like that catches you completely off guard, to hear that your father is dead. It wasn’t like he was sick. But that guy is in jail for a long time. I went to the sentencing but I didn’t feel justice. The court did as much as it could to give our family justice. But once you take a life there is no justice. There is nothing.”

A likeness of his father is tattooed on Mohammed’s left biceps, and there is another way in which he honors his dad.

“I try to live my life right because I know he is watching me,” he said. “And I don’t want to disappoint him.”

Of course, wanting to make his father proud has long been Mohammed’s driving force. When Mohammed left Kenwood Academy and arrived on the Kentucky campus in 1995, he was a 6-10, 315-pound project. Florida coach Billy Donovan, who was Pitino’s assistant at the time, said his first impression of Mohammed was that he had “no shot” of becoming a serviceable player.

Mohammed lost weight and improved his game. At 27 and in his seventh NBA season, the 250-pound Mohammed is on pace to have a career year. In 35 starts, he is averaging 12.7 points and 9.2 rebounds - both career highs.

When Knicks president Isiah Thomas acquired Mohammed from the Atlanta Hawks 11 months ago in the four-team trade that included Tim Thomas, Keith Van Horn and Michael Doleac, Thomas raised eyebrows when he said he would not have made the deal unless he got Mohammed. Although Mohammed is not in the same class as Shaquille O’Neal or even Zyrdunas Ilgauskas, he has emerged as one of the Knicks’ most consistent players.

Mohammed has improved offensively and he is what coaches like to call a low-maintenance teammate - he doesn’t need the ball to make an impact, never complains and always competes.

“He never takes a play off,” Thomas said. “He really worked hard last summer with (Knicks aides) Mark Aguirre and George Glymph to get better. Now we’re seeing the results.”

Mohammed has already recorded 13 double-doubles (points and rebounds) after posting just six last season. He is a longshot to make the All-Star team but just the fact that his name is being mentioned is an impressive feat for a player who, entering this year, was a career backup.

In Mohammed’s first two seasons in the league he appeared in only 54 games with Philadelphia. But at least his father had the chance to see his son make it.

“I think about him all the time,” Mohammed said. “When I go home I try to visit his grave and say my prayers. It was extremely difficult the way it happened. I mean, that was my pops. He was my strength.”
