>
> Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said the defending Western Conference champions will start their three-guard lineup of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper on Thursday night in the preseason opener against the Atlanta Hawks.
>
> Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell round out the starting five.
>
> Johnson didn’t clarify whether that unit will be on the court when the Spurs tip off the regular season against Oklahoma City on Oct. 20 at the Frost Bank Center.
>
> Asked if fans should read into that lineup as it pertains to the regular season, Johnson said: “I can answer that. They’re still going to read into whatever they want to read into.”
>
> Whether the three guards would play together has been the hot topic since media day on Sept. 28. Fox and Castle started last season while Harper came off the bench, but Harper’s outstanding play in the NBA Finals led to the Spurs exploring the three-guard look they will trot out against the Hawks.
>
> (UPDATE: The Spurs announced before tipoff that Fox would not play after arriving at the arena sore after Thursday morning’s shootaround. With the two-time All-Star sidelined, Julian Champagnie started.)
