> ## Spurs list Tobias Harris as questionable for season opener due to inju
>
> The Spurs could be without their prize offseason acquisition when they open defense of their Western Conference championship.
>
> Veteran forward Tobias Harris is questionable for the regular season opener against Oklahoma City on Oct. 20 due to a left calf strain he sustained last week in training camp, the Spurs announced Sunday before their annual Silver & Black Scrimmage at the Frost Bank Center.
>
> Harris, who watched the scrimmage from the bench in street clothes, will be reevaluated after the five-game preseason, which begins Thursday with a home game against Atlanta and ends against Sacramento on Oct. 16 at the Frost.
>
> “We won’t rush him at all,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “Totally questionable (for the opener) and we will not push that at all. We’ll take it slow. There is no concern of the level of seriousness, and, at the same time, we will not rush him at all.”
>
> The Spurs signed the versatile, rugged 6-foot-8, 230-pound Harris, 34, to a two-year, $31 million contract to bolster their frontcourt, which struggled at times last season matching up against athletic, powerful forwards, including OG Anunoby in the five-game loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
>
> A career 15.6 point-per-game scorer, Harris averaged 13.3 points last season, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists in his 15th NBA campaign as the third-scoring option on a Detroit Pistons squad that won 60 games and entered the playoffs as the East’s top seed.
>
> "He’s been in this league for a long time,” Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said. “He’s averaged 20 points on teams. He’s been in different types of roles. So I think being able to add somebody like him is big for us.”
>
> Harris declared at media day that he and the Spurs were a “perfect match” because they share the same No. 1 goal.
>
> “I have one goal that I would love to accomplish through the rest of my career,” Harris said. “That’s to win a championship. And that’s why I decided to come here and be a part of this group."
>
> Early reviews indicate he is indeed a great fit for the Spurs as they pursue their first NBA crown since 2014.
>
> “His reputation precedes him as a human being and as a player,” Johnson said. "To be able to add something like that with his experience, his resume, who wanted to be here. How could you not be excited?”
>
> Spurs forward Keldon Johnson agreed.
>
> “Tobias has been amazing for us,” the 2026 Sixth Man of the Year said. "He’s a great guy, has that veteran presence. I feel like he’s so stoic and having him around, I feel like he blends right in with the group. I feel like he brings that great energy and I’m glad to have him around.
>
> “I know he’ll be back as soon as possible and we will welcome him back with open arms. What we’ve seen from him so far has been great. He’s been really good for us.”
>
> It’s uncertain what role Mitch Johnson has planned for Harris. Julian Champagnie started at power forward last season.
>
> But Harris made it clear on media day he’s ready to embrace whatever the coaching staff asks him to do.
>
> “It’s a long season, and for me personally, I want to come in every single day and do whatever you can possible do to help the team win as many games as possible and be able to be the last team standing at the end of the day,” he said. “So that’s my role: Every day get myself better, get the team better.”

By Michael C. Wright / ESPN, 2026-10-05 06:47:31

By Marilyn Dubinski / Pounding The Rock, 2026-10-05 07:11:11

> Harris was signed in free agency after averaging 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds for a Detroit Pistons squad that won the East in the regular season before flaming out in the playoffs. He fills arguably the one weakness the Western Conference Champion Spurs had last season, which was size and offensive versatility at the power forward position. The good news is the Spurs can afford to let Harris take his time, as they have plenty of depth at the position with last season’s starter Julian Champagnie, plus Harrison Barnes and Carter Bryant.

By Jared Weiss / The Athletic, 2026-10-05 07:39:40

>
>
>
> SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs will be without Tobias Harris, their key free-agent signing, for the rest of the preseason because of a left calf strain he suffered at training camp, the team announced Sunday. Harris is questionable for San Antonio’s Oct. 20 regular-season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
>
> “It’s a calf strain. The seriousness is what it is,” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said before San Antonio’s intra-squad scrimmage Sunday. “We won’t rush him at all. I guess the question will be is he ready for the season opener? Totally questionable, and we will not push that at all. So, we’ll take it slow. There is no concern of this level of seriousness, and at the same time, we will not rush him at all.”
>
> The 34-year-old Harris signed a two-year, $31 million deal with San Antonio this summer, joining one of the league’s deepest rotations. A key starter for the 60-win Detroit Pistons last season, Harris is expected to compete for a starting four spot with the Spurs. Julian Champagnie, who also signed a long-term deal this offseason, started during the team’s NBA Finals run after replacing Harrison Barnes in January. Devin Vassell has also started at the wing for most of his career in San Antonio and provides a bit more versatility than Champagnie, though he was not quite as potent shooting from deep last season.
>
> Harris presents a different element than the Spurs’ starting wings of last season, as he is a three-level scorer who can coordinate offensive actions himself and brings more size on defense.
>
> The preseason was expected to be a chance for Johnson to experiment with different lineup combinations and figure out where Harris fits into a team with little room for a player of his caliber. The Spurs went with a 10-player rotation most of last season, leaving enough minutes to be split between their five wings: Harris, Champagnie, Vassell, Keldon Johnson and second-year player Carter Bryant. Bryant has the potential to be the starting four down the road, so the team will need to continue to develop him while making Harris a nightly fixture.
>
> Further complicating the rotation is the team’s apparent desire to play its three dynamic point guards together: De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. Johnson has said in the first week of camp that he expects to see more of that trio sharing the floor this season, and they have been working with new lead assistant Billy Donovan to figure out how they can make it work.

By Maxime Aubin à San Antonio (États-Unis) / L’Équipe, 2026-10-05 08:18:17
