Spurs coach Mitch Johnson smiled when a reporter asked him this week about the addition of Billy Donovan to his staff.

“I don’t want to be naive enough to think that I’m going to be able to tell you what a 61-year-old Hall of Fame coach like Billy Donovan and his resume can bring to the table,” Johnson said. “Obviously, I’m very excited he’s here.”

Indeed, Johnson views Donovan as an incredibly valuable resource to have by his side as the Spurs attempt to take the next step toward becoming a championship team.

“He’s a tremendous person, great personality, fits in seamlessly,” Johnson said. “He’s got worlds of experience and he’s an extremely hard worker. He’s not kicking his feet up and telling stories. He’s rolling his sleeves up and getting his hands dirty. So very, very honored and excited to have him here.”

The Spurs added Donovan in the offseason to fill a vacancy created when associate head coach and defensive mastermind Sean Sweeney left the Spurs following their run to the NBA Finals to become coach of the Orlando Magic, a job Donovan reportedly also pursued.

In Donovan, the Spurs gave Johnson a top lieutenant with a wealth of experience as a head coach, including spending the past 11 seasons guiding NBA teams (the last five years with the Chicago Bulls after six seasons with Oklahoma City Thunder for a 469-413 overall record) and a 19-year stint guiding the Florida Gators from 1996 to 2015 highlighted by winning national championships in 2006 and 2007.

Donovan also guided Florida to an NCAA title game appearance in 2000 and a total of four Final Four appearances. The highlight of his pro coaching career came when Oklahoma City reached the 2016 Western Conference finals in his first season there.

Donovan’s hiring by the Spurs came after critics hammered Johnson, 39, for some of his decisions during the postseason, including several against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, which the Spurs lost in five games after blowing double-digit leads in each of their losses.

“He’s going to help all of us and me probably specifically a ton this year,” Johnson said.

Donovan to eye guard dilemma: Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox said Donovan is expected to aid Johnson in his efforts to figure out how to best use himself and fellow guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

“One thing we’ve talked about is him being able to coach three guards at the same time,” Fox said. “When he was in OKC, he had Dennis (Schroder), Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) and CP (Chris Paul), so he’s been able to make it work. That team wasn’t supposed to go to the playoffs at the time and then ended up playing well throughout the course of the season because they figured it out. And that’s one thing he’s bringing to us.”

The team Fox referred to, the 2019-20 Thunder, finished fifth in the Western Conference with a 44-28 record in a pandemic-shortened season with Gilgeous-Alexander averaging 19.0 points, Schroder 18.9 and Paul 17.6 before losing to Houston in seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

“Us three didn’t play a lot together (last season), but in the Finals (against New York), towards the end of the games, we started playing more together,” Fox said of himself, Castle and Harper.

“We know we’re going to play together this year,” Fox added.

Castle welcomes push-off crack down: As an elite defender, Castle was asked for his thoughts on the league instructing its referees to crack down this season on offensive players who use their arms to push off against defensive players.

“We’ve got to make sure the defensive side of the ball does not get penalized by allowing illegal acts by the offensive player,” Monty McCutchen, the NBA’s senior vice president of referee development and training, said in a conference call last month, per ESPN. "I think we can do a better job.

The crack down comes after NBA teams averaged 115.6 points last season, the highest mark since the 1969-70 season.

“I think it’s beneficial to the defense, giving them more of a chance to get contest on shots and probably stop stronger players from getting in certain spots when you beat them there,” said Castle, who was just four voting points shy of gaining a spot on the 2025-26 NBA All-Defensive Second Team by just four voting points. “I don’t think it’ll change too much in the league, but I feel like it’ll definitely help defenders, especially late clock.”
