Victor Wembanyama could have signed an extension worth $302 million, and instead chose to help the Spurs out by signing one for $252 million, and it made me think of this Chappelle explanation of giant dollar amounts.
Victor Wembanyama has just signed a 5-year, $252M maximum rookie-scale extension with the Spurs, including a player option in Year 5. The 22-year-old opted for the standard max rather than supermax escalators, locking in the franchise cornerstone through his prime and giving San

Champagnie’s agents, Nick Blatchford and Derek Jackson, put the final touches on a deal with San Antonio executives with a unique structure that gets him paid early – rewarded $42M in new money – and provides the Spurs some flexibility.
An integral agreement for the 6-foot-7 forward who has provided floor-spacing and leadership around Victor Wembanyama and the team’s talented guards.
Billy Donovan has agreed to become the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs and head coach Mitch Johnson, sources tell me and @ PeteThamel. After 11 seasons as a head coach in Chicago and Oklahoma City, Donovan accepts the position with the Western Conference champions.
Wemby’s maximum contract extension amount if he qualifies for the 30% max (Based on cap projection of $174,034,000)
Year 1 = $52,210,200
Year 2 = $56,387,016
Year 3 = $60,563,832
Year 4 = $64,740,648
Year 5 = $68,917,464
If he does not qualify for the 30% max (AKA he doesn’t play 65 games) it will be:
Year 1 = $43,508,500
Year 2 = $46,989,180
Year 3 = $50,469,860
Year 4 = $53,950,540
Year 5 = $57,431,220
LeBron James & Victor Wembanyama talk about the importance of the offseason:
: “I never want to put myself in a position where I came into a season unprepared. You know, so, I’ve always used the offseason to critique my game more than anybody. There’s not a coach, there’s not an analyst, there’s not anybody in the world that can critique my game or critique the way I want to prepare better than myself.”
: “Offseason for me is when you separate from the others. When all the work goes unnoticed, and it’s your chance to do things others don’t, the work others don’t put in.”
Ja’Kobi Gillespie on the interaction he had with the Spurs pre-draft:
“I had a workout with them, it went really well. They told me they really liked me and were considering drafting me. So for them to take the chance on me is a great feeling.
Even though it is called a max deal, in reality, Victor is giving up just over $50 million to help the organization in the future. He was a guaranteed lock to reach the Supermax escalators instead turned it down for the guaranteed 25%.
The total Wemby will have given up over 5 years (including raises) is 29% of whatever next years cap ends up being. As of right now, that’s a projected $50,469,860 saved over 5 seasons.
Victor Wembanyama has passed up on the full 30% supermax to take the 5-year, $252 million standard max and open up flexibility for a Spurs org that will need to pay Steph Castle and Dylan Harper down the road.
