> Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, on what went wrong in Game 4: “We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half.” > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama after a Game 4 collapse: “It was painful, of course. It feels like we worked too hard and gave up our lead. It’s as simple as that. It just hurts.” > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, on his missed free throws late in Game 4: “You might work for hours and hours, at the end of the day, it’s just a shot. You need to shoot it the normal way.” > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, on picking up a flagrant foul and being one away from suspension: “Of course I’m going to be more careful, but it’s not going to change much.” ![San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) looks down toward the court during the fourth quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Knicks defeated the Spurs 107-106, leading the series 3-1._ > > NEW YORK — Unmitigated heartbreak. > > That’s what happened to the Spurs in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday. > > A historic blown lead, several squandered opportunities down the stretch and a last-second [tip-in by O.G. Anunoby that will live in New York sports lore](https://www.expressnews.com/sports/spurs/article/how-knicks-og-anunoby-scored-game-winning-bucket-22300098.php) dealt the Spurs a gut-wrenching 107-106 defeat that could cost them their title hopes. > > “We’re all human,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “It hurts.” > > With a chance to even the series, the Spurs led by as many as 29 points in the first half, frittered away all of it with as bad a second half as they could possibly play, and ultimately stood helpless as Anunoby tapped in a Jalen Brunson misfire with 2.1 seconds left to move the Knicks one game away from the NBA championship. > > Instead of heading back to San Antonio for Saturday’s Game 5 with the series tied, the Spurs face elimination. > > The Knicks, meanwhile, are ahead in the series 3-1 and on the brink of their first title since 1973. Brunson threw in 36 points, while Anunoby added 33. Anunoby made 7 of 9 from 3-point range. His biggest basket, however, came from right near the rim as he swooped in to steal the game — and possibly a championship — from the Spurs’ grasp. > > > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, on what went wrong in Game 4: “We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half.” [pic.twitter.com/37SNpeeIER](https://t.co/37SNpeeIER) > > > > — Spurs Nation (@ Spurs\_Nation) [June 11, 2026](https://x.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2064922120744837229?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > > > https://hub.chinaspurs.com/v?url=https%3A%2F%2Fx.com%2FSpurs_Nation%2Fstatus%2F2064922120744837229%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw&key=ca8b3302 > > Spurs coach Mitch Johnson used one adjective to describe the defeat: “Painful.” > > “That’s a game where you sit there and you say you had the type of personnel that you had, you shot the ball decent, played a pretty clean game,” Johnson said. “Then kind of didn’t finish the job.” > > For the Knicks, all it took was the largest rally in NBA Finals history. > > “We know it’s a game of runs,” Anunoby said. “We’re a resilient group. We’ve been through a lot. We’ve come back plenty of times when we’re behind.” > > The Spurs made 15 of their 23 shots in the first quarter, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range, to jump out to the early lead and silence the Madison Square Garden crowd. > > With 3:06 remaining before halftime, the Spurs went up 71-42 on a Dylan Harper layup. By halftime, the Spurs led 76-49. > > It all unraveled slowly at first, and then all of a sudden. > > As hot as they were in the first half, they were that cold in the second, managing only 30 points after intermission. > > The Spurs were clinging to dear life heading to the final minute and a half. Brunson gave New York its first lead of the game on a scoop shot with 38.8 seconds to go. > > On the other end, Stephon Castle drew a foul on an offensive rebound and made a pair of foul shots to put the Spurs back on top, 106-105. > > It ended up being the second-most consequential rebound of the game. > > Down to their last possession, the Knicks put the ball in Brunson’s hands. He fired up a quick 3-pointer that bounced high off the rim. > > Had the Spurs secured the rebound, they would have won the game. Instead, Anunoby soared through the lane and into Knicks lore. > > “I don’t know if there was a play bigger than any other play in the history in Knicks basketball,” New York coach Mike Brown said. > > If the Knicks go on to bring a championship parade to Manhattan, Brown will be proven correct. Here are three takeaways from the Spurs’ narrow Game 4 defeat: > > ### **1. Fox’s decision proves costly** > > The Spurs could have put the game away before New York’s last possession, after De’Aaron Fox grabbed a loose rebound of a Brunson miss with 16.1 seconds remaining and the Spurs ahead by one. > > Had Fox pulled the ball out, ran clock and waited to be fouled, he would have had a chance to put the Spurs ahead by three. > > Fox had other ideas. > > > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama after a Game 4 collapse: “It was painful, of course. It feels like we worked too hard and gave up our lead. It’s as simple as that. It just hurts.” [pic.twitter.com/LNqbGmm5mC](https://t.co/LNqbGmm5mC) > > > > — Spurs Nation (@ Spurs\_Nation) [June 11, 2026](https://x.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2064921047585976599?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > > > https://hub.chinaspurs.com/v?url=https%3A%2F%2Fx.com%2FSpurs_Nation%2Fstatus%2F2064921047585976599%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw&key=edf70c4d > > “I just thought I’d be able to outrun them,” Fox said. > > Anunoby had other ideas. In another big play that typified his night, Anunoby erased Fox’s attempt with a block, setting the stage for his own game-winning putback at the other end. > > ### **2. Wembanyama was out of gas in crunch time** > > Wembanyama logged 44 minutes Wednesday, his most in the playoffs outside the 49 he played in the double-overtime victory at Oklahoma City that kicked off the Western Conference finals. > > By the end of those 44 minutes, Wembanyama was clearly on fumes. > > After scoring 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting in the first half, Wembanyama went 3 of 14 in the second. He was a step slow on many of his defensive rotations and contests in the fourth quarter. Uncharacteristically, he missed a pair of free throws down the stretch. > > > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, on his missed free throws late in Game 4: “You might work for hours and hours, at the end of the day, it’s just a shot. You need to shoot it the normal way.” [pic.twitter.com/lg5lvf9606](https://t.co/lg5lvf9606) > > > > — Spurs Nation (@ Spurs\_Nation) [June 11, 2026](https://x.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2064922566347637011?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > > > https://hub.chinaspurs.com/v?url=https%3A%2F%2Fx.com%2FSpurs_Nation%2Fstatus%2F2064922566347637011%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw&key=f2e8a7e3 > > Wembanyama finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, but struggled down the stretch. Asked if the heavy workload left him feeling worn down, Wembanyama answered in the affirmative. > > “Yeah, I guess I did,” Wembanyama said. > > In retrospect, Mitch Johnson might have considered giving Wembanyama more of a breather in the first half, when the Spurs’ lead was in the 20s. > > He elected to go for the jugular instead. > > It backfired. > > “With two days (off) after this, what was at stake, we wanted to win the game and try to put it away,” Johnson said. > > ### **3. Wemby’s flagrant foul adds to Spurs’ concerns** > > On top of everything else the Spurs have working against them heading into Game 5, now they must worry about Wembanyama’s errant elbows. > > Wembanyama was assessed a flagrant-1 foul after accidentally catching New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns in the face with an elbow early in the third quarter. > > Combined with the flagrant-2 foul Wembanyama received in Game 4 of the Spurs’ second-round series with Minnesota for popping Naz Reid in the throat with another elbow, the All-Star center has been assessed three flagrant points during the postseason. > > > Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, on picking up a flagrant foul and being one away from suspension: “Of course I’m going to be more careful, but it’s not going to change much.” [pic.twitter.com/PjqCIwvVRX](https://t.co/PjqCIwvVRX) > > > > — Spurs Nation (@ Spurs\_Nation) [June 11, 2026](https://x.com/Spurs_Nation/status/2064922726192607688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) > > > > https://hub.chinaspurs.com/v?url=https%3A%2F%2Fx.com%2FSpurs_Nation%2Fstatus%2F2064922726192607688%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw&key=24b45e08 > > One more results in an automatic suspension. In Game 5, Wembanyama will have to mind his Ps and Qs — and his elbows. > > Of course, if the Spurs lose on Saturday their season is over and none of it matters.
