>
> The San Antonio Spurs had the New York Knicks dead to rights with a 29 point lead, but failed to close the show and have fallen into a 3-1 hole in the Finals. This is now the biggest comeback in Finals history, surpassing the Boston Celtics’ 24-point comeback against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2008. The offense loosing its force doomed them and they suffered one of the worst fourth-quarter collapses in Finals history. The series shifts back to San Antonio and they will attempt to do what only the Cleveland Cavaliers did in 2016.
>
> Part of the problem was the team got satisfied with their work while the Knicks remained desperate and they were too late to prevent a tsunami when trying to flip the switch. Victor Wembanyama (24 points on 36 percent shooting) went berserk in the first quarter, but laid a stack of bricks the rest of the game, which included missing a pair of big freebies with fewer than two minutes left. The rest of the team folded in key moments as well.
>
> ### Observations
>
> - The offense was forced to take too many jumpers late in the game as New York’s pressure tightened up. For a while, the team was playing tight and everyone seemed reluctant to take the big shot, until De’Aaron Fox hit one, but folded on the next one. It appeared they were going to be bailed out by Stephon Castle’s late freebies, but Fox took a quick shot on the break instead of holding the ball when the Spurs were up. OG Anunoby hit the game-winning tip-in on the next possession.
> - The defense was a bit exuberant, allowing too many free throws, but the Knicks were working extra hard to find shots in the half court, yet they eventually resorted to Brunson and OG Anunoby or bust. That ended up working and tore up the Spurs in the second half.
> - Devin Vassell’s 3-point shooting injected life into the Spurs and was contagious because the others followed his lead. Eighteen of the team’s first 32 points came from 3-pointers, and this had the Knicks shaky until halftime. Additionally, the Spurs logged 14 first-half treys, which is the most in their playoff run. They then shot 18.8 percent from deep in the second half.
> - Wembanyama went at Towns when he picked up his second foul in 62 seconds, and even baited Robinson into elbowing him in the jaw, causing a flagrant one; it had a big swing late in the first quarter and helped them take their biggest lead of the series (21) to that point. The Knicks coverages were later a factor in slowing Wemby down, but he also played tight the rest of the way.
> - Naturally, quality teams at home in the playoffs come out thundering at halftime when facing a large deficit. A rough third quarter followed as the Spurs gave up a 10-5 run by the first substitution and it got worse from there. They committed five turnovers, shot 20 percent in the period and at one point had made only three field goals after nine minutes. The Spurs played the second half in the mud and missed many open shots.
> - The Spurs’ bench outscored New York’s by 16, and Dylan Harper deserves most of the credit for that. He was too fast for whoever was in front of him, and he nailed baskets in big moments when they team need a boost. He had one of the great performances by a youngster this late in the playoffs that will be forgotten because of the loss.

This leaves an extremely young and playoff inexperienced team, especially Wemby, trying to fight through utter exhaustion to finish out incredibly stess-packed games, and that’s asking way too much of them. Mitch needs to have a Barnes/Kornet pairing soak up some minutes because he’s running Victor into the ground right now, and furthermore Barnes’ size might bother Anunoby at least a little bit, which is critical because O.G. is just killing us right now.

Since all these games were determined in final minute we are seeing it play out more and more every game. To see it play out yet again in this game was shocking. He seems like a very bright kid which why it’s perplexing to see his poor decision making in big moments and end of game decisions. I guess can blame it on inexperience plus bad coaching? I don’t think the game has fully slowed down yet for Wemby, particularly in late game situations. The good news is that he does not shy away from taking big shots. Like the regular season, though, we were able to ride on talent most of the way, save for Pop coming in to save the day between games when we needed to make a major adjustment. Other than those Pop interventions, it hasn’t seemed like Mitch Johnson has the capacity or interest in managing games, adjusting between games, running an offense that emphasizes our best player getting in the paint, and is content to just let a group of 20 year olds figure it out on their own.
> >
> > We have seen it dozens of times this year, and all the “he’ll figure it out!” cautionary replies have been exercises in blind faith that have not paid off. Our team won 62 games due to talent, not coaching. And while Mitch staying out of the way may have aided in an impressive regular season record, I don’t see how continuing to do so in a 7 game series is a viable path, when the opposing coach gameplans for you and only you, and makes adjustments.
> >
> > Our offense looks lost and without direction. We come out of halves looking like a completely different team — not just tonight, but SEVERAL times this year. We get big leads because, again, talent, but then lose them because Mitch refuses to manage the gameplan. When we come out flat, instead of taking the reins and imposing a scheme that incorporates the thing that got us those leads, he sits back and watches as we settle for 3’s, stand around the perimeter, and let the same guys hit dagger after dagger on the other end. It is fucking infuriating.
> >
> > Mitch is Pop’s guy, so he’ll never do anything about this. Not unless Victor says something. And I hope he does. I like Mitch’s disposition, but my god. How many obvious mistakes have we seen him make — leaving Fox in the lineups, leaving Harper out of them, letting the other team get hot before calling time out, pulling our guys when they’re hot, not getting Vic involved in the offense — only to repeat those mistakes by failing to adjust? Is he even coaching this team, or is Pop? We went down 2 games to OKC before Pop spoke to the team, leading Mitch to finally realize the importance of putting Wemby in the paint on offense. An adjustment was made, and we won. Then, the next game, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. As if Mitch learned NOTHING from the game before. We went down two games in _this_ series…then FINALLY made the adjustment, won, and should’ve won again before Mitch once again strayed from that plan in the second half.

Instead, he chose to drive with Anunoby lurking from behind. I thought he was gonna milk the clock and I was surprised that he went for the lame layup. He’s a veteran. I expected more from him. Manu was in that situation many times years back and he always had that high basketball IQ of dribbling out the clock. NY was in the penalty. For sure, he could’ve shot free throws.
> > Even if the momentum has shifted in favor of NY, there was still a chance to get the W. Wemby missed on both of his clutch free throws with 1:47 left. Those are huge. Prior to that, his aggressiveness was gone and only settled for 3s. Again, why does he need to drive against two small defenders when he’s widely open to shoot the midrange.
> > 17/43 from the 3-point line43/86 FGImagine half of their shots came from 3. They lived and died by the three. Why would they keep on shooting from three when the shots clearly weren’t falling in the 2nd half? NY was already in the penalty. They could have taken advantage of that by driving down the lane. They have 3 guards who love to go downhill. They went away from what was working. The lineup is always 4 guards and a center but the latter is always in the perimeter guarding smaller players. No one’s guarding the paint. Brunson took advantage of that and always went for the drive because there was no Wemby to contest his shot. Also, they only scored 20 points in the second half. Being the only team that took a 27-point lead in the half is nothing when you’re also the same team that gave it up and choked . This is on Mitch Johnson.
