https://www.facebook.com/reel/2779371522439415

A fan runs out onto the court to take a selfie during Game 1 of the NBA Finals at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

The fan who ran onto the court midway through the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday night at the Frost Bank Center was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas, a league spokesperson announced Thursday morning.

The fan attempted to take a selfie with Spurs star Victor Wembanyama before two security staffers grabbed him and rushed him off the court. The incident briefly stopped play before the New York Knicks went on to defeat the Spurs 105-95 before a sellout crowd of 18,835.

A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident, the league spokesperson said.

Derrick Howard, executive director of Bexar County Community Arenas, which oversees the Frost Bank Center, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Bexar County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said information identifying the person who ran onto the court cannot be released because the incident involves a juvenile.

In a statement Thursday, the sheriff’s office said the juvenile ran onto the court during the fourth quarter, breached court security, approached Wembanyama and used a cellphone to take a photo with him. Court security staff immediately detained the juvenile, removed him from the court and placed him in custody, the statement said.

The sheriff’s office said the incident delayed the game, requiring referees to stop play and confer with coaching staff.

The juvenile was arrested on allegations of disrupting a meeting or procession and criminal trespass, according to the sheriff’s office. The disruption allegation stems from the juvenile intentionally disrupting the game through physical interference, the sheriff’s office said. The criminal trespass allegation stems from the juvenile entering the court without consent, despite notice that entry was prohibited, according to the sheriff’s office.

A Bexar County court source said the case was later being handled as a non-arrest matter. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors had accepted the allegations.

If filed, both offenses could carry misdemeanor penalties. Criminal trespass is generally a Class B misdemeanor in Texas, punishable by up to 180 days in jail, a fine of up to $2,000, or both. A disruption-related charge filed under the state’s law against disrupting a meeting, procession or gathering is also a Class B misdemeanor carrying the same maximum penalties.

A Bexar County Sheriff’s Office source with knowledge of the incident said the juvenile is believed to be from outside San Antonio and that the stunt may have been intended to draw attention to a website. The source did not disclose the juvenile’s age or identify the website.

The fan, holding a cellphone in his right hand, ran onto the court with 6:28 left and the Knicks leading 92-86.

Replays of the incident showed Wembanyama smiling while looking at the fan while the New York player defending him, Mitchell Robinson, stared at the phone.

“I’ve never been in that situation,” Wembanyama said. “I didn’t know how to act. It really surprised me, almost as much as that time (when) a bat crossed the court.”

Wembanyama was referring to a game against Minnesota on Jan. 27, 2024 at the Frost Bank Center, when a bat disrupted play two minutes into the game by buzzing the court.

Spurs superfan Mark Burnett posted a video recording from the point of view of the person who attempted to take a selfie on the court. It’s unknown how he obtained the footage. https://www.facebook.com/reel/2779371522439415

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson didn’t spend much time responding to a reporter’s question about the fan incident.

“I don’t think it was an event at all,” Johnson said. “I thought security got him out of there. I think everybody moved on to the next play.”

The fan was rushed off the court and taken through a baseline tunnel that led toward the NBA’s interview areas.
