(Devin Vassell)

(Keldon Johnson)

(De’Aaron Fox)

San Antonio Spurs dressed to beat the Heat, make history this week

In an exclusive series of interviews with the Express-News, three team members discussed how their clothing and unique personal style choices translate into the game.
Before beating the Heat and officially setting the record for the franchise’s first-ever five-win start to a season, the San Antonio Spurs players started off their days just like everyone else — by putting their pants on one leg at a time.
From the closet to the court, the Spurs spent every step of the way getting their heads in the game.
In an exclusive series of interviews with the Express-News, three team members discussed how their clothing and unique personal style choices translate into the game, and how feeling like a million bucks can sometimes mean playing like a million bucks.
Devin Vassell

When it comes to the game, Vassell says his no-nonsense style doesn’t just apply to his drip, but to his play as well.
If Vassell had only three words to describe his personal sense of style, it would be “chill,” “comfortable” and “cozy” — three things he couldn’t seem to get enough of when getting dressed for practice Wednesday morning ahead of the record-breaking game.
“I got on some baggy sweat pants from Gallery Dept., a hoodie and some Uggs, just something cozy,” he said. “It was a little crisp breeze outside so I said ‘Yeah, let me protect these toes today.’”
When it comes to the game, Vassell says his no-nonsense style doesn’t just apply to his drip, but to his play as well.
“My fits aren’t usually too loud, and on the court I’m not a very loud person,” he told the Express-News. “I think I’m very straight to the point, and when I play basketball it’s very straight to the point, so they kind of resemble each other.”
Keldon Johnson

“I grew up in a small town in South Hill, Virginia,” Johnson said, noting how the Vaquero and Tejano culture in San Antonio helped him feel closer to his roots.
As the self-identified cowboy of the team, Johnson had no trouble wrangling up three words to describe his sense of style: “Wild, wild west.”
“I grew up in a small town in South Hill, Virginia,” Johnson said, noting how the Vaqueroand Tejano culture in San Antonio helped him feel closer to his roots.
“Mom’s side (of the family) had a farm, cattle and things like that. We would go there every Thanksgiving and with all my cousins and go see them,” he told the Express-News. “Just being here in San Antonio made me feel at home … the cowboy part just kind of took over.”
Johnson’s typical drip consists of a few key pieces: “A lot of people like the cowboy outfits, but for me it’s just everyday because I live on a ranch. So boots, a hat,” he said.
“My favorite pair of boots is probably from Cody James. Lucchese makes some great boots as well, but theirs are more like, fashion. For every day I’ll wear something more comfortable … to go around, and you don’t have to worry about your feet hurting or anything like that.”
De’Aaron Fox

When it comes to his style both on and off the court, De’Aaron Fox says he likes to keep it classy.
When it comes to his style both on and off the court, De’Aaron Fox says he likes to keep it classy: “I’d say clean, elegant and traditional,” he told the Express-News when describing his personal sense of style.
Although he denies that his sense of style has any influence over his game, it seems like his sense of clean, traditional elegance translates from the closet to the court. Although, he says it’s taken some work.
“I think my game has developed over the years,” he said. “I was mostly (focused on) like speed, athleticism, and I definitely think I’ve kind of toned it down a little bit playing with more pace.”
