> # Poised to dish out milestone assist, Paul filled with gratitude
>
> Five years ago while with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chris Paul experienced a moment of uncertainty after studying the NBA career leaders for assists.
>
> “It was like, 'Man, you going to play long enough to do that?” he said of his goal of occupying one of the top spots on the prestigious list.
>
> The answer turned out to be a resounding yes.
>
> When the Spurs host the New Orleans Pelicans — the franchise Paul started with as the fourth-overall pick in 2005 — on Sunday, his years of playmaking excellence will be in the spotlight as he is poised to leapfrog Jason Kidd into the No. 2 all-time spot.
>
> After finishing with 13 assists to go along with 11 points and eight rebounds in a near triple-double performance in the Spurs’ 140-113 loss to Sacramento on Friday night, Paul has a career total of 12,089, leaving him just three shy of passing Kidd.
>
> John Stockton holds the record with 15,806.
>
> “I remember being a rookie, looking up in Utah seeing John Stockton ‘all-time steals and assists leader’. So, yeah, it is kind of crazy,” Paul said when asked if what he is about to accomplish has sunk in yet.
>
> Especially when he knows some people counted him out a while ago.
>
> “I’m grateful for the opportunity to still continue to play,” he said. “It has been so many, he’s done here, he’s done there, you know what I mean? So, I think it’s a lot of gratitude. And if that (passing Kidd) happens, I’ll be grateful.”
>
> At 39, Paul knows that the 2022 All-Star Game may have been his last, meaning he will end his career with 12 appearances. The same goes for being a member of the NBA All-Defensive Team, something he’s accomplished nine times, with the last coming after the 2016-17 season.
>
> But in the midst of his 20th season, his clairvoyance on the court remains, giving the impression he could roll out of bed at 50 or older and still find the open man.
>
> “He sees stuff before it’s even open,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “He’ll tell us to do certain stuff before we even think that it’s open. He’ll tell Jeremy (Sochan) to roll, and he’ll be wide open.”
>
> Paul recently shared a secret about his ability to see into the future.
>
> “I listen to the defense,” he said. “They tell you what they’re going to do.”
>
> At the start of play Saturday, Paul was tied with James Harden for fifth in the league in assists per game with 8.5 after dishing out 195 in 23 games, all of which he started.
>
> Paul has never finished outside of the top 13 in assists in his career. He’s led the league in the category three times and has finished second four times. This season could mark his fifth in a row placing in the top 10.
>
> As far as the career rankings for assists in the playoffs, Paul is fifth with 1,233 just behind Kidd, who has 1,263.
>
> Paul is also one of just seven players in NBA history to surpass 10,000 career assists. LeBron James and Paul are the only two players in league annals with more than 20,000 points and 10,000-plus assists.
>
> They also share this: They command the respect of everybody in the NBA.
>
> “What sticks out to me the most is just obviously he’s a great playmaker, a great player, but just his fricking leadership,” Kings coach Mike Brown said. “When I think of Chris Paul, I just think ultimate leader, ultimate competitor.”
>
> Standing just 6 foot, Paul doesn’t rank among the most athletically gifted of the all-time greats, but his intelligence, vision and drive are right up there.
>
> “He may get mad at me for saying this, but I might be a little quicker than him maybe,” Brown said. “But, oh, my gosh, you talk about one of the all- time greats and him maximizing every single ounce that he could from his body and his brain. Unfreaking believable to me. When you say Chris Paul, yeah, that’s the ultimate, ultimate competitor at the highest freaking level.”
>
> Like Vassell, Brown marvels at Paul’s ability to direct traffic and stay “three steps ahead of everybody.”
>
> “That’s how Jason Kidd was,” Brown said. “But Kidd was quicker than Paul. He was bigger than Paul. So, he had a little bit of a physical advantage over CP that CP had to make up for with his determination and his mindset.”
>
> As a former point guard at Stanford, Spurs interim coach Mitch Johnson has a great appreciation for the way Paul turns what he sees on the court into execution.
>
> “I feel like I could see things and not do it, so to be able to see someone that can do some of the things that I feel like I may see is pretty cool,” Johnson said.
>
> Paul never stops talking once he steps foot on the court. And it’s not a stretch to say he is in near complete control of his surroundings.
>
> “He has an ability to manipulate and deceive and dictate and empower everybody on the court, his teammates, the opposition, the refs, people watching the game,” Johnson said. "It’s a skill and he’s done it for a long time.
>
> “And for a young coach like myself, it’s helpful and also something I’m actually learning from in a weird way on the fly as well.”
>
> The Spurs signed Paul to a one-year contract in July worth $11 million. With him also averaging 10.4 points and a team-best 1.4 steals while shooting 35.3% from 3-point range, there’s already been talk among observers about whether the Spurs would make a pitch to keep him beyond this season.
>
> If his teammates had a vote, they likely would be in agreement that the player they affectionately call “unc” should stick around.
>
> “The way he takes care of his body and approaches the game every day, it’s going to help a lot of us, a lot of our young guys to mold them into the players that they need to be,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “Just watching him take care of his body, his preparation day in, day out, how he knows everybody on the (scouting report), he’s a pro, a pro’s pro and we appreciate him for everything.”
>
> Paul said his family will be on hand at the Frost Bank Center in anticipation of him dishing out his milestone assist. After he receives congratulations from all corners on the court, he will go back in an instance to doing what he does best: Setting up his teammates for buckets.
>
> “I am grateful,” he said. “To not only still be here, but playing and playing at a high level. It’s fun.”
