Call a Doc? If the Spurs keep it up
If I’m Peter Holt, I’m thinking Gregg Popovich survived his first must-win. Had he lost to the Clippers - at home and on the anniversary of the Bob Hill beheading - there would have been no saving him.
But the must-win moment says something by itself. If I’m Holt, I start looking for a way out.
If I’m Holt, I see a team that doesn’t show any sign of changing, not unless Johnnie Cochran convinces an arbitrator that Mark Fuhrman placed those scratches on P.J. Carlesimo’s neck and frees Latrell Sprewell. I see a franchise that needs time but can’t afford any. I see TV stations taking fan polls already about Popovich’s future and I see call-in shows light up.
How does Holt, an NBA outsider who has leaned on Popovich, go about finding Popovich’s replacement?
The expensive answer usually sits a few rows from Holt at courtside. The funny thing about Doc Rivers: The franchise has never been the same since he left.
Rivers would laugh at that, and then smartly maneuver as he once did on the court. He has too good a deal now to commit to anything. TV gives him a chance to earn a half mil while playing golf and seeing a lot of his kids. Yelling at Sean Elliott every day would cut into that.
Besides, Rivers no doubt realizes what Popovich has to work with. High-level expectations and low-level talent. These aren’t the Spurs of two years ago, even if a lot of names remain. Elliott was then an All-Star, now he’s not tradeable. Chuck Person and Will Perdue were magnificent sharing the big-forward spot, now Person shoots 26 percent and Perdue can’t get on the floor.
And always forgotten in this discussion is Rivers. Popovich brings Monty Williams as his first guard off the bench. Hill brought a smart, rugged man who didn’t make mistakes.
Rivers’ back went out in the middle of the series sweep of Phoenix. Is it only coincidence that the Spurs were humiliated in the next round against Utah, collapsed to an all-time low the next season and struggle now?
Popovich knows this better than anyone; the same GM who couldn’t find anyone to replace Rivers is the same GM who signed him. So Popovich exchanges flawed pieces and waits.
But Popovich works against a timetable he created partly by winning Duncan in the lottery, and mostly because of what he did with Hill. If I’m Holt, I’m probably feeling the way the fans feel. Shouldn’t the Duncan-Robinson Spurs at least be competitive in Houston? Don’t be surprised if the minority owners have already approached Holt.
Holt doesn’t want this. He doesn’t want to spend the money, and he sure doesn’t want to wade into an area he doesn’t know.
But sitting nearby, talking into a mike, is a safe alternative. Rivers lives in San Antonio, knows San Antonio, knows the Spurs. The players would like him, as would the fans. He would get a half- season to learn on the job, which is what the franchise needs anyway.
Rivers would demand a few things, since he would have leverage. Two teams have already approached him about next year. And under these dynamics, he might very well want Popovich kicked back upstairs.
This also means signing Rivers would cost new-age coaching money. It would have to be lucrative for Rivers to ask out of his TV deal.
Holt has said the money isn’t there. But if the issue in this town becomes the price of a ticket instead of the price of an arena - if the Spurs need a charmer and a strategist and a new reason to inspire - how can Holt afford not to sign Rivers?
If I’m Holt, I thinking that right now.
