For Spurs, injuries still the fasion - Elliott, latest in best- dressed troop, hopes to return before season’s end
Injured Spurs forward Sean Elliott vowed Thursday that he will try his best to return to action before the end of the regular season. But in the meantime, Elliott playfully predicted he would be the best-dressed of all on the team’s ``Fashion Row.‘’
``Oh, it’ll be me, no question,‘’ Elliott said on the eve of tonight’s 7:30 game at the Alamodome against the Golden State Warriors.
It was a challenge that could make other injured Spurs shudder.
For most of the season, David Robinson and other wounded players have looked sharp at home games, dressed in custom-tailored suits.
Elliott, beset with chronic tendinitis in his right quadriceps all season, learned three days ago that he might be joining Robinson and the others on ``Fashion Row’’ for an extended period.
Spurs team physician Dr. David Schmidt advised Elliott on Monday that surgery was a possibility. Subsequently, the team sent its starting small forward to the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Inglewood, Calif., for confirmation of the opinion.
After meeting with Dr. Clarence Shields on the West Coast Wednesday, Elliott learned that the operation and a six-to-eight-week rehabilitation was imminent. The surgery will be performed by Schmidt. It has been scheduled for next Tuesday in San Antonio.
``I’m not looking at this as the end of my season,‘’ Elliott said.
Many fans aren’t so optimistic about the team’s season as a whole. They see it as the last hit for the bedraggled Spurs (12-35), who lagged 7 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference standings before Thursday night’s games.
In Elliott’s absence, the Spurs have gone 1-7 this year. Robinson (broken bone, left foot), Chuck Person (back surgery) and Charles Smith (osteoarthritis, right knee) are all still on the mend, with no certain timetable set for their return.
Hopefully, Dave and Chuck will be able to come back and maybe I'll be able to come back,'' Elliott said.
They’re not saying I’m out for the rest of the year. They’re just saying I gotta get this done.‘’
Elliott said the doctor will take out a damaged piece of the tendon and then sew it back together.
Both doctors stressed this is (best) for the long run,'' he said.
They said you’re going to get this done. It’s going to make you better. (They said) you’ll get back and (it will) also make you better down the road.‘’
The Spurs have other problems going into the game with the Warriors (18-29), who beat Dallas 107-99 Thursday night. Center Will Perdue might not play after turning his ankle Wednesday in a 106-101 loss to the Vancouver Grizzlies.
But the major focus a day later was the long-term ramifications of Elliott’s injury.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, 3-15 in his last 18 games, initially called the injury ``a killer’’ as far as how it could affect the team. His thoughts Thursday swerved to Elliott, and how he thought Elliott could return to form after the rehabilitation.
The doctors expect full recovery,'' Popovich said.
In 6-8 weeks, we can re-evaluate him. Hopefully we’ll start practicing him and can get him back (on the court).‘’
There are only a little more than nine weeks remaining, which means that any slip in the timetable could mean that fans have seen Elliott in action for the last time this season.
As far as his recovery, whether it's April, July or August,'' Popovich said,
we expect him to be back to the Sean Elliott that we all know.‘’
Popovich pointed out that Danny Manning of the Phoenix Suns and Tim Hardaway of the Miami Heat underwent knee-ligament
reconstructions and have since returned to play at a high level.
Manning and Hardaway had much worse injuries, and they were able to overcome them,'' Popovich said.
All players are different, and it may take some time, but we’re confident that Sean will be able to come back from this.‘’
Though Elliott has averaged 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists this season, fans have groused about his production falling off from a year ago. If anything, Popovich said, Elliott’s ability to keep his production as high as it has been during a time of physical stress should send a message to fans who have called him soft.
It should, if people are being objective about it,'' Popovich said.
If they say he’s not a good rebounder, then that’s fair. But to say he never stuck his nose in there and played any D (defense), that’s unfair. Sean’s been in a lot of pain this year. Lately, he seemed stiffer and less able to explode.‘’
