3 takeaways as Spurs snap skid against Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For the first six minutes of the Spurs’ listless start Tuesday in Memphis, rookie forward Sidy Cissoko watched from the bench and bided his time.

The youngest player on the roster, Cissoko does not have an overabundance of NBA experience. He knew enough to realize what he needed to do if coach Gregg Popovich deigned to put him in the game.

“Coach Pop always says to show a good first impression,” Cissoko said. “Bring the energy or you’re going to stay on the bench.”

Cissoko got an early call in the middle of the first quarter at FedEx Forum and helped jolt the theretofore lifeless Spurs to a 102-87 victory over a comically undermanned Grizzlies team.

Cissoko led the Spurs with four points after a dreadful first quarter that saw them fall behind by as many as 14 points against a Memphis squad that had a whopping 13 players listed as out with injury.

He finished with 10 points, a season best. More than that, Cissoko seemed to give the Spurs a spark they had been lacking at the start.

Victor Wembanyama had 18 points and seven blocks, Julian Champagnie threw in 17 points and Sandro Mamukelashvili turned in an 11-point, 16-rebound double-double.

“I thought they decided they wanted to do well and win the game,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of his team. “Once they decided that at halftime, they went out and they did it.”

The result improved the Spurs to 20-59, meaning they will not finish the season with the absolute worst record in club history. The 1996-97 club, holder of that ignominious record, was 20-62.

With at least one victory over their final three games — and the Spurs end the season at home against a Detroit team with the worst record in the league — they can surpass the 96-97 squad outright.

This wasn’t a goal at the start of the season, when the Spurs added Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall draft pick.

It became an admirable aim after the Spurs went into the All-Star break in February at 11-44.

Wembanyama was asked if getting to 20 victories meant something to him, given where the team sat a few months ago.

“Yeah, it does,” he said. “Every game has been hard. Every game we’ve competed and tried to win every single one of them. But those last ones matter even more.”

For the Spurs, Tuesday’s win snapped a 13-game losing streak against Memphis dating to Dec. 23, 2020.

It came against a Grizzlies squad whose injured list had the length of a CVS receipt.

Brandon Clarke made his first start of the season, becoming the 23rd different player to start for Memphis this season. It was the Grizzlies’ 50th unique starting lineup.

When reserve forward Jack White entered the game in the first half, he became the 33rd player to log minutes for Memphis, setting an NBA single-season record. White was signed to a 10-day contract earlier in the day under a hardship exemption.

The highest-scoring player available for Memphis on Tuesday was G.G. Jackson, who came in averaging 13.4 points.

And yet, the Spurs trailed by double digits after the first quarter.”

“I think after the first time out we were completely flat,” Champagnie said. “We had no energy.”

Enter Cissoko, who gave the Spurs just enough spark to avoid disaster.

Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s victory, the Spurs’ sixth in the past 12 games:

1. In a way, 20 wins shows progress

There were no champagne bottles popped in the FedEx Forum locker room after the Spurs secured their 20th victory.

Perhaps that will come when they pocket victory No. 21. It would really be something if the Spurs win out the rest of the week and get to No. 22, which would surpass last season’s mark.

Still, players acknowledged getting their win total out of the teens meant something. If for no other reason, it shows they’ve been playing the right way lately.

“Truly, after All-Star our goal wasn’t (number of) wins,” Champagnie said. “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh we have to get as many wins as we can to make it look good, because 20-59 still does not look good. Our goal was just to become better as a unit.”

Regardless of what happens over the final three games — Wednesday at Oklahoma City, Friday at home against Denver and Sunday at home against the Pistons — the Spurs can at least say they accomplished that.

2. Cissoko keeps his promise

Fellow Spurs gave Cissoko a hard time when he passed up an open layup at Denver earlier this month.

Cissoko’s retort?

“He said, ‘All right, when I get another one I’m going to dunk everything,’ ” Champagnie said.

Cissoko was true to his word Tuesday. He went 4 of 6 against the Grizzlies, with all four of his baskets coming on slams.

He was also active with a pair of offensive rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal. Cissoko played 21 minutes, equaling his playing time from his previous four appearances — two of which date to December.

A second-round pick last summer, the other half of a Spurs draft class highlighted by Wembanyama, Cissoko has spent the bulk of his rookie season in the G League.

At 6-foot-7, with a long wing span and plus-athleticism, the Spurs don’t have to squint hard to see his eventual fit on the roster.

“He’s bringing something new on the court,” Wembanyama said. “The energy he has, the things he does. He does all the things we can ask for from a guy who doesn’t get a lot of minutes.”

3. Mamu keeps doing good things

As injuries have piled up on the Spurs, Mamukelashvili continues to play a prominent role in the rotation. The 24-year-old Georgian earned a start Tuesday, his second in three games.

Mamukelashvili was all over the place against the Grizzlies, posting his third double-double of the season and setting a career high for rebounds.

He has become something of a favorite of Popovich, who has played him at least 20 minutes in five consecutive games.

“He’s like a perpetual motion kind of thing,” Popovich said. “He’s moving all the time, with or without the ball. Sometimes I think he doesn’t know exactly why, but I love his movement and his IQ. He knows how to play.”

Mamukelashvili is set to become a free agent at season’s end. It remains to be seen whether his productive final push will be enough to earn him a spot on next season’s roster.

For now, just enjoy the Mamu show while it lasts.
