2003-present
The instant “Big Shot Rob” nailed the 3-point shot that beat the Detroit Pistons in pivotal Game 5 of the 2005 NBA Finals, he cemented a spot in Spurs history. The game-winner ranks among the greatest clutch shots in Spurs and NBA history. The Spurs went on to win that series in seven games, giving Horry his sixth NBA championship — he won three with the Lakers and two with the Rockets. His numbers for the Spurs are not imposing, but since joining them, he has been the team’s most reliable big man off the bench and one of the team’s prime playoff performers. In just three seasons, Horry already ranks fifth in playoff 3-pointers made (52), ninth in playoff blocks (31) and 10th in playoff rebounds (236).

Thirty years ago, in 1976, the Spurs played their first season in the NBA after being absorbed into the older league along with three other teams from the American Basketball Association. To commemorate the milestone, the Express-News each Sunday will recognize our selections as the 30 greatest NBA Spurs. Here is No. 8:
Larry Kenon, 1975-80: Another player who helped the Spurs make a smooth transition from the ABA to the NBA, Kenon was the left hook to George Gervin’s right cross in the Spurs’ 1-2 scoring punch during their first four NBA seasons.
Though he never led the Spurs in scoring — always No.2 behind Gervin — and does not appear in the club’s all-time top 10 in games played, he ranks sixth all-time in points scored (6,733). He averaged 21.2 points per game in the four NBA seasons with the Spurs.
He is one of five players in Spurs history to score more than 50 points in a game, with 51 against the Pistons on March 30, 1980, one of the last games he would play for the Spurs.
The 6-fooot-9 forward known as “Special K” also was a workhorse rebounder. He ranks fifth on the Spurs’ all-time rebound list (3,217), and led the team in rebounding each of the four NBA seasons he played in San Antonio. He averaged 11.3 rebounds in 1976-77, which ranked 10th in the league.
A two-time NBA All-Star, he was a key performer in the Spurs’ run to the Eastern Conference finals in 1979, averaging 21.1 points.
Kenon departed San Antonio after the 1979-80 season, signing as a free agent with the Bulls.

Here is No. 6:
Tony Parker, 2001-present: When the Spurs made Parker the 28th selection in the first round of the 2001 draft, few could have predicted the impact a 19-year-old from France would have over the next six seasons. But Parker, whose father had played at Loyola of Chicago and in Europe, became a starter just five games into his Spurs career. The first European guard to be named to the All-Rookie first team, Parker showed off both his quickness and toughness that season.
By the end of Parker’s second season, he had earned his first championship ring as a starter and recorded the highest scoring average by a Spurs point guard (15.5 points per game) since James Silas averaged 17.7 in 1979-80.
Still just 24 years old, Parker has remained on a steep learning curve, his ability to penetrate and score at the rim improving each season. He shot 48.2 percent from the field in the Spurs’ championship run in 2005. When his perimeter shooting began to improve in 2005-06, the result was a career-best scoring average of 18.0, a career-best shooting percentage of 54.8 and his first appearance in the All-Star Game.
This season, Parker is averaging 18.8 points and went to his second-straight All-Star Game.
In his five-plus seasons, Parker has risen to No. 3 on the Spurs’ all-time assists list, passing David Robinson last week, with 2,442. He also has moved into No. 6 on the all-time scoring list, with 6,980 points as of Saturday.
Already having played 80 playoff games in his five seasons, Parker ranks fourth on the Spurs’ all-time postseason list in points (1,361), third in assists (345), fourth in free throws (539), fourth in 3-pointers (53) and fifth in steals (74).
Here is No. 5:
Sean Elliott, 1989-2001: For Spurs fans, Elliott’s “Memorial Day Miracle” will forever rank near the top of the franchise’s greatest plays. Tip-toeing along the sideline at the Alamodome in the waning seconds of Game 2 of the Western Conference finals against Portland, Elliott managed to stay inbounds and launch a perfect 3-point shot that gave the Spurs a dramatic, 86-85 victory.
Not long after the Spurs won their first title that season, Elliott announced he had been suffering for several years from a rare kidney disorder, focal glomerulosclerosis, that required a transplant. After receiving a kidney from his brother, Noel, in August 1999, Elliott became the first pro athlete to return to action after an organ transplant when he played for the Spurs on March 14, 2000. He played 18 more games that season and 52 in 2000-01. He retired after the 2000-01 season.
One of only five Spurs players whose number has been retired, Elliott spent 11 of his 12 seasons with the team. The third pick in the 1989 draft after a standout career at Arizona, Elliott improved his scoring average each of his first four seasons, averaging 17.2 points in 1993-94. But he was traded to the Pistons after that season for Dennis Rodman. His absence was noted immediately, and when Gregg Popovich was named general manager in 1994, he had instructions from majority owner Peter Holt: Get Elliott back. On July 19, 1994, Popovich did just that.
On the Spurs’ all-time lists, Elliott ranks first in 3-point field goals made (563) and attempted (1,485); fourth in games played (669); fourth in points scored (9,659); sixth in rebounds (2,941).
Here is No. 4:
Manu Ginobili, 2002-present: Were our ranking of all-time Spurs based on competitiveness alone, Ginobili would be a strong candidate for No. 1. Few players in NBA history have been more intensely driven than the 6-foot-6 guard from Bahia Blanca, Argentina.
Selected in the second round of the 1999 draft, Ginobili honed his skills in the Italian professional league before signing with the Spurs on July 18, 2002, twice named MVP of that league. He tweaked the ankle twice during his rookie season but still managed to earn second-team All-Rookie honors. More significantly, he appeared in all 24 playoff games as the Spurs secured their second NBA title. He averaged 27.5 minutes in that playoff run, and 9.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and a team-high 1.71 steals, all improvements from his regular-season marks. It was a hint that Ginobili would prove capable of elevating his play when the games mattered most.
Ginobili led Argentina to the 2004 Olympic gold medal, averaging 19.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.39 steals in eight games. He followed with his first NBA All-Star appearance and then had a remarkable playoff run as the Spurs claimed another championship.
He was the team’s top scorer in the first round, shot 57.6 percent and averaged 20.5 points in the second round, and was the team’s top scorer in three of seven games against Detroit in the Finals.
Here is No. 3:
George Gervin, 1974-85: When the Spurs entered the NBA in 1976, George Gervin and guard James Silas were the team’s undisputed stars, but Gervin gave the team its identity through its first 10 seasons in the league. Known throughout the basketball world, then and now, as “Ice,” Gervin led the league in scoring four times, including three consecutive seasons, in 1977-78 (27.2 points per game), 1978-79 (29.6) and 1979-80 (33.1). After finishing second in 1980-81, he regained the scoring title in 1981-82 (32.1).
A unique player with a unique style, Gervin created his own shot in almost any circumstance. Rail-thin, he could run forever without losing a step. His scoring moves were creative and legendary. He was the master of the finger roll, his signature shot.
Gervin appeared in nine NBA All-Star Games and was named MVP of the 1980 game. He still holds the NBA record for points in one quarter (33), scored in the second quarter of the 1977-78 regular-season finale against the New Orleans Jazz, when his 63 points moved him past Denver’s David Thompson for that season’s scoring title.
Gervin was inducted in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996, the only Spur in the Hall. The club retired his No. 44 on March 20, 1998.
Clearly, “Ice” could do a lot more than finger roll.
Here is No. 2:
David Robinson, 1989-2003: Robinson was such a great prospect that when the Spurs drafted him in 1987 out of the U.S. Naval Academy, they were willing to wait for him to complete a tour of duty in the Navy before he was able to join the team in 1989.
The wait was worth it, because when Robinson retired in 2003 after 14 seasons, he was the Spurs’ all-time leader in games played (987), points (20,790), rebounds (10,497) and blocked shots (2,954).
The 1992 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1995, “The Admiral” is one of only 10 players in league history named to 10 All-NBA teams and the only male player to represent the United States in three Olympics.
The left-handed Robinson was the NBA’s scoring leader in 1994, its top rebounder in 1991 and its leader in blocked shots in 1992.
The anchor of the team’s stifling defense that produced the franchise’s first NBA title in 1999, Robinson also is the team’s all-time leader in playoff games played (123) and ranks second in playoff points (2,221), rebounds (1,301), field goals made (768) and attempted (1,604), free throws made (684) and attempted (966) and blocks (312).
Robinson is one of only five NBA players to score more than 70 points in a game, his 71 against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 24, 1994 is the Spurs’ single-game best by eight points.
Robinson’s final game was memorable.
Less than two months shy of his 38th birthday, he had his best game of the Spurs’ 2003 playoff run in title-clinching Game 6 of the NBA Finals, grabbing 17 rebounds and scoring 13 points in front of an adoring home crowd at the SBC Center.
“My last game, streamers flying, world champions,” Robinson said afterwards.
“How could you write a better script than this, man?”
Now part of the Spurs’ ownership group, Robinson remains a community treasure in the Alamo City, active in civic organizations and good works.

Thirty years ago the Spurs played their first NBA season after being one of four teams from the American Basketball Association to join the older league. To commemorate this anniversary, on Sundays the Express-News has recognized our selections as the 30 greatest NBA Spurs. Tim Duncan, 1997-present, is No. 1.
When the Express-News decided to commemorate the Spurs’ 30 years as an NBA franchise by compiling a list of the 30 greatest players from the team’s NBA years, there was one given: Nos. 1 through 3 would be Tim Duncan, David Robinson and George Gervin.
Gervin embodied the team’s success as the franchise transitioned from the ABA into the NBA. He was the team’s first superstar.
Robinson was the face of the franchise for 14 seasons, the team’s first NBA Most Valuable Player and the anchor of the lock-down defense that became the team’s hallmark after the go-go approach that carried over from the ABA into the first seasons in the NBA.
Duncan in 1997 picked up the mantle from Robinson, leading the team to three championships while being recognized as the best big man in the game, a two-time MVP and three-time MVP of the NBA Finals.
Each player had his place in the team’s impact on San Antonio. Without question, they are the three most important players in franchise history.
There was consensus among those of us who compiled the top 30 list about placing them in one-two-three order, too. While some readers already have expressed disappointment that Duncan was placed ahead of Robinson, recognizing Duncan as the greatest player in franchise history was a matter of minimal debate.
Start with raw numbers.
Still 18 days shy of his 31st birthday, Duncan already ranks second in Spurs NBA history in games played (741, before Saturday’s Spurs-Warriors game), rebounds (8,816) and blocked shots (1,825). He’s third in points scored (16,191), field goals made (6,194) and attempted (12,195), free throws made (3,779) and attempted (5,551). He’s fifth in assists (2,346), seventh in steals (591) and ninth in field goal percentage (50.8).
Duncan was named the NBA’s MVP in 2002 and 2003, one of 10 players in league history to win multiple MVP awards. In the nine seasons he has played before 2006-07, he has been first-team All-NBA eight times and was a second-team selection the only season he was not voted to the first team. He has earned All-Defensive first-team honors six times and All-Defensive second team three times. He is the first player in league history to be named to an All-NBA team and an All-Defensive team in each of his first nine seasons. Duncan, the 1998 Rookie of the Year, has been an All-Star each of his 10 NBA seasons.
What truly made the choice of Duncan as the No. 1 player in franchise history easy, though, is the impact he made on the Spurs’ playoff success. Before he arrived, the Spurs had won more than one NBA playoff series only once.
With Duncan, the Spurs have won three titles, and with three distinctly different sets of teammates surrounding him. In the club’s first championship season, Duncan was with a mostly veteran outfit that included Robinson, Sean Elliott and Avery Johnson. In the second championship run, in 2003, Tony Parker was in his second season and still learning how to be an effective NBA point guard, Manu Ginobili was a rookie and Stephen Jackson was a major offensive contributor. In 2005, Duncan played alongside a new center, Rasho Nesterovic, and Robert Horry and Brent Barry had filled important roles.
Duncan was the constant, voted MVP of all three NBA Finals.
It may well be that the Spurs remained in San Antonio because of Duncan. A referendum to commit public funds to construction of a new arena, deemed vital by ownership if the team was to remain in the Alamo City, trailed in pre-election polls before Duncan led the Spurs to the 1999 title. Voting on the same day the Spurs were presented their championship rings, San Antonians overwhelmingly approved public support for what is now the AT&T Center.
Here are Duncan’s rankings in the Spurs playoff history: No. 1 in points scored (2,858), rebounds (1,499), field goals made (1,038) and attempted (2,056), free throws made (759) and attempted (1,078) and blocked shots (318). He’s No. 2 in games played (118), assists (424), scoring average (24.1) and rebounding average (12.7); No. 4 in steals (80); No. 9 in field goal percentage (50.5).
Duncan’s importance to the Spurs’ success on the court goes beyond numbers. He is a leader by example; few players in NBA history have been more devoted to self-improvement. His work ethic has been praised by coach Gregg Popovich from the moment he arrived for his rookie season.
Barry recalls the day he arrived in San Antonio to sign a free-agent contract on July 15, 2004. The Spurs had been eliminated by the Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals in late May, but as Barry signed his contract in an office just off the Spurs’ practice court, he heard the squeak of basketball shoes on hardwood, so he looked to see who was working out.

The ultra-competitive Jackson, a 6-foot-8 shooting guard, averaged 12.8 points in 24 playoff games during that title run. It was his willingness to take — and make — big shots in big games that most endeared him to Spurs fans and coaches alike. During the 2002-03 season, he averaged 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds.

He made an immediate impact after the Spurs made him their No. 1 draft pick in 1988, leading the team in scoring during his rookie season, 1988-89, with an average of 18.6 points per game. He also led the Spurs in scoring in 10 playoff games that season, averaging 20.5 points. The 6-foot-7 shooting guard from the University of Georgia ranks 10th on the Spurs’ list of NBA games played.

A 6-foot-11 center from DePaul, Corzine led the Spurs in rebounding in the two seasons he played for the club before he was included in a trade that brought Artis Gilmore to San Antonio. On teams built around George Gervin’s scoring, Corzine averaged 10.5 points and 7.8 rebounds in 1980-81 and 10.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in 1981-82, starting all 82 games both seasons. He elevated his performance in the postseason, too, especially in the 1982 playoffs, when he averaged 13.6 points and 9.4 rebounds as the Spurs advanced to the Western Conference semifinals.

1976-1983
Dietrick was one of the players who helped the Spurs make the transition from the ABA to the NBA. After playing the final three ABA seasons with the Spurs, he played all 82 games in the first NBA season. He also was a solid contributor on the 1977-78 team that came within one game of making it to the NBA Finals. A 6-foot-11 center, he averaged 4.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in the infamous “Fat Lady” series with Washington. Popular in the community, Dietrick was the color commentator on Spurs broadcasts for a number of years after his playing career ended.

“The Rifleman” was a key contributor off the bench on the Spurs’ back-to-back division champions in 1995 and 1996, including the 1994-95 team that established a club record for victories (since eclipsed) with 62. One of the most feared 3-point shooters in league history, Person led the team in 3-pointers made in both those seasons, hitting 172 in 1994-95, 190 in 1995-96. He made the 1,000th 3-pointer of his career in a March 14, 1996 game against the Heat. He also was part of a trade in 1999 that brought Steve Kerr, higher on our list of Top 30 NBA Spurs.

With James Silas battling injuries when the Spurs entered the NBA in 1976, Gale assumed a key role as an outstanding point guard and led the club in assists in its first three NBA seasons and was eighth in the league, at 5.8 per game, in 1976-77. An outstanding defender and free-throw shooter, he also led the club in steals for three seasons. He was fourth in the league in 1977-78, with 2.27 per game. He ranks sixth on the all-time Spurs steals list (680) and 10th on the all-time assists list (1,634). He is fifth on the all-time free throw percentage list (82.7 percent).

The Spurs picked Banks in the second round of the 1981 draft after his standout career at Duke, and he moved immediately into the team’s regular playing rotation, averaging 9.7 points as a rookie. He assumed an even greater role in his second season, averaging 14.9 points on a solid team that went to the Western Conference finals a second-straight season. He averaged 15.9 points in 11 playoff games in that run to the conference finals and averaged 6.9 rebounds, as well.

Although Elie didn’t come to the Spurs until he was 35, and after eight NBA seasons, what he brought with him played a vital role in the team’s first NBA title run: NBA Finals experience and a toughness under pressure that can’t be taught. Elie averaged 9.7 points in his first season with the Spurs, the lockout-shortened 1999 season that culminated in the first championship in club history. He was a key contributor during the playoff run, too, hitting some big 3-point shots on the way to the title. His leadership skills were such that he moved to the Spurs’ bench as an assistant coach when his playing career ended.

No. 22: Vinny Del Negro
1992-98
The Spurs signed Del Negro as a free agent in 1992, and he was an integral part of teams that won two Midwest Division titles, including the 62-20 team that advanced to the 1995 Western Conference finals. He averaged 11.2 points in his 433 regular- season games, 9.5 points in 46 playoff games. Del Negro left the Spurs after the 1997-98 season and joined the Bucks. He later played for the Suns and Warriors. Del Negro ranks 10th all-time on the Spurs’ list of 3-pointers made (205) and fourth in free-throw percentage (82.8). He is now Director of Player Personnel for the Suns.

No. 21: Steve Kerr
1998-01 and 2002-03
Though Kerr played only four seasons with the Spurs, he earned championship rings in both 1999 and 2003 and made significant contributions in both title runs. If he did nothing else in his four seasons, he would always be remembered for shooting the Spurs back from the brink of defeat in Game 6 of the 2003 Western Conference finals in Dallas. He also was one of the team’s most valuable players in the locker room, a veteran leader whose experience in his championship runs with the Bulls helped the Spurs navigate their first Finals. He is now an analyst for TNT’s NBA telecasts.

He was one of the ABA Spurs who made the transition into the NBA 30 years ago. Olberding was a solid contributor who averaged 10.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in six NBA seasons with the Spurs. He was even better as a playoff performer for the Spurs, averaging 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in 41 games over his six seasons. He still ranks seventh on the Spurs’ playoff rebounding list (286), ninth in both playoff shots attempted (486) and made (230) and 10th in playoff assists (139).

The instant “Big Shot Rob” nailed the 3-point shot that beat the Detroit Pistons in pivotal Game 5 of the 2005 NBA Finals, he cemented a spot in Spurs history. The game-winner ranks among the greatest clutch shots in Spurs and NBA history. The Spurs went on to win that series in seven games, giving Horry his sixth NBA championship — he won three with the Lakers and two with the Rockets. His numbers for the Spurs are not imposing, but since joining them, he has been the team’s most reliable big man off the bench and one of the team’s prime playoff performers. In just three seasons, Horry already ranks fifth in playoff 3-pointers made (52), ninth in playoff blocks (31) and 10th in playoff rebounds (236).
No. 19: Robert Horry
2003-present

The greatest rebounder in team history, his average of 17.3 rebounds in the 1993-94 season remains the Spurs’ all-time best, topping the 16.8 he averaged in 1994-95. To better appreciate those seasons, consider that next-best on the list is David Robinson’s 13.0 in 1990-91. Rodman has nine of the top 10 single game rebounding marks, including a 32-rebound game that stands as No. 1. He had 10 games of 25 or more rebounds among the 118 he played in silver and black. That the Spurs traded him after two seasons had to do with his occasionally bizarre behavior, nothing to do with his effort or performance.
