(所有统计数据均由 stathead.com 提供。)

The numbers behind Victor Wembanyama’s remarkable rookie season
[Image] Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama (center) twirls the ball as he along with Devin Vassell (from right) and Jeremy Sochan get ready to pose for photos during Spurs Media Day on Monday, Oct. 2, 2023.
Not for a single moment, not even amid a franchise-record losing streak that spanned 39 days, did young Victor Wembanyama buckle under the mountainous weight of extraordinary hype and grand expectations.
The scouting reports that sounded hyperbolic before his stateside debut somehow undersold how unprecedented the Spurs’ 7-foot-3 rookie truly is. Some of Wembanyama’s season statistics had never been see before, while others put him in the rarest of company among both rookies and veterans.
“I feel like even the sky’s not a limit,” Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili said. “He’s an alien.”
Here are five sets of statistics that show how Wembanyama authored one of the greatest first-year campaigns in NBA history. (All statistics courtesy of stathead.com.)
- Earning his place among the greats.
Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-best 3.6 blocks per game. He joined David Robinson (1989-90), Shaquille O’Neal (1992-93) and Alonzo Mourning (1992-93) as the only rookies to average at least 20, 10 and three, and the 20-year-old was the only one to do it while playing fewer than 30 minutes (29.7 per game).
Add in Wembanyama’s other traditional statistics – 3.9 assists, 1.8 3-pointers and 1.2 steals – and his season becomes a remarkable outlier. No player in league history, rookie or otherwise, had averaged 20 points, 10 boards, three assists, three blocks, one steal and one 3 per game before.
Even if you remove those 3s from the equation, Wembanyama is one of six players to average 20-10-3-3-1. The others are all in the Hall of Fame: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (seven times), Robinson (three), Hakeem Olajuwon (three), Patrick Ewing (once) and Bob Lanier (once).
- Wemby showcased unparalleled versatility.
Wembanyama amassed 254 blocks, 128 3-pointers and 88 steals. Six different players had combined for 21 seasons with at least 250 blocks and 80 steals in a before Wemby, with Marcus Camby the last to do so in 2007-08.
Those six players hit a combined 40 3-pointers across those 21 campaigns. Wembanyama connected on 128 triples in just 71 games. He’s the only player in league history to finish with at least 250, 100 and 80 in each category.
Former Maverick Raef LaFrentz produced the only other season with even 200 blocks, 100 3s and 50 steals, finishing with 213, 104 and 55, respectively, in 2001-02.
- He was a stocks monster.
Wembanyama led the league in total blocks (254) and was tied for 21st in total steals (88). He finished with a gigantic edge in stocks (steals plus blocks), outpacing Lakers star Anthony Davis (269) stocks by 73 in that combined category.
With 342 stocks, Wemby became the first player to reach 300 since Davis had 308 in 2017-18. The Spurs’ No. 1 overall pick trailed only Robinson (457 stocks), Manute Bol (425) and O’Neal (346) for most combined steals and blocks by a rookie.
- Point Wemby is a rare playmaker.
Wembanyama became just the third rookie listed at 7-foot or taller to average at least three assists per game. His 3.9 average ranked slightly behind Abdul-Jabbar’s 4.1 per game in 1969-70 and just ahead of Brad Daugherty’s 3.8 per game in 1986-87.
Wemby assisted on a total of 274 field goals for the Spurs, in the process becoming the first rookie and fourth player in league history to reach at least 1,500 points (1,522), 250 blocks (254) and 250 assists in a season. The others should be familiar by now: Abdul-Jabbar, Olajuwon, Robinson.
- He nearly out-blocked an entire team.
Wembanyama averaged more blocks per game (3.6) than the Miami Heat (3.4). Despite missing 11 contests, Wembanyama finished with 254 rejections this season. Miami’s entire team blocked a collective 280 in 82 games.
Wembanyama also became the second rookie to lead the league in blocks since the NBA began keeping official records in 1973-74 and first since Bol averaged 5.0 per game in 1985-86. Overall, Wembanyama’s blocks average ranks behind only Bol (5.0 BPG) and Robinson (3.9) for highest by a rookie.
