As one of just five players to ever win an NBA title, Defensive Player of the Year and MVP, Kevin Garnett does not impress easily. So it’s not small thing that Victor Wembanyama has left the Hall of Famer awestruck.

On his “KG Certified” podcast with former Celtics teammate Paul Pierce, a gushing Garnett said Wembanyama should win Defensive Player of the Year “hands down.”

“It ain’t even a choice,” Garnett said of the 20-year-old Spurs center who’s vying to become the first rookie to win the award. “And I hope the league don't screw him.

“All this, 'Oh, he plays on a bad team,' (but) you still gotta show up and clock in. Wemby has took expectations and shot it to the moon, man. Everything we expected him to do, he was a lot and then some. The (stuff) he’s doing in the post, man, get outta here, man."

That Wembanyama even has a legitimate case despite the Spurs finishing with the league’s fifth-worst record is a testament to his impact on that side of the ball.

The Spurs had defensive rating of 111.2 with the NBA’s leading shot blocker on the floor, which would have ranked as the fourth-best mark over the course of the regular season. That rating shot up to 117.3 with Wembanyama off the court, which would have ranked 23rd.
