Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama's history-making rookie season came to an end Saturday with the team announcing he would miss the season finale due to right ankle injury management.

The Spurs (21-60) host Detroit (14-67) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Frost Bank Center.

Wembanyama, 20, finished his maiden voyage through the NBA averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, an NBA-best 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals to become the first player to average those numbers or better for a season since the NBA and the ABA merged in summer 1976. And he did it while averaging just 29.7 minutes per outing over 71 games.

Popovich said before Friday’s stunning 121-120 upset of Denver in which Wembanyama finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal, that it was uncertain whether the French phenom would be available against the Pistons.

Wembanyama sat out the second night of a back-to-back last week at Oklahoma City, and the team is approaching Sunday’s game, with its early tipoff as a de facto back-to-back as well.

Popovich indicated Wembanyama’s minutes Friday would factor into the calculus of whether he is active Sunday. Wembanyama played 37 against Denver.

“It’s a lot of minutes,” Popovich said afterward.

Popovich said he expected some blowback should he decide to sideline Wembanyama for the final game.

“Knowing Victor, he’ll probably have me in a headlock,” Popovich said.

Wembanyama said after Friday’s game he would prefer to play and planned to lobby Popovich as such.

“I know this has been in the air,” Wembanyama said. “I mean, I felt it's been in the air for some weeks, but I'm always going to fight to play.”

Asked if Wembanyama stood a chance of winning that argument, Popovich offered a glint of hope.

“Manu (Ginobili) won it once in a while,” Popovich noted.

Wembanyama, the all but certain rookie of the year after the Spurs selected him No. 1 overall last June following their draft lottery win, is the first rookie in NBA history with 1,500 points, 250 assists and 250 blocks. 

Only three other players - all Hall of Famers - ever reached those numbers at any point in their careers: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Spurs great David Robinson.

Wembanyama is also just the 10th player in NBA history to average 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a season. The others are Abdul-Jabbar ,Olajuwon, Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Elvin Hayes, Bob Lanier, Bob McAdoo, Alonzo Mourning and Shaquille O'Neal.

Wembanyama is the only player to do it while averaging less than 30 minutes per game.
